When they came, it was not from the direction of Volus. It was from the opposite side, possibly unexpected from the shuttle that had only come but less than a day before. They came without markings proclaiming them of Volus, or any Volusian affiliate, in fact. They came though, armed with information and with a manner that spoke them to be nothing but men bent on a vengeance. The Vjun station, as all knew, was a plainly scientific place. It had no value or use to a raider. It was certainly too flimsy to utilize as a base of any sorts, and the valuable on board? Not likely to be enough to equal out the cost of fuel and armaments expended in the endeavor. Still, they came.

When they emerged from hyperspace, they were well organized, or as well organized as pirates could be, relatively speaking. They had knowledge of the telemetry of the station, of the defensive pair of platforms that were positioned to cover it. They had knowledge of the defensive fighters as well. The only thing that had not been discerned by the sensor scan via Theta shuttle was that the station itself had been armed with quad lasers. Nonetheless, the plans were laid and now they were executed.

Due to the close emergence, the initial reaction of the pirates was to break and move away, as well as engage. The YZ-775, called Gloom, had emerged oriented towards (ideally) one of the pair of defensive platforms. Providing it was still where it had been, the Gloom would rather rapidly and efficiently acquire and attack, unleashing a pair of proton torpedoes, as well as a storm of fire from its double turbolaser turret and its pair of double laser cannon turrets. The trio of Pinook fighters, cheaply made and lightly armed with only two laser cannons, would buzz the second gun emplacement, plinking away with their cannons to distract the crew within while the quartet of Planetary Defenders, the actual knockout punch, fired at maximum laser range with their forward dual laser cannons and, more importantly, each craft fired off a single concussion missile at the emplacement.

The G9 Rigger, called Toad's Edge, spearheaded the attack on the station, remaining at a distance (due to known starfighter support) and fired away at crucial structures (notably the command pod) with a trio of heavy blasters and a laser cannon. The JumpMaster 5000 (Caliph's Sun), modified to have a better engine and weaponry, circled the station, firing with an ion cannon and a quad laser cannon, as well as taking the opportunity (if able), to squeeze off a single proton torpedo. The quartet of R-41 Starchasers would be assisting in this endeavor as well, engaging at a distance with most of their concussion missiles, a total of twenty-four missiles.

Well outside sensor range and off the beaten path, but close enough to respond in a matter of minutes, the Munificent star frigate Sword of Justice stood waiting in the wings.

The station's defence systems detected the arrival of the enemy raiders a few seconds before the arrival. Naturally the automated defence systems had been somewhat reconfigured after the obvious scan which had recently been made, resulting in the defence platforms being rather differently placed to the expectation (naturally they would have been regularly relocated as a matter of policy).

The station's shields activated and the distress beacon was activated immediately as the warning of arrival was heard (sending a distress signal to Vjun, the Imperial Navy and Volusians), they were a scientific station with no aggressive intentions, these shields were strong, being roughly half those of a Victory-class vessel and so were barely scratched by the fire from the separatists so far. The fighter compliment was not launched, it seemed a waste to send his pilots to a pointless fate. The already launched scout fighter which was orbiting a goodly distance from the station simply gunned its engines and headed towards Volus, also broadcasting a distress signal. The eight quadlasers on the station, however, and the gunnery platforms opened fire with coordinated precision on the raiders, the turbolasers targeting the larger vessels and the quadlasers raking any who moved close to the defence platforms, also forming a storm of fire about them to discourage torpedo fire, acting as the well trained fire team they were.

The station commandant hailed the Separatists "The Volusian Defence force and Imperial Sector Navy have been informed of your raid. We are a civilian platform carrying students and scientists and little wealth, we are willing to negotiate terms of surrender. We are not a military installation, we have no quarrel with you. Such possessions as we have aboard our station we are willing to surrender."

The adjustment to the static defenses did indeed catch them off-guard for a moment, resulting in the death of one of the Pinook pilots as his craft was shredded. With the obvious changes though, the Red Mynock pirates reacted accordingly, moving to engage the gun platforms. The quad laser cannons did discourage any vessels coming close to the station itself, as quad lasers were still quite deadly. Those that had closed with the station broke off, heading for hyperspace with the utmost haste, though not before moving to fire with cannon against the already-attacked gun emplacements, which, likely as not under the current fire from the more numerous and agile vessels, would be suffering. It was even a possibility that the one assaulted by the Gloom was destroyed rather quickly. The Gloom, after all, was rather well shielded and armed and if need be, it would loose more torpedoes.

The Caliph's sun took some rather severe blows while fleeing from the station's fire, it's aft shield generators quite dead and damage to it's quad laser rendering the turret inoperable pending repairs. It's part in this fight was done. The R-41's, still able and agile, had moved to concentrate on the other turret, loosing their remaining eight concussion missiles at it. One of the remaining Pinook fighters, winged badly by a turbolaser shot, spiraled out of control during a turn and was quite likely to impact into the gun emplacement at full speed.

The Toad's Edge had moved to fall back rapidly as well, not missing the opportunity to take parting shots at the turret as, slowly, all the attacking craft began to retreat, though the retreat would go faster once the emplacements were taken out.

The fighters continued to have fire rained on them, the fire being intensified on the damaged one to prevent it impacting into the turbolaser platform. The station continued its distress signal, even if it seemed they had discouraged this wave of raiders, it was clear that something was planned with the scan, then this raid, it only followed that there would be a greater attack next.

The platform with the multiple torpedoes targeted at it took some damage, however, while losing much of its shields it remained intact as the quadlaser fire around it provided it with an excellent anti-torpedo defence, also, in lining up their torpedo runs would expose themselves to fire which would be aimed with lethal effect. They also continued to broadcast their civilian status and that they were not a threat, etc.

Equally any vessels in the area remaining would find quadlaser and turbolaser fire slashing at them.

The damage Pinook fighter's shields were chewed away and a wing was torn off, adding to its spin and, moments before it would have exploded, it smacked right into the the gun emplacement. Considering the damage it had taken from the Pinook fighters and the warheads and cannon from the Planetary Defenders, it might well explode at this point.

Gun emplacements were described as having light shields and moderate armor; they were not made to stand up to numerous laser and torpedo attacks. The Gloom, having taken damage from the turbolasers more so than the quad lasers, had turned and moved out of range of the quad lasers, it's dual turbolasers and pair o dual laser cannons continuing to engage the stationary emplacement while fluctuating shields to where they were needed most. It had been said that a skilled pilot with a shielded craft could usually overcome such emplacements as well. If the Gloom and Toad's Edge failed to finish destroying the emplacement, the R-41s would swing back around and strike at it, but by now, it was quite reasonable to assume that the overwhelming firepower had taken its toll.

Eventually the platforms shields were ground down, but allowing the crew to take to their escape pods before the destruction engulfed them. The crewmen in their enviro suits with plentiful oxygen awaiting collection as the battle raged around them. The Sensor Array, however, kept up its withering fire. The deflectors of the platforms had not held out for an implausible amount of time, however, considering they were shielded to 80 SBD, being considerably stronger than that of an X-Wing which had a proven ability to sustain a couple of torpedo hits before destruction.

Being extremely small and fitting only two crew, gun emplacements were not likely to have escape pods unless specially fitted for such. An X-wing, of course, could not take dozens of hits from laser cannons as well as either concussion and multiple proton torpedoes before exploding. Face Loran, after all, would nearly be killed by a crazed Myn Donos and his fighter nearly destroyed by a single proton torpedo, though this event was far in the future.

And so, with no further losses and only some carbon scoring, the Red Mynock pirates jumped to hyperspace, their mission completed.

And far and away, still out of sensor range, the Sword of Justice made its jump as well.

The Vjunite Scientists awaited the arrival of the Imperial or Volusian forces. Once news was passed to Vjun of the raid, more defences were swiftly ordered, and financed organised with the Sector Government to assure the placement of an Imperial Picket until their arrival.

As soon as the message was received Volus would send several ships to the coordinates of the Space Station. At the head of the small group would be a corellian corvette which would be flanked by multiple shuttles and two dozen smaller fighter craft. It would have been about 10 minutes after the message was sent but the forces would arrive and would move to put themselves in between the station and the attackers with the fighters going on to begin fighting the pirates.

((you have no right to assume that Volusian Forces did NOT come. I control the volusians and had four days to post a response. Anything less is considered an auto and is invalid. Now if you will both please, edit your posts to include the volusian arrival))

The Volusians had arrived, but only in time to pick up bodies from the ruins of the platforms. The raid had been lightning fast, and it was evident that the 10 minute response time was not nearly fast enough to stop this sort of thing.

((Despite the length of our posts and whatnot, Jamie is correct, it was quite intended as a lightning raid.))
