| Deralia was crushed under the weight of Ribaldequin's rule. Few messages seemed to get in or out, and Shiva's widespread network of contacts all but said that Deralia was a world that was likely going to be broken under the tyranny of Imperial might; if not openly, then by more subtle means such as taxation and forced labor. In short, Deralia, unlike Volus and Dantooine, was a world ripe for the plucking, much like a headless chicken. Also much like a headless chicken, it seemed unlikely that Ribaldequin would assume an axe was swinging his way. The first order of business was to scout, not the Tammuz Sector entirely, for it was well-tended to by its Moff, but Deralia itself. To this end, a solitary transport that had been rented under false names, specifically a YZ-775 that sported the name of Lola, entered the Deralia System under the guise of asteroid-finding. The men on board were, after all, looking for scientific research.

| Thesh looked on Deralia, to continue the metaphor, as more of a two-headed fowl; with two leaders with discordant goals. King Deralius, the traditionalist who sought to glorify Deralia and its unique culture, history, and politics, and Governor Ribaldequin, the progressive who wanted Deralia to be a "model world" without primitive, tiresome "traditions" and, thus, an unremarkable (but profitable) world among many unremarkable worlds. But Thesh, too, saw opportunity in this clash of ideas. Ribaldequin himself was not of much interest to Thesh, but his superior, Moff Levi, did interest him. The Moff had attempted to crack down on Thesh's infrastructure on Chuzalla, elsewhere in the Sector, and had recently announced more troops and ships to assure that this attempt would, in fact, succeed. But Thesh wasn't entirely convinced that he couldn't come to an understanding with the notoriously pragmatic Levi or with his subordinate Governor of Chuzalla; a working relationship, if you will, that would let Thesh and his pirates continue to operate in the Sector unmolested. But Deralius (or, more specifically, those loyal to him) were also interested in Moff Levi. They knew that their troubles with Governor Ribaldequin wouldn't end with Ribaldequin, for even if the Governor was done away with, Levi would send someone else―possibly someone worse―to replace him. It had been suggested to Thesh that the Deralians might be a useful friend to him and his pirates, if they continued to plague the sector in a manner that could embarrass Levi. Thesh, thus, had a choice to make. It was Levi or the Deralians, and each option had sacrifices to make with it; if he sided with Levi, Thesh would need to operate less conspicuously on Chuzalla and throughout the sector, and if he befriended the Deralians, he would need to stop running guns to the militant minority on Deralia's moon that was opposed to the King's rule. It was precisely one of these lucrative gun running trips that had brought him to Deralia today, along with his ship, the Bloodlust (a VCX-700 heavy courier, modified to include a dorsal ion cannon, a magnetic grappler, and various countermeasures), and the Chuzalla (a Wayfarer-class transport with a Cloakshape fighter it used as a scout on missions like these, and which now sped around the periphery of the formation). The duo of ships had been in a high orbit over Deralia, having just departed its moon and rounded the planet on their way to Chuzalla when the proximity sensor beeped in the cockpit of the Bloodlust. "Well, what have we here?" Thesh mused as he brought up the identification of Shiva's ship, "What are you doing way out here, all by your lonesome?" The Weequay liked being out on the prowl again; deciding whether or not to loot a lone freighter was a much easier decision than the ones he'd been faced with lately. "Are you talking to me, Thesh?" said the massive Herglic awkwardly seated next to him. "Fire up the magnetic grappler," Thesh said to him, ignoring his question, "Be ready to reel this one in." The Herglic nodded and went about the controls, while Thesh switched on his headset and told the gunners on both ships to stand by―particularly the Bloodlust's ion cannon. "Are you talking to me?" the Herglic asked again. "No. Now shut up, Lawrence, I'm opening a channel here." Thesh hailed Shiva's freighter from a distance, although the formation fast approached it with the Cloakshape fighter assuming a long, oblique course that would eventually bring it around the rear of the ship. "Unidentified ship," Thesh said, "Are you in need of assistance?"

| Jenson Timmons, Shiva's primary man on the vessel, gave the viewscreen a worried glance as the ships came his way. He was quite outgunned in this case, which was a bad idea. Running was out of the question so it seemed the only course of action was to continue onwards with the mission and hope for the best. He called out to his gunners to be ready hands if all hell broke loose, while the pilot beside him armed, but did not lock a solution, for the proton torpedoes. "This is Jenson Timmons, captain of the Lola, bearing a cargo of scientists for Deralia to speak with His Majesty and, by association, Governor Augustus. We thank you for your offer of assistance at this time, but all systems are in the green." The pilot made to alter his course away from the oncoming vessels but Timmons shook his head. "If we are unwelcome, we blow through hard and fast and make a run for the other side." One of the double laser cannon turrets was slowly rotating to keep the Cloakshape in full view.

| "'Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl,'" Thesh muttered to himself the lyrics of an old, but enduringly-popular song as the Bloodlust and the Chuzalla came within firing range of the Lola. The Weequay watched his sensor readings closely as it showed the Lola's weapons systems being armed one after another in succession, and one of its turrets keeping a close watch on his Cloakshape fighter. This one had some fight in it, Thesh decided. Good. Since he had already decided to hit the ship, Thesh only half-listened to Timmons over the comm, but he did happen to hear the bit about scientists bound for King Deralius and Governor Ribaldequin, both. He knew he had to choose sides between these two men eventually, and this, he thought, might be the perfect opportunity to do so; with hostages in his possession, he could contact both the King and the Governor and see how willing each of them were to deal with him. Perhaps, he thought, he could even demand an audience with Moff Levi. Time would tell―but first, the fireworks. Before Timmons had quite finished speaking, the Bloodlust opened fire on the Lola with its laser cannons in order to soften up its shields, then, a moment later, opened up with its ion cannons, too. Expecting the ship to gun its engines and run, Thesh instructed his gunners to fire at the Lola's current position and also a few meters in front of the ship's bow. This all but guaranteed that some of the fire would connect with its target, even if it tried to make a sharp turn up, down, or to either side. Indeed, only flying backward would allow the Lola to escape the barrage unscathed, and Thesh knew that was beyond the ability of a YZ-775. "It's all you, Blood 1," Thesh said over his comm to the Cloakshape fighter, which would now be acquiring a concussion missile targeting solution on the Lola's bank of three big engines. "Mind those turrets," he cautioned, as he pulled back on the Bloodlust's yoke and sent it into a steep climb―Thesh knew the Lola had armed its proton torpedoes, and he wanted to make sure that, if fired at him, the torpedoes would be to the rear of the Bloodlust, whereupon he could use the ship's chaff if need be. At the same time, he didn't want to be too far away from the Lola, and he made sure not to put in too much distance. The Chuzalla, meanwhile, remained at a greater distance, ready to cut off the Lola if it tried to run the way they'd come. It was the smartest move for the Wayfarer-class transport, since it sported fewer weapons than the Bloodlust and wasn't as fast as the Lola. Well, not as fast as the Lola with all of her engines intact. We'll just have to see to that, Thesh thought.

| The Lola rocked as it was bracketed by the Bloodlust's cannons. True to Thesh's expectations, the vessel surged forwards and down, relative to the attacking pirate vessel; broadcasting an emergency alert to any within range a moment later. The first of the double laser cannons turrets that was tracking the Cloakshape spat fire as the other swung to engage the smaller ship as well. The double turbolaser turret; the Lola's heaviest weapon, engaged the Bloodlust as it climbed, snapping off shots. Inside the cockpit, Timmons swore as he saw the shield readout, down to sixty-five percent. "Get me a lock on that Wayfarer. Fire an eight-spread on my mark. Take us in to the planet and if that ship gets in the way... ram it." The pilot gave him a startled look and Timmons slapped the back of the man's helmet. "It's a damned ruse, man! They'll flinch! If you don't go, we're all dead!"

| If any of the crew of the Lola had doubted the wisdom of dropping out of hyperspace alone far, far above the planet, his or her doubt would be vindicated now that the ship found itself quite some distance from the nearest Deralian authorities. The Lola had apparently decided, wisely, that it was on its own, and as Thesh anticipated, it was putting up a fight. 'Blood 1,' the Cloakshape fighter some distance behind the Lola's position, had the momentary advantage over its prey; it was firing in a direct line, while the Lola had made a sudden dive, complicating things for its gunners. Under the circumstances, Blood 1 could juke, roll, and pitch from side to side enough to avoid the spattering of fire in its direction without losing its line of fire on the target. With the targeting lock acquired, the fighter loosed a pair of concussion missiles at the Lola (one after another, so the old trick of "bottlenecking" multiple missiles couldn't be pulled here in the unlikely event a ship full of scientists could manage such a feat). In a decade of relative peace, it was usually people like Thesh and his pirates who had an uncommon abundance of combat experience. Thesh, in particular, was renowned as a good pilot as well a pirate. Even his foes conceded "that ugly, shriveled, brown bastard knows how to fly." He eased the Bloodlust's acceleration and came about, coming as close to a Herbst maneuver as one could manage in little to no gravity--most of the Lola's fire would miss broadly ahead of the Bloodlust as it dipped down into a new angle of attack that would pursue the Lola from above and behind. As he readied his ion cannons for a strafing run on the Lola, Thesh continued to be concerned about its proton torpedoes; still, he'd seen a lot of modified YZ-775's, some of them that fired torpedoes forward, some of them to port and starboard, but he'd never seen one that could fire its missiles backwards. The laser cannons were another matter, of course, especially now that Blood 1 had broken off its pursuit and set a course to cover the Chuzalla, but Thesh knew his ship well and knew that its shield could withstand more punishment from those lasers than the Lola could stand from his ion cannons. Once Thesh made up the distance between them and the two ships were within range of each other (assuming that the Lola held its current course—and it was running, so why wouldn't it?), and if it did indeed come to a shooting match, the Bloodlust would prevail. "Bogey's coming right at us, boss," the captain of the Chuzalla said calmly to Thesh over his comm, "I'm getting out of the way, if you've got this." "I do," Thesh said, "but hang in there for a moment. I need him to hold this course, and if he wants a game of chicken with you then that's fine for me. Just be sure you're out of the way before he takes some paint off your hull." The Chuzalla signaled in the affirmative, and made a point of firing glancing blows from its laser cannon and quad laser cannon at the approaching Lola, not to do any real damage, but rather to put some more strain on its shields. Moreover, Blood 1's concussion missiles should have been nearing their mark at about this moment.

| The scientists on board had been hired by Timmons, who answered to Phen Varak; Shiva's primary go-to man. Timmons himself did not know for whom he truly worked and as such, could hardly call to Shiva for help. Such was the case of operating in cells as Shiva's underlings did, for the most part. For now, it was up to Timmons to get the recruited scientists and pair of mercenary gunmen to some semblance of safety, as it were. The gunners manning the laser cannons switched their aim once the Cloakshape fired its warheads; the speed of the warheads and the target change foiled the gunners plans in full though. The rearward missile disappeared in a flash of light from a lucky hit, but the second struck directly on the rear shields just behind the middle engine. The Lola rocked, the shields dropping to forty-five percent, but the engines still hummed their song, propelling the craft. The pilot juked the craft as best he could to avoid the incoming fire from the Wayfarer, but it was to little effect as it splattered upon the forward shields. Inside, Timmons ordered all guns forward and to open fire on the craft blocking their path. The laser cannons and the dual turbolaser opened up, aiming to make the other captain flinch.

| And flinch he did. The captain of the Chuzalla having no desire to lose his life or his ship to a bunch of suicidal scientists, he wisely moved aside. By then, however, the Bloodlust had made up the distance to the Lola and unleashed a devastating salvo upon it from behind and above. A pair of concussion missiles, as well as laser cannons and, more importantly, ion cannons opened up on the Lola, sure to diminish or disable its shields (which, one would think—between Thesh's first shots, a concussion missile impact, and the Chuzalla's glancing shots—would be rather below 45% strength). The Chuzalla wasn't finished, however. It had listed to starboard in order to keep out of the Lola's path, but, at Thesh's instruction, acquired a tractor lock on the unsuspecting ship as it passed. A Wayfarer-class transport, of course, didn't ordinarily have a tractor beam, but the Chuzalla acted as a carrier, and a tractor beam was a logical piece of hardware to install in order to help guide the Cloakshape fighters into its tight hangar. The tractor beam wasn't designed as a weapon, however—that's what the magnetic grappler on the Bloodlust was for. Nor could the Chuzalla, which was comparable in size to the Lola, have any hope of moving the other ship about with its tractor beam. But it was enough to slow it down dramatically, but, as it happened, only for a moment; comparably-sized or not, the Lola's tremendous speed (that is, its kinetic energy) relative to the more-or-less stationary Chuzalla was far more than the Chuzalla's puny tractor beam could handle. It wasn't sheered off, as one might imagine, but rather fried in a shower of sparks as it simply became overloaded. By then, however, both the Chuzalla and the Lola would have shuddered violently and, more importantly, the Lola's speed would have been significantly diminished. The Chuzalla limped away as Thesh's barrage from the Bloodlust would be about to connect with the Lola. The ship was about to be out of commission, or it was about to escape; either way, this skirmish was about to end, but Blood 1 was playing catch-up to the Lola and the Bloodlust nonetheless, just in case it would be needed.

| The tractor beam was actually rather unnecessary and redundant, but it did serve its purpose. The final pair of concussion missiles did more than take the shields down; one of the engine mounts was knocked askew in its housing, rendering it unusable and creating a rather dangerous situation or those on board, had the pilot not cut off all energy. It was a moot point though as the Bloodlust's laser cannons stitched the Lola's rear as well, creating further damage. The ion cannons were the knockout punch though, and the ship went dark under the initial barrage; its momentum stopped and then its ballistic trajectory greatly slowed by the tractor beam. The vessel still followed its last course, albeit much slower and quite powered down. Inside, Timmons continued to swear before turning to the pilot. "Let's get this tub operational, or at least get us some communications up so we can call for help. If they board us, we're all going to have a bad day." The panicked questions of the scientists in the rear were floating up to him, and he headed back to try and calm them.

| The Lola, now a rather easy target, took another spattering of ion cannon fire, then another as Thesh, in the Bloodlust, strafed it a couple more times for good measure. The Chuzalla had caught up, too, and so had Blood 1, which flew interference in case the Deralians got their act together and managed to get their ships on site. It was more probable, though, that Thesh would have no problems latching onto the Lola with his magnetic grappler and maneuvering it—albeit in a cumbersome fashion—even farther from the planet with the Chuzalla close behind. Assuming there wasn't much that the Lola and its crew could do, Thesh would prepare to jump to hyperspace.

| There was, as such, very little the Lola could do. With the men onboard rushing to the limited arms lockers and arming themselves; donning gear and the like, Thesh would be easily able to grapple the craft and take it to hyperspace. Those on the vessel would have no choice but to hope to bargain with the pirate.
