"Is the Senator in?"

The receptionist looked up at Garik Taynor with an expression of surprise and distaste that had become familiar to the Lieutenant. This place—the Senatorial apartment complex—was above his pay grade, and every guard, receptionist, and attendant made sure he knew it with their incredulous glares. He did look out of place; he wore his Coruscant Security Force uniform beneath a trench coat, and his profession, as a result, was not apparent. His boots, too, were old and worn, and he sported a hat whose brim hung over his unshaven face (unshaven, in this case, because he'd just had a long, long flight from Tatooine and had been occupied with his investigation of the Imperial Center bombing since then). "I believe so," the receptionist said, "Do you have an appointment?"

Taynor pulled back the collar of his trench coat enough to reveal his Lieutenant's rank insignia, and said nothing.

"I see," the receptionist said. "The turbolift is just through there. I'll activate it for you, and notify Senator Thanatos on your way up."

Taynor nodded. "Thank you," he said. His voice, as ever, as deep and could best be described as gravelly. Or sandy, perhaps. He sounded like a man who drank a lot as, indeed, he was. Never on the job though. Or rarely on the job, at any rate. Certainly not this job, the Imperial Center bombing, which had monopolized his attention over the past few weeks. So far, he had made little progress and it didn't seem as though it was going to. He was here, at the residence of Ilanah Thanatos, following up on a very unpromising lead, as he had been all day. But he hadn't made Lieutenant by being lazy.

A few moments later, he was on the Senator's floor and approached the door to her suite. He knocked on it, authoritatively. Considering what a "knock on the door" could mean under the Empire, Taynor wasn't the worst of reasons for it. But he wasn't the best, by any means.

The Chandrillian senator lounged back in the leather chair at the desk of her home office in the condo that she had been given. Yes, many of the other senators lived there, but she had never seen any of them, save for Senator Fowlkes a few times. He seemed to enjoy Chandrillian wine, so she enjoyed having him over. The company was nice. That evening, however, she was alone and trying to concentrate on getting some work accomplished. The arguing in senate regarding the Capital Ships Act had grown tiresome and she felt that her time might be better spent if she left early and worked from home some. That, and she was hoping that there would be word from an old friend on Chandrila when she got home. Alas, there was not.

Instead of working, she stared out the floor to ceiling window into the dark, at the glittering skyline that stretched on for miles and miles around the city planet. It was so different from home, so much so that the Senator found herself homesick more often than not. It was unfortunate that Adoven had to leave. Having another from her home world there had quelled that feeling of homesickness, and once he had gone she had felt it return in full force.

A sudden knock at the door interrupted her complete zone out. She frowned a moment and sat up before she listened again and heard a rather authoritative knock on the door. Ilanah slipped her feet back into her shoes and smoothed her silk gown as she walked down the hallway into the foyer of the condo. She reached out and pressed a button and the door slid open and she looked up, not recognizing the man at the door at all.

"I'm sorry, can I help you?" She asked as she took a slight step back from the door, but she made certain not to invite the stranger in.

"Coruscant Security Force, Ma'am," Garik said, pulling back his collar to reveal the CSF pin he wore on his lapel. "I'm Detective Taynor," he added, then paused for a moment as he found his eyes perusing the Senator's attire. It was a brief, demure moment. His expression was one of curiosity, yes, but a chaste, professional curiosity. He was a detective, after all. He cleared his throat. "Sorry if I've come at a bad time," he said. "I have a few questions for you regarding the Imperial Center bombing of some weeks ago. If you have a moment—and it will only be a moment, I assure you—I would appreciate it."

It hadn't occurred to him that he might be bothering Senator Thanatos at an unreasonable hour. The travel lag was part of the reason, of course, but he had also been working long, tiring hours on this case. There were a few reasons for this, and it was certainly true that Garik's tyrant of a boss, Moff Brandt, was one of them. Garik was also dedicated to the case because, of course, the slaughter of innocent men, women, and children wasn't something that sat well with him. But perhaps the real reason he worked so hard on this case, and on all of his cases, was to distract himself from his past. Work took his mind off of it, as did alcohol, of course. The hardest Corellian whiskey didn't sting as badly as his memories did, and so he opted for the lesser of the two evils.

But not tonight. No, tonight it was his work that distracted him, even now into the long hours of the evening.

The Senator blinked a little as he showed his identification. Coruscant Security Force? What would they want with her? Immediately, she began trying to remember the events of the evening of the bombing. Where had she been, anyway? She wasn't sure that she remembered entirely. Idly, she looked at the delicate silver chrono that circled her left wrist and she nodded.

"Of course, Detective. Won't you come in?" Ilanah asked politely as she stepped back from the door. Once he would get inside, she would make sure that it slid shut behind him.

"That was a terrible incident, wasn't it, Detective? I hope that you are well on your way to finding the....monster....that would do something like that. In the middle of busy Imperial Center, no less. How terrible." She said. Her expression of condolences to the families had been sent in the form of flowers, and of course charitable donations for any children that were orphaned. Children were always her main concern when something like that happened.

Finally she snapped her attention back to the Detective, though it wasn't diverted long enough to be noticed. "Can I fix you a cup of coffee or tea while you ask your questions? Though I am not sure what questions you could have for me." Truthfully, she wasn't sure why he wanted to question her. And again, she started trying to remember where she was that night. But she did know that she was no where near the incident, luckily.

"That would be—" he had just stepped inside the Senator's suite when his comlink beeped. "One moment, please," he said, retrieving it from his belt. It was a text message, and one that he greeted with an expression of surprise. "I'm sorry, Senator," he said to her, returning the comlink to his belt as he glanced back to her apologetically. "There's been a development in the case and I'm urgently needed back at headquarters. Your questioning may not be necessary, but if so I should like to contact you later this week." He raised his hat to her for a moment, they likely exchanged pleasantries, and he left the apartment in a hurry.
