"My last morning on Coruscant, time to depart for Corulag. Outside, the sky is a brilliant red and orange. But I’m bored with a picture of a pretty sunrise, or even sunsets, for that matter, I find them cliched, hokey, predictable. Anyone could like a sunset. And I’m not anyone, I’m Fajra Merav." Her eyes were cast downward as she spoke, reading from what appeared to be a diary of sorts. When words no longer fell from her lips, she closed the book and lifted her gaze.

"On my last morning on Corulag, the sky was a brilliant red and orange. But what was different about that sunrise than any other? What’s different is…that no matter how hard I try to forget…" A broken smile touched her lips, but it didn’t reach her eyes. Those eyes. There was so much there…so much pain. "…I will always remember that pretty little sunrise. A miracle appreciated when faced to wait in the darkness. It was in that darkness of night that I embraced death. I could feel her…she was so close. I knew it, because I was once in her embrace." Realization flashed in her eyes, as a memory rendered her speechless. You’ve been kissed by shadows. You’ve crossed into Death, into the other side, and returned. Do you think something like that doesn’t leave a mark on the soul?.

When she found her voice again, all warmth had fled. "My brothers are dead. Men, women, and children…breath forfeit for no cause. My tied limbs were staked into the world below, soaking it with the incarnadine tears of my blood. All night they took their turns, but that wasn’t enough, they let me live. Now I’m left with no choice. Blood demands blood."

(Highly Classified Transmission)

Commander Merav,

It will do no favors for the morale of your men for them to see such strange ramblings from their commander broadcast in an open transmission. I have ordered your transmission classified at once, so that it does not cause alarm if it is disseminated to the general public. With this first order of business concluded, I am now compelled to ask—are you mad, Commander? I am not able to discern a word of what it is you're asking in this incoherent message. Are you requesting additional troops? Weapons? Supplies? If so, submit your request to Procurement through the regular channels, Commander. If you are requesting a different assignment, or time off, submit your request to Personnel.

I read the unfortunate report of what happened to you on Corulag, and it is my hope that it has not emotionally compromised your ability to command the 13th Legion. Your transmission, however, does not encourage me. I have informed your executive officer that I am dispatching a doctor from COMPNOR to conduct a psychiatric evaluation of you and to interview your troops. Assuming you cooperate with this, Commander, and assuming what I hope to be true (that you are still fit for command) this ugly business will conclude and we may speak of it no more. Provided, that is, that strange transmissions of this sort do not occur again.

My advice to you Admiral. Read a book. My message is art. Poetic if you must give it a name. And my request? Blood demands blood. I'm requesting action. You dare question my sanity? Imperial citizens were murdered without cause, and our enemies just walk away? The fact that nothing has been done is insane. You should be ashamed.

Merav

Commander Merav,

I did not ask your advice. You are not an artist, you are first and foremost a Commander in His Majesty's armed forces. Your job is not to write poems, it is to do what you're told to do. Yes, Commander, I do dare to question your sanity. In fact, I no longer feel a psychiatric evaluation is necessary—you are clearly suffering some sort of post-traumatic hysteria, and you are incapable of command at this time. I have, again, contacted your executive officer and informed him that you have been emotionally compromised, temporarily relieved of command of the 13th Legion, and ordered to report to Vjun at once. Dr. Cratwright will evaluate your condition at the mental institution there. Your rank cylinders have been disabled for the time being, and a shuttle will collect you (under guard if necessary) at 0950 today. In your absence, the 13th Legion will continue the Algarian campaign.

Perhaps I was more gracious in my last transmission to you than I should have been, so I will be blunt: do not make this difficult, Commander. Unless you want all of those who doubt that women are capable of command to be proven right, I suggest you admit that you have a problem and cooperate with Dr. Cratwright's evaluation. Thus, you can be well and resume command of the 13th Legion as soon as possible, and there is no need for your father to be ashamed of you. He is a good man and a good soldier, and would not approve of this sort of strange behavior. You are warned, Commander. Today you lose your command, but if this insubordination continues, tomorrow you will lose your rank.

Apologies Admiral. I spoke brashly, a flaw I have not forgotten. Corulag is not something anyone could walk away from unmarked. As for the morale of the men, it would not be wise to leave the battlefield. I will relieve command to Captain Jai'galaar and await evaluation at the Imperial Forward Command Center.

Apology accepted, Commander, and I suppose I behaved a bit inflexibly under the circumstances. My only concern is for your well-being, and for the well-being of the troops under your command. Your service record is exemplary, and there is no reason to doubt your ability to command these troops under ordinary circumstances. But as you said, you have been through a traumatic ordeal; considering this, a psychiatric assessment would be expected anyway. But you will not be pulled from the field—I will arrange instead a field assessment at your nearest FOB, as originally planned. This will not inconvenience you for long, as I expect that you'll be cleared for duty in no time. But we simply must be sure that you're not emotionally compromised.

In the meantime, I will check on the progress of the investigation into the Corulag incident. If there are any promising leads, I'll see to it sufficient personnel are assigned to follow up on them. If there are no promising leads, I will find out why not. Be well, Commander.
