*A letter was personally delviered to Fitzgerald's office by an aide of Terrawin's. It was marked as diplomatic mail for the eyes of the Senator only. Inside the envelope was two pieces of paper. The first read.*

*The second was folded inside the invite, and was on a rapidly degrading notepaper which would begin to decay in contact the moisture of the air in the room and from Fitzgerald's hands. Within half an hour it would be a crumbled pile of dust*

Dear Mr Fitzgerald.

Allow me to introduce myself, I am Verence Terrawin, Senator of Alsakan. I am pleased to address another "novus homo" of the Senate. I must apologise for the cloak and dagger nature of this attempt at contact, but it has been well noted that you are rather embattled at this stage and as such it might be considered inappropriate if a communication of this nature was to be read by other eyes and published. This letter will degrade over the next half hour to the point of being unreadable 30 minutes from the opening of this envelope.

By writing to you in such a candid fashion I am risking my position and standing, and realise you might take facsimiles of this communication etc to damn me. However, I am informed by my contacts that you are a man of honour, and so I am certain sure you will handle this communication honourably.

I look forward to proposing legislation co-sponsored by yourself in order to help restore the ancient rights and privelages of the Imperial Senate. I am curious if you have read the recent article by my associates at the Alsakan Free Press? Having seen the data from the "Alsakan Star" I firmly believe that there was some form of bombardment on Alurion.

I believe the Navy may close ranks around one of its own, but for me it is important to see that the goals of that dog Senator North are thwarted and that we avoid an escalation of Imperial power in the Raioballo Sector, disempowering local institutions and making the Senators from that region act under the influence of an Imperial Governor.

Senator Ray, as that overbred Oriel has remarked, has failed to condemn the Alurion Rebellion (amid rumours of war crimes against the rebels). Despite his other actions; the widespread negative opinion polls demonstrating a lack of support for the radical militarist agenda of some Senators on his world. It should perhaps be considered if Senator Ray is a potential political supporter, and if we could curry his support for devolution of power to the Senate then he might be useful in helping sway the balance of power against the centralizationists. I am unsure if he simply had knowledge of the incident at Alurion and believed pitch defiles or made his decision on a moral basis (or a combination of the two).

This is my current (rather candid) evalution of the Senate. I feel you might be interested to take a short look to help familiarise yourself to the landscape of the Senate.

Centralizationists
Senator Oriel
Senator Ordan
Senator North
Senator Veritas (Moderate)
Senator Oswaldt

Devolutionists
Senator Fitzgerald
Senator Terrawin
Senator Vanden (Occasionally imprudent but canny politician)
Senator Fowlkes (liability)
Senator Thanatos (liability)
Senator Zarcaine (liability)
Senator Cerra (Utter liability. Associated with the former Senator Star, socialite, substance abuser.)

Floating Senators (Mostly support Imperial Govt supported policies)
Senator Ray (Unknown quantity)
Senator Cambrist (Self interested fop, seemingly happy to be a quisling to Imperial policy)
Senator Toben Domon (Non-human, targeted by much speech but keeps the party line)
Senator Ryuun (Wants to secure investment in his world, self interested)
Senator Slaifon Youngblood (Easily influenced, essentially moralistic)
Senator Nasir (Strange Senator with a poor concept of basic, suspected religionist)

Thus those who are centralizationists (seek to channel power around the Imperial State) are in fact a minority in the Senate, and rely upon the support of a number of Senators who cannot be counted on ideologically but may be swayed by their own planetary interests or through fear of stepping out of line. With Senators Zarcaine and Fowlkes and debatably Thanatos openly criticising Imperial Military conduct on a general rather than specific basis is ultimately damaging to our ideology.

We do not wish our pro-Senate movement to become associated with any taint of Starism or Crionism, and should never cross the line to outright criticism of the Imperial state or military. While we might well criticise certain actions (as I intend to do on Alurion) questioning the institutions themselves is certain to marginalise us. It is another matter completely if we are able to draw to public attention a number of specific instances of misconduct, and the people themselves draw their own conclusions.

I would hasten to add these are just my personal opinions and should not be taken as anything more but a brainstorm of a Senator in his free time.

Yours Sincerely,

V.T.

Verence Terrawin

Senator of Alsakan
First Lord of the Foreign Office, Alsakan

*Fitzgerald treated the note with discretion. As Terrawin suspected he might, Fitzgerald did transcribe the contents of the note with his datapad, but simply for reference purposes, not to incriminate Terrawin who seemed, from this note, to be someone he could work with. Indeed, he found the Senator's analysis and his feelings on Crionism to be astute and similar to his own. Once the note had degraded and Fitzgerald had in his possession a secure copy, he placed the remains in a self-disposing ash tray that came standard in his and other offices. He would take no chances with this, but wouldn't respond to Terrawin in kind (even if he knew how). Instead, he'd accept the invitation to the Senator's social and make a point of pulling him aside confidentially to discuss this and other matters. Since that time, the two had established a working relationship and communicated with each other on strategy, pertaining, most recently, to the Monor II blockade.*

Eli Fitzgerald
Senator of Ralltiir (10 BBY—Present)

"I was elected to do some flamethrowing in the Senate. To a light a fire under those Senators and make it hot for them."
