Two weeks after the events of Move Against Volus

The Lady-class luxury liner Jewel of Winter was a beautiful vessel; both inside and out. She had seen service for several years and never once had there been a problem other than unruly passengers or brief shipboard affairs that led to angry husbands. All in all, its route that took it among the Core Worlds and the Outer Rim had never been plagued by pirates. The captain, it was said, was one of the luckiest drivers in the entire company of Raouth Freight Lines. Of course, the captain stood on formality and the Jewel's quartet of twin blaster turrets were always manned and ready for use. This particular journey though, his security compliment were underhanded by twelve men; a fact that gave the captain pause, but with enough wealthy people on board, he was not about to cancel his trip. Against his better judgment, he proceeded with the trip.

Unfortunately, people tended to be creatures of self-interest. All it had taken was a pair of bribed security officers to allow a few crates to pass unchecked aboard the liner. The officers assumed it was a drug operation; they'd been told not to ask questions or speak of it and they were paid handsomely enough to keep their mouths shut.

The journey was at a halfway point when Shiva's men struck. The liner had departed Imperial Center and arrived for its first scheduled stop: Corellia. In the meantime, the six men and four women who made up his infiltration team moved the moment the ship departed. The cargo hold was the destination for three men and one of the women. The mission did not get off to a good start though; a pair of crewmen had to be subdued in the cargo hold almost right off the bat, ensuring they had to work fast. Joined by two more of the men, the correct crates were found and opened. In one lay a number of armor plates, which were quickly donned, as well as E-11 blaster rifles, which were hoisted, as well as a DLT-19. Attired and armed, the second crate was quickly opened. Ten belts rigged with sensors one might find in a hospital lay there; each belt holding eight thermal detonators. Quickly and efficiently, these belts were strapped on and the sensors affixed to areas where the pulse was prominent. These belts were suicide weapons; designed to trigger by the wearer or, in the event the wearer was killer; upon the wearer's death. Once the remaining three members of their team were set, the groups split into a pair of five-man teams and moved out. Behind them, in one of the crates that had been opened and resealed, the final crate, lay a proton bomb, armed and ready to detonate via remote that hung by a chain from the leader's neck.

---

An hour later, it was all but over. The ship's captain, an older man, sat in a chair on the bridge, still stunned by the violence and stuck in the rut of helpless rage and guilt. In the corner lay four bodies; three from ship's security and the chief navigator, who had tried to go for a sidearm. The hijackers had been too professional though. Of a crew of one hundred and two, most were still unaware they had been hijacked. The remaining security compliment of five were secured in binders in a conference room down the hall. The doors to the cargo hold and the weapons locker had been sealed from the bridge and the rest of the bridge crew were being held at gunpoint at their posts.

At last, the lead hijacker issued orders. "Captain, you will use your holonet to send this message to the Coruscant Journal and every ship that can hear in this system. 'To all the capitalist bureaucrats: we have hijacked this liner. You will comply with our demands or six hundred innocent people will die. All ships in the immediate area will move to no less than ten thousand kilometers. If any come closer, we will execute a hostage. We will release these hostages when the following demands are met: we want one man in an unarmed shuttle to deliver ten million credits. We wish the release of all Vjun prisoners from Volusian captivity. We want full publication of our cause and a journalist on this vessel to tell our story to. We want safe passage from this ship to a destination of our choosing."

With trembling hands, the captain delivered the message.

Being on station near by, the Modified Acclamator-I Assault Ship Leveler, arrived. It did not heed the terrorist's demands, for it arrived directly ahead of the Jewel of Winter, facing bow to bow. There were two things that influenced the decision to do so. One, the Empire's policy of not negotiating with terrorists. Two, Valerian personally did not believe that these men were willing to act. There was one thing about hijackers, they were usually cowards... hence the grabbing of civilians and daring the authorities to jump at them. Well, the Empire sure as hell would jump, and jump they did with the Leveler. After a few moments, a message was sent to the Jewel of Winter, as the Leveler's forward batteries obtained firing solutions on the bridge. "This is the Imperial Assault Ship Leveler, you have one minute to surrender yourselves to Imperial custody," said the transmission, which repeated itself, every five seconds with a new time. It then proceeded to deploy a squadron of TIE Fighters and four MAAT Gunships.

This was, however, a distraction, as two Lambda Shuttles had jumped in at the stern of the ship, as close as was possible, and latched on to opposite sides of the hull, where the engine room was. Immediately, they began cutting their way into the ship, and standing within the Lambdas, ready to take back the ship, were Special Missions Troopers. By the time the transmission began playing, the hull of the ship gave way, and fourty Special Missions Troopers stormed the engine room, taking aim at anything that presented a threat.

The first mistake made by the Imperials was the fact that they had not jammed any sensors or transmissions. When the Acclamator-I jumped in, many of the people panicked, running amok in the common areas, trying to find family members or return to their staterooms. All but three of the team were pulled from the bridge and into the corridors beyond and away. However, the live feed from the Holonet still continued to the Coruscant Journal, the nearby planet of Corellia and anyone and everyone able to tap into the feed. This meant they heard Captain Gregor's fear-choked voice as he said, "Oh... oh no... they've locked weapons on the bridge." It also meant that when the Lambda shuttles showed up and began cutting in, the leader's voice, cold and impersonal, could be heard as well.

"It looks like they don't want to save you, Captain. Jet, kill three of the bridge crew. Tuck, give the passengers a bit of fire. They're moving into the engine compartment? Seal off the doors and vent it into space." Three blaster shots followed, confirmed by a single moan of pain that stretched out into a death-rattle and the sobbing of Captain Gregor as he pleaded with them not to kill him.

The leader spoke again. "Imperial forces, back off this vessel. We will not hesitate to kill more hostages. Your actions just cost three men their lives. How much further will you push it?"

It was not a mistake by the Imperials to allow the transmission, for there was no direct link to the Coruscant Journal. This was the era of the Empire, not the Republic... such things were of the past, for ISB Headquarters were watching the feed, and it would be up to the Director and the Grand Vizier as to what to do with the video. In the engine room, the Special Missions Troopers were prepared, with gear that allowed them to operate in vacuum; a standard precaution when boarding an enemy controlled vessel, for venting compartments into space was a favored tactic in unoccupied areas. They were quick in their action, but not quick enough, as only four were able to gain entry to the rest of the ship before the lock-down occurred and the section was vented. Those that were left behind in the engine section went to work on disabling the engines and hyperdrive, as well as repressurizing the section and opening the doors by slicing into the ship's computers. Those that were ahead, went to work, splitting into two teams, on making their way to the bridge.

On the bridge of the Leveler, Commander Valerian stood, watching the feed. He shook his head at their unwillingness to back down. All for a group of three merchants locked up on Volus. It was ridiculous, and senseless... then again, all terrorists were. When the count down hit zero, Valerian did not blink however, and thus the game of Reussian roulette was over, for it had come to the chamber with the bullet in it, and he nodded to his tactical officer. Immediately, six quad turbolaser turrets opened fire on the bridge of the Jewel of Winter, with the desired effect of disabling the vessel and killing the terrorist leader. Unknown to Valerian, it would also possibly end the threat of the proton bomb for the leader did not have a dead man switch and needed to activate it in an amount of time that was unlikely to enable him to do so.

The bridge of the Jewel of Winter disintegrated under the barrage of fire from the Leveler, effectively killing the leader and his two cohorts who were with him. For ending the threat of the bomb though, it did not do so much. There were backup protocols and tertiary protocols; it was a military operation after all, and not a simple terrorist action. With seven men left, the shields down on the vessel and Imperial troops pouring in, it seemed like a bad idea to be caught without a bargaining chip. As such, wholesale slaughter might be one of the only ways out.

The remaining seven regrouped under the leadership of one of the females, the second in command, and began to hurry their way to the cargo hold. It would not require being next to the explosive, only a few dozen meters away. It was getting that close that might well be the problem. The confusion of civilians though, was likely to hamper some of the Imperial assistance that came to rescue them. For now, the hijackers ignored the people about them who were looking to find cover and instead focused on their objective.

As the bridge gave way, and sealed itself off due to damage, the slicers were able to repressurize the engine room. As soon as the bridge gave way, the MAAT Gunships proceeded to dock with the Jewel of Winter. 120 Army Troopers poured into the ship from them, storming their way into the common areas to hunt down any remaining terrorist resistance and give any attention to the passengers as was required. During this time, the Special Missions Troopers, the team that made it out of the engine room, headed for the cargo hold to secure it now that the bridge was gone, while those in the engine room went to work on routing ship controls to the consoles within.

The TIE Fighters swarmed around the hull of the Jewel of Winter, in groups of four, ready for any attempt to escape by craft. On the bridge, Valerian watched, the Leveler still unmoved, as they boarding action was underway. "Major Kefka, is the vessel secure?" he asked on a secure comm frequency. "No, sir. I'm with a team that's taking over the ship's controls in the engine room, completely sealed off from the rest of the ship. I have a team securing the cargo hold now, and the Troopers that just came in are to secure the common areas and then do a room by room search, while their medics attend to the passengers," replied the seasoned and aged officer. Kefka was a lifer, through and through... he lived and breathed the Army, and had worked from a lowly Private up to his current rank through the Clone Wars til now, serving in the Judicial Forces previously. He was invaluable, and knew just about every op that it was possible for them to run by memory. This was one that had been practiced time and again, and every variable was taken in stride. The team of eight that were ahead, by now, had reached the cargo hold, and were sweeping it for anything amiss, including a bomb.

The Imperials were known for their efficiency. They were known for shrugging off losses and pouring out the blood of their men like water to achieve an objective. It was clear and blatant in the fact that they committed sixteen ships and one hundred sixty soldiers to subduing seven armed people on board the vessel. Efficiency though, was what would get them killed today. Shiva was efficient too; efficient in a much different way than the Empire. Oh, he was willing to spill the blood of his own, but only when a clear gain could be made. Shiva set plans within plans within plans, product of a diseased and paranoid mind that had kept the Separatist commander alive past the time when many of his counterparts had fallen.

The proton bomb had three methods of detonation. The first was the dead-man switch, set to go off if triggered and then released. That method had gone up in smoke, along with the bridge. The second method was a remote-activated five minute countdown, sent by a datapad from a certain distance. This method would not be practical, as the seven remaining members had barricaded themselves into a conference room and were prepared for a siege to the death against the Imperials. The third and final method was one they had not been informed of; a proximity detonation. Shiva's explosives expert had set the bomb to ensure that, should his agents be killed or otherwise incapacitated, the point would still be gotten across. Eight minutes after the proton bomb had been armed and the cargo hold shut, a rather simple droid brain came online, equipped with a detonator mechanism and life-sensing systems tied in with a range sensor.

It was here that the Imperials had made their error. The Imperials had practiced time and time again for a hostage crisis; perhaps even for the case that the hijacking terrorists might be willing to sacrifice their own lives in exchange for their beliefs. It was for this reason that it seemed odd that the Imperials had not worked more slowly; more cautiously. The cargo hold was in a remote part of the vessel, of course, off limits to passengers, and with the crew tied up, so to speak, there had been only a slim chance of someone triggering the explosive. In this case though, it worked as planned. The life sign sensors detected the Imperial troops outside the cargo hold. The trigger was set in motion so that well before they even fully made their way in, well before the doors could even be fully opened, the droid brain detonated the explosive.

A proton bomb was a massively powerful weapon, capable of destroying buildings and ships from without with quite some ease. Inside an already damaged passenger liner, it would be spectacular. The ensuing explosion was likely to take the Jewel of Winter, as well as the pair of docked Lambda shuttles and the MAAT gunships. Whether or not the TIE fighters were destroyed by concussive force or debris hurled from the ship was questionable; it all depended on how close their pilots were flying to the craft in question.

Shiva laughed as he read the reports from his informants. Word got out, as it always did. It had not made the major news networks yet; the Empire was likely covering up certain things, he had no doubt, but word spread. There had been merchant ships around Corellia and traders tended to talk in hushed tones over drinks and to friends when they thought nobody was listening. There was no denying the fact that Imperials had messed up quite badly. Hundreds of civilians and Imperial soldiers dead. Tens of millions of credits of equipment lost. Oh, this one would be good when it hit the news stands. For now though, there was more to escalate, much more to do and plan. It wouldn't be wise for Shiva to remain at Rinn if the axe fell; he had every intention of keeping his operation mobile for now. Credits flowed in... and death for the Imperials flowed out.
