From Catus Gravis, Senator of Campania Major

To Julius Aquilinus Aurelius, Citizen of Deralia

Sir,

Is not the greatest title a man can aspire to the citizenship of a free state? Indeed in the atmosphere of freedom a man has the peace of knowing that he is truly beholden to no man for his safety, rather to the Republic he lives in.

The monarchy and council of lords is not only an unaccountable and expensive institution, unrepresentative of modern Deralia, it also gives politicians almost limitless power. No man earns the legs between which he is born, and I would propose to you that no man should be allowed automatic rank and power merely by right of that blind luck.

The Monarchy denies the people a basic right – I believe that it should be a fundamental right of the people of any world to elect their head of state and for every citizen to be eligible to hold that office. It is argued such a head of state is more accountable to the people, and that such accountability to the people creates a better nation.

Monarchy devalues the Senate – Monarchical prerogative powers can be used to circumvent normal democratic process with no accountability, and such processes are more desirable than not for any given nation-state.

A Monarchy demands deference citizens are expected to address members, however junior, of the royal family or noble families by extravagant titles and ranks. This can only serve the purpose of degrading the free citizen of Deralia and make him no more than a serf or peon.

While I believe you are an individual well qualified to be a head of state, I believe that your institution is the enemy of merit and aspiration, a man of Deralia is told he is free, that he may climb – but how is it equitable that one hundred “noble” families and your own family are granted special status which can never be aspired to by the people?

I realize that perhaps the throne was taken at the moment it was in order to mirror the ascent of “Emperor” Palpatine to his position, but I must ask you, do us free Deralians really wish to ape the actions of some coreward despot?

The monarchy makes Deralia appear 'backwards' – all of us wish Deralia to better! And I believe that the reason Deralia is not taken more seriously by the Coreworlders is that we are not a society which is at the forefront of political thinking. There must be Government by the people for the People, and so our agenda (I do believe we share one) will be seen as more pertinent if it has the explicit backing of elections.

Thus Julius Aquilinus Aurelius, I ask you as one free man to another. Please abolish the position of King, and abolish also the “Council of Lords”. I beseech you return Deralia back to the days of the Republican values, give the power back to the people’s representatives, the Senate and have them freely elect a Consul to Administrate Deralia. If you have the courage to make these actions you have my promise that I would fully support your run for office, and I have no doubt that you would be elected Consul.

Far more glorious it would be to be an elected Consul, far more upstanding, far more noble, than to be a man who rules simply by “right” of birth. I believe that we are grand enough, bold enough for this to be our time, our chance to grasp liberty by the hand and make it our own.

Julius Aquilinus Aurelius, do you have shown much courage in battle, and no small medal of initiative either in bringing battle to the enemies of Deralia, but I urge you to have the moral courage to take these actions.

Yours with all sincerity,

Catus Gravis
_____________
Senator for the Province of Campania Major
Former Prefect, Deralian Army
