Considering her question realistically for a long moment, he thought over the ramifications of her father's actions versus her own so far. At last, he shook his head slowly. "Lady, there are those within the Senate who will call you down for your father's actions, or attack you with snide comments or the like. Do not let them get to you. Simply prove quickly that your actions are for the good of the Empire and you will be fine. Chief of State Pestage is a reasonable man and he does not strike me as the sort to judge harshly on the actions of a predecessor.

"I wouldn't worry about it as long as you have a firm opening stance that proves all possible doubts wrong."

"Oh yes, a drink would be quite nice..." he said absentmindedly as he looked around the room, trying to match names with faces. He pointed at people (while they weren't looking, of course. Pointing at someone who saw you do it is obviously both rude and idiotic) as they walked towards the bar area, whispering their names to Ilanah and the likely suspects who were their dates or guests. He rather felt like a journalist who was name dropping.

"Oh! I love those..." he muttered excitedly as he grabbed a Telosian Twist. He sipped it and swirled the drink in his mouth before swallowing it, taking in all the flavor it possessed. "Good batch too." He also stopped a droid that had ambled their way and took an assortment of different hors d'oeuvres, offering some to Ilanah. He proceeded to nibble on those left in his possession but all the while his eyes scanned the room for any new arrivals.

"Mr. Ryner."

The voice was both pleasant and hard; an odd combination, but when Ryner turned and found himself faced by Moff Cole, he'd understand the oddity. Cole was by far a staunch supporter of humanity and Ryner's recent comments in the Senate had given Cole reason to speak to the politician. Cole did not see the purpose for an Interspecies Advisory Committee. Of course, it would be impolitic to say so.

"A pleasure to finally meet you firsthand. Tell me, Mr. Ryner... where do you come up with the fantastic ideas you put forth in the Senate? Many people I speak to have you on the tip of their tongues as a paragon of wisdom and justice. Perhaps, if your... friend... does not mind, I could borrow your brain for a few minutes?"

Yes Adoven Ryner was an impertinent youth. And yes he was aware he was most likely suspected of being politically in league with Mon Mothma (which he was), but he rather enjoyed the scandals and talks he stirred in the stuffy and reactionary capital. As someone called his name, Adoven turned around to face his interlocutor. He subtly gave a Rhinnalian once-over to the man in black as his mind whirred to assign a name to the face. An image of his makeshift guest registry popped up in his mind's eye and he could clearly visualize the name under the rotating holograph of this very person "Ah, Moff Cole" he quickly announced as though the man's identity had never been in doubt. He gave him a curt nod of the head as he presented his hand. And though his voice was polite, he rather felt like grimacing instead of smiling stupidly like he was currently doing.

Adoven couldn't help but chuckle genially as the Moff mentioned that he was regarded as a paragon of wisdom and justice. A rather disgraceful pest you mean, he thought as he pretended to be amused by the man's comment. He couldn't help but admire him though. From Cole's mindset, the comment was clearly sarcastic. But his delivery hadn't conveyed that fact at all. He was good, that one. "I don't believe you've met..." he said, motioning to Ilanah. Adoven took a step back and looked from one to the other, using his right hand to indicate each person as he spoke. "Moff Cole, I present you the new Chandrilan senator, the most honorable Ilanah Thanatos. And Ilanah, this is the esteemed Geoff Cole, Moff of the Abrion Sector." He rather felt like a host at a dinner party. Next thing you'd know, he'd list three things they had in common and would leave them to discuss them! Not that, he surmised, those two had anything in common.

"Ilanah, Moff Cole would like a word with me. You don't mind do you?" He rather wished she had said no, but he had pointed out so many people already as it were that he knew she was capable of putting on the pomp and pageantry on her own. She was, obviously, a smart and resourceful woman. "Shouldn't take too long, then." Giving her a sly wink as he left, Adoven walked side to side with Cole, his Telosian Twist firmly in his left hand. "Oh, I wouldn't declare myself a paragon of anything, really... But I do strive for justice, yes."

"Senator!" said the immediately recognizable voice of Rainier Brandt across the floor--a voice that sounded, as many had observed, supremely sure of itself. This was useful for giving commands, of course, but also for putting people at ease; he sounded, always, as though he knew what he was saying and what he was doing. Both of these uses served him well as the Moff of Imperial Center and, so he fancied himself, as something of a socialite, too. And, he would daresay, it served him well with the ladies. He was, one could say, the sort who could make a bland story into an amusing one by sheer merit of his delivery.

Noticing that a good number of his guests responded to 'Senator' and glanced in his direction and that, as usual, he had made himself the center of attention, he smiled his disarming smile and shrugged at his feigned faux pas. "Senator Fowlkes, that is," he said with a laugh, "Don't mind me, Senators! Do enjoy yourselves, please!" He had made his way over to Fowlkes a moment later, shook the Senator's hand in both of his. "Good to meet you, Senator," he said, cordially, "I'm glad you could make it." And so began another trait that Brandt was well known for; the social barrage. "Hope the traffic didn't trouble you," he began, "Takes some getting used to. How do you find Imperial Center? Satisfactory, I hope. Are you all moved into your new place? You're living on Republica, are you not? A stately neighborhood, I've always said. Stately. You're enjoying your drink, I hope. Oh! Do remind me later to tell you of all the best places to get a drink on Imperial Center. The Scarlet Thranta in particular has a fine bar, serves a sterling Telosian. Just sterling. Tell the maître d' that Rainier sent you. Trust me, you'll love it. I do hope you're having a good time? Excuse me for a moment though, I think I'm needed yonder, as they say on Dantooine. Oh, I do hope Senator Ray isn't here!" He laughed, which was possibly the first time he had breathed in the last few moments. He patted Fowlkes on the shoulder as he took his leave of him. "Do stay, Senator," he added, "I have a gift for you and Senator Thanatos. Where is Senator Thanatos anyway? Oh, there she is. Pardon." And he was gone, leaving poor Tremaine no doubt bewildered.

As it happened, he made his way to Ilanah at about the same moment that Cole had monopolized Mr. Ryner's attention. Ryner. Brandt remembered him. Well, he hadn't seen him address the Senate personally, but it had been widely spoken of. Not spoken well of, either. But no matter, it was Ilanah who interested him. "Senator," he said to her from behind. His voice was slower now. Cordial, yes, but more personal, too. "We meet at last," he said. "So glad you made it."

Cole glanced at Ilanah and smiled faintly. He extended no hand to her, but simply bowed to a forty-five degree angle. He was, like many who were members of the Imperial upper echelon, quite sexist and speciest, though he did a very good job of disguising it; almost to the point where many did not assume him anything out of the ordinary. Well, as ordinary as a Moff could be, that is.

"Charmed, Senator. I am sure that you will well represent your people in the illustrious Imperial Senate. For the glory of the Empire." He raised his glass in toast and took a sip. Cole was not much of a drinker. If anything, he preferred a clear head. A duelist, after all, could not afford to be off his game, and many things in life he approached as he approached his duels: calm, collected and fully intending to walk away the victor.

As Andoven joined him to the side, Cole leaned against one of the railings that ran about the room. Looking inwards, he considered his drink for a long moment. "Tell me, Speaker... do you truly believe the Senate has the best interests in mind for the Empire? Such a... politically active... committee as that which you represent, it must be difficult, seeing as many portray the Empire as standing against the nonhuman races."

Was Cole that daft? Did he seriously expect Adoven to blatantly claim he disagreed wholeheartedly with Palpatine and his ascension and all that he was doing? He wasn't that stupid. "I believe that his Excellency has the best interest for the Empire and this galaxy. How can anyone even doubt so or say otherwise?" a blatant lie that gave him acid reflux just uttering it. He gulped down the rest of his drink and his cheeks became redder still, as did his nose. It didn't take much alcohol... "Here..." he caught the attention of a serving droid, deposited his empty glass on the tray and picked a full one up. "But the Senate... I fear that many Senators and Representatives are self-serving their own interests and pushing their personal agendas." Sadly, this was true. The universe was not perfect, and whether in the Republic or in this Empire, corruption existed. The proof was standing right next to him.

"But to answer your question... Yes, it is rather hard to be... er... a bastion for wisdom and justice, was it? People get so comfortable and cozy in their little routines. So what if I shock them a little? People need to hear all the sides of a story to make their own judgments. But if they disagree with me, well, that's part of the game. No harm done." He would remain as clement and sporting as could be and give the impression of being stupider than he was. He would also skirt the nonhuman topic all night if need be. He knew Cole was no doubt a staunch speciest and it was pointless to anger him. He would not give him such satisfaction. Moreover, he did not want to cause some sort of scene.

"I never mentioned his Excellency, Mr. Ryner."

Cole smiled faintly, fixing the man with a stare. Ryner seemed jumpy all of a sudden. Whether or not the rumors were true tying Ryner to Mon Mothma was not Cole's concern. Cole simply wanted to understand the man better. It never hurt to learn, after all. The fact that he was jumpy spoke volumes as did the fact that he drank his liquor so quickly. In short, Cole was able to discern that the man did indeed disagree with some of the Empire's policies, even if Ryner chose to live by them as best he could in a public view.

"The Senate... the Senate is a battleground as surely as the one I left only a number of hours ago at Roon. Instead of ships, you fight with words. But the actions in the Senate leave a trail of bodies just as large as those left floating in space when I departed Roon. We are no different in some regards, Mr. Ryner. We both fight for what we believe in with staunch conviction. It is a shame you were not a warrior. Alas... some men must fight with the words instead."

He shrugged, willing to let the species issue go. There was nothing to be gained by baiting the man.

More than a little pleased at Senator Ryuun's answer, Taja finished her drink and stole another glance around the room. Several Senator's and Imperial officers seemed to be mingling, keeping a somewhat formal air despite this being a party. It would seem that politics didn't end when the Senate doors were closed.
"Oh, my dear Senator Ryuun, my opening stance will be very firm, I assure you of that" she said quietly.

She was momentarily distracted by the Moff shouting of Senator Fowlkes, then smiled, more to herself than to anyone in particular.
"It was a pleasure to have met you, Senator Ryuun. Hopefully my upcoming actions in the Senate will be enough to warrant your support. Unfortunately, I must return and address any questions which have been posed to me".
She stood, her feather shawl flowing to her waist, and extended a hand once more.
"Perhaps we can meet in a less crowded venue once I'm settled on Imperial Centre?" she asked, waiting for him to kiss her hand, before making her exit.

Accepting her hand graciously, accompanied with a bow and a kiss upon the back, he straightened, releasing her appendage.

"We will certainly see how things go, Lady Lohden. Druckenwell and Kaal may likely have items in common that can be beneficial to one another. As you said, Lady, another time."

With a smile, he'd watch her walk off. The Senate was likely to be more refreshing with people like her around.

Ilanah nodded lightly at Moff Cole, offering no more than a slight yet sweet smile and a curtsey. When Adoven asked to be excused for a moment, she nervously fiddled with the stem of her glass with her gloved fingertips, and started to protest. Before she could get even one word out, a smooth voice spoke behind her. She turned her head and looked over her shoulder, and her gaze locked on Brandt as being the owner of that voice.

"I assume you are Moff Brandt And obviously you already know who I am....." She said as she turned to face him and extended her gloved hand to him. Her gaze trailed along behind Adoven for only a moment before she directed her full attention at Brandt. "Thank you for the invitation to the party. This place is certainly lovely." As she said that, her gaze drifted to the transparisteel ceiling, then back to him.

"Though entirely unnecessary. You must have gone to so much trouble to put on such a soiree?" She asked before she took a small sip of the champagne that she had been holding, untouched, since she had arrived.

Adoven tried to regain his footing and brushed Cole's gaze off. He was not about to cave in or something. "But you did mention the Senate, your Excellency. And his Excellency the Grand Vizier is a part of the Senate, is he not? Ah! But did you think I meant His Majesty? I express myself so badly sometimes. I am sorry for this confusion." He wasn't altogether certain if Cole had indeed meant Palpatine or not, but he'd try to muddy the water. As for his drinking, Ryner always drank quickly, no matter the situation. Sadly, it also meant he got tipsy (and then drunk) rapidly too.

"That is quite the analogy you make there. Absolutely right too, I'd say. And speaking of Roon, how did we fare? Or are you not allowed to disclose such information?" He didn't quite know how to react at being told he'd have made a good warrior, though. He had never even considered it. "Oh, I doubt I'd be a good warrior. Too... squeamish?" Oh that he was. He had received training as a child on how to shoot a blaster and had become a rather good marksman, but he had never shot a live target let alone blew up a ship fill of beings.

"Roon? Roon was a disaster... and utter slaughter... for the pirates, that is, my dear Mr. Ryner. When the fate of a planet is riding upon your shoulders, I am sure you could just as easily pull the trigger. Loss of human life saddens me, of course, but they chose their path and reaped the reward. The people of Roon will sleep more soundly and the surviving pirates I allowed to flee will likely carry their tale far and wide, and the Abrion Sector will remain better off for the tales they carry."

Cole smiled faintly as he looked Ryner over. A political creature. A cowardly, timid man who would not likely pull the trigger on a blaster to save his own life. It was a shame, really. Ryner had potential, if he could be weaned off Imperial Center and placed out in the Outer Rim somewhere. Perhaps... perhaps it was worth a thought.

"Tell me, Mr. Ryner, would you perhaps come visit the Abrion Sector? There are a number of alien species on Roon and I'd like to see that they are properly being cared for. Their rights and such seen to. Would you consider it as a favor for me?"

The reason for Holt's distaste for titles was not unlike Ja'nar's, the difference being that rather than wanting to be normal as a boy, he had simply wanted not to have his nose bloodied. His noble background had done him no favors in the spartan schools he had attended on Anaxes; rather, it had only brought about the disfavor of his peers. He was proud, though, that no bully had ever bloodied his nose and escaped without being bruised and bloodied himself. The young Gordon had usually held his own and, when he did lose a fight, it was invariably a Pyrrhic victory for his opponent. The result of all of this was that he despised nobility and was intent on succeeding on his own merits (one might say that he felt compelled to prove his worth), both in school and, later, in the Imperial fleet. And indeed he had.

He was tempted to doubt whether Ja'nar herself had, since, indeed, he suspected most of the individuals at this party had not. But he reminded himself that he didn't know the woman and that with women, as with war, one made undue assumptions at one's peril. What he did know about her--other than the fact that she was, without doubt, the most striking woman he had ever danced with and, possibly, had ever met--was that she was reasonable; disappointingly reasonable, as it were, since Holt had been rather expecting something of a spar over his comment. But there was something refreshing about this, too. It was so rare that he let go of his politics, even (or perhaps especially) on an occasion like this, that it must have been a rare person indeed to make him do so. He found himself considering saying to her something banal about the music or the weather, and promptly resisted this idea. "I don't like these people," he said honestly, his eyes perusing the others in the room without interest as he and Ja'nar turned to the music. "You'll find the more you know them, the less you'll like them, too," he explained. "Imperial Center is known for bringing together people who don't like each other." He met her eyes, much preferring them to the sight of the other guests, "Not including you and I, I hope."

He glanced away again, looking idly at nothing in particular as they danced. "After all, my dancing isn't all that bad," he added. With no smile on his face or humor in his voice, it was hard to tell if he was joking. He was dancing reasonably well, though, or at least as well as he had to. True, his timing might have been just slightly off or his grip just slightly firm, but it was forgivable for a man in his line of work. Many other things he did in his line of work were not forgivable, however.

Ja’nar’s dislike of titles was because she felt as if she had not earned them yet. The people of her planet would argue that statement. They all felt as if Ja’nar had earned her title of Queen there. They loved and adored her but to Ja’nar herself. She was constantly making mistakes. She did not deserve her people’s love and admiration because she was still fighting to keep them safe and to keep their freedoms and rights intact. She was starting to feel as if she would fail at this, that she would let down all of those people who were counting on her, who trusted her to do what was in their best interests. She felt like she was one of the few senators that still tried to do that. That were not out to make themselves richer or promoted to a better position within the senate or the Empire. She didn’t want a better position, she didn’t want to be in the senate, she wanted to be on Garos dealing with her planet only, not galactic politics.

Ja’nar was a woman, who had earned her titles but felt as if she had not. At least the people of Garos thought she had. While not all agreed with what she did, they often saw that she always had their best interests at heart. She would smile up to him. She knew how to play these games. She knew Holt had hoped for her to react in a negative and unbecoming way when he mentioned he had just gotten in from Carratos. She did not agree with what was happening but she knew when to voice those opinions and when not to. She also knew that she needed as many friends in the Empire as possible at the moment at all levels. The day would come when she would need help. Probably not for herself but for her son or her people. She was willing to practically sell her soul in order to secure that future help now.

Ja’nar would listen to Holt speak as a little smile touches her lips as she gazes up into his eyes, “I know,” she whispers softly as she looked at those people who have gathered “honestly I keep to myself within the senate because I know if I got close to any of these people they would just let me down in the end.” That statement said a lot about Ja’nar. She was friendly but never truly got close to people. She kept them at a distance. She never shared personal details, that is why the fact that she had a son was still mostly a secret. Also most didn’t like the fact that she tended to stay calm within the senate and reasonable. They hated that. They hated that she tried to find the middle ground on most issues or came right out and said they were being stupid about the actions they wanted to take against the citizens of the Empire. Ja’nar would smile once more to him, “I would hope we were not included in that statement, though I may not like nor agree with what you do for a living, I think you may actually be a pretty deceit person.” She would flash her charming little smile, as a hint of laughter danced through her eyes.

Ja’nar would move to rest her head gently against his shoulder for a minute as they danced, she would shake it a bit “No, your dancing is not bad at all.” She would lift her head up to look into his eyes for a moment “Whoever taught you did a good job.” She would once more smile. His firm grip didn’t bother her, nor did his timing being slightly off. She rarely had the opportunity to dance and when it was not prefect she didn’t mind. “It has been a very long time since I last danced”
