| Dinner for Three
Kylantha ran her fingers through her long golden locks as she stared at herself in a hallway mirror. She had gone back and forth on whether or not she could wear the formal make-up that all Queens of Naboo wore or to just go natural this evening. She had decieded to go natural, while this was a meeting about state affairs, it was still a dinner with two 'friends'. She wore a bright ube colored silk gown that pooled around her feet, the back was almost completely open but the front was high and came up almost to her neck, the fabric gathered into a scoop neck. Her hair was down in soft waves this evening little jewels dotted the field of gold, and sparkled in the artifical lighting. She did wear one of her smaller tiaras, that was more of a headband than anything else, holding her hair back from her face.
She had spent a lot of time thinking about this dinner, about which room within the palace would be the best for this meeting. She did not wish to make it too formal so she had nixed the formal dining room, that would have swallowed the three, almost immediately. But then she had a huge problem, where could the three of them meet in a formal yet informal setting. It had been a beautiful day that was promising to turn into a lovely evening. It wasn't until just recently she informed the staff that the dinner would be out on one of the balconies of the palace.
Kyla walked out onto the balcony, looking over everything that had been set up out there. It was one of the larger balconies that overlooked the city of Theed, which was painted in beautiful hues of blue and purple. The air was nice, not cold but not hot, the perfect middle ground that seemed to reenergize you. She took in a deep breath and would just smile. Everything perfect, of course it was, her people were excellent and knew what her vision had been. There was a small round table set up at the center of the balcony, a lovely silver table cloth draped over it, black and lavander chargers sat at each place setting, with fine crystal glasses and silverware in there proper places. A beautiful pink and purple buganvilla grew along the railing, filling it in with the beautiful colors, some of her favorites actually. Kyla would remain out there until her guests arrived, the staff of the palace knew to escort the two men up there for there little dinner party.

| First through the air between Fort Spearhead and Theed, and then the streets of Theed itself, a Light Assault Vehicle/repulsorlift QH-7 Chariot sped along, flanked on both sides by five 74-Z Speeder Bikes, each rider being a member of his Headquarters' security detail. It was a trip without incident, and while riding General Aurelius took the time to read over the dossiers on Queen Kylantha and Governor Mercutio one more time. Kylantha had ruled for eight years thus far, and had had a rather uneventful reign thus far, other than finally breaking Naboo's infatuation with electing children as their monarchs. She was loyal to the Empire, and a model Imperial citizen and head of state in every way, outwardly. The only concerns listed were lack of any change within the Naboo government; due to lack of reform, it required the Empire put in place a Military Governor, who acted in the function of a typical Imperial Military Governor most worlds had, but was also the commander of the planetary garrison. It was an odd situation however, as his duties as Governor could not overstep the civilian Governor unless considered absolutely necessary... even then he needed Ruling Council approval, unless the world was in crisis. The Governor was a man in the same spirit as Sio Bibble, the only difference being he was more aggressive, from what he had observed thus far. His file was shockingly light, which concerned him. He would have to get a hold of the ISB soon to have a new file done, if they weren't already working on it.
As he finished his reading, the transport stopped, and shortly after the door was opened from the outside. He walked out and looked at the Theed Royal Palace; it was the first time he had been able to lay eyes on it, and it was more beautiful than he imagined. Theed, and especially the palace itself, exemplified the Naboo culture. After taking a moment, he walked forward and presented himself to the guard, who then led him into the Palace. Upon entering, he removed his cap, and held it on his left side as he strode through the halls with a unique step, it was militaristic in nature, but extremely precise with every step seeming to be calculated and his general stride being purposed and intentional. If one were to measure his steps, they would find that each one was the same exact distance, every time.
Even though his stare, nor his eyes even, strayed from looking straight ahead, he was observing the art throughout the palace. It certainly showed the Naboo were a peaceful, pacifistic people, almost to a weakness. It helped him understand why the conscription debate always ended the way it did, it was an issue with the Naboo at a cultural level. After a few moments, before he could truly analyze what he had seen thus far, he found himself out on the selected balcony. Before doing anything, he walked to the Queen, and gave a bow from his waist, and proceeded to raise himself to introduce himself. "Your Royal Highness, I am Brigadier General Maximus Aurelius of the His Majesty's Imperial Army. It is an honor to finally meet you in person." he said in as smooth a voice he could manage, which was rather hard considering his voice was low and gravelly. While he maintained his disciplined military stance, it was outwardly noticeable that he was in a friendly mood.Added (19 Sep 2011, 10:16 PM) --------------------------------------------- *bump* Added (10 Dec 2011, 10:05 PM) --------------------------------------------- *bumpity bumpity bump bump bump AND post. Opah!*
He took a seat at the table, observing, now in a much more relaxed stance, the scenery that the Queen seemed to still be taking in. It was a beautiful country, and he could see why the Naboo strove so vehemently to avoid war. Then again, he came from a warrior people, and his world also had plenty of beauty. "As I believe I told you before in our correspondence, you have an absolutely beautiful world here, and I want you to know... it is in good hands." he said to her, getting himself adjusted in the seat. After some time of silence had passed, the General, looking slightly uncomfortable, and beginning to have his friendliness fade into unpleasantness, spoke once more. "It appears the Governor, is running late."

| Kylantha would smile to the General as he greeted her, she would normally take a more informal stance with her guest but this guest was not completely welcome here, though she would hide her displeasure of Naboo being occupied by men who did not understand her culture or ways. As he bowed she would just smile and gave a gracious nod of her head, “It is a pleasure to meet you General, please do take a seat.” She would motion to the table that was set for three, though she did wonder where her Governor was at, this was very out of character for the man. She would move to sit down as a servant pulled out the seat for her, she would smooth out the back of her gown before sitting completely.
Kyla’s mind had drifted off to many different places within the few minutes of silence, which she was sorry for, she had a guest sitting before her, a stranger to Naboo. She would glance to him for a moment, with a small smile, “It appears that way, which is highly unusual for him, I am sure there is a good cause for him being late.” She was sweet and pleasant, but there was a strength that could be seen in her eyes at times, that said she actually cared for the people of Naboo, even if she was placed in power by the Emperor to be a puppet ruler.
Kyla needed to come up with something quick, and after all she was still a woman, “I know you are a military man General, but do you enjoy dancing?”

| There was a good cause, if an unusual one, for Mercutio's tardiness. Naturally, once inside the Royal Palace, he surrendered himself to its customs; he had come directly to the Palace from a meeting with the spice miners' union and had a datapad in hand—it would have been rude to enter an audience with the Queen with it in tow, but there wasn't an aide at hand to take it from him. So he waited outside the dining room, frustrated at first, but soon losing himself in the rare quiet of the moment, something he'd not had much of in his first days as Governor. Among the marble columns of the corridor outside the dining room, alone with only a duo of ceremonial guards that he was accustomed to ignoring, he cleared his mind of the many things he'd done today (and had yet to do). Cultivating the support of the spice miners for a much needed tariff would be a time consuming process, but for now this dinner needed his complete focus.
It was, indeed, an important occasion. General Relius had assured Kylantha that Naboo was "in good hands," and while indeed this was true, Mercutio intended to remind the General that those hands were Mercutio's and Kylantha's, not his. Mercutio and the Queen were of similar mind on Relius's presence here on Naboo—the planet was quite capable of managing itself, and the presence of Imperial troops on the planet would only provoke the Gungans and exacerbate the insurgency. Moreover, Kylantha was quite aware of the fact that the last time Imperial troops had landed on Naboo, it had resulted in the assassination of her predecessor, Queen Apailana. (They weren't allowed to call it what it was, of course. But everyone knew that the Empire was responsible for the Queen's death).
One of the Queen's handmaidens finally relieved Mercutio of his datapad. He thanked her, perhaps a bit too informally, and then assumed his regal (and practiced) bearing as the handmaiden escorted him through the dining room, onto the balcony, and announced his presence. He bowed his head to Kylantha, as was the custom, then approached her cordially—if somewhat apologetically. "A pleasure to see you again, Your Majesty," he said, disregarding Relius. "I'm sorry that I was detained, but it was in service to your realm, I assure you." Despite Mercutio's reputation as a socialite (and something of a playboy in earlier years), everyone knew that he worked hard, too. Most likely, his excuse would be accepted. He turned to General Relius and extended his hand across the table. "Good evening, General. It's good that we should meet at last," he 'said'.
"I hope I didn't interrupt," he said tentatively, as he assumed a seat. It was prudent of Kylantha to have chosen a round table—it avoided any dispute over who sat where and what it might say about who had power and precedent. There was no 'head' of this table; the three of them would dine as peers. A nice touch, Mercutio noted to himself, though a part of him lamented that the setup wouldn't lend itself as well to an assertion of his authority over General Relius. He took a moment to assess the man; spartan in appearance, as expected. Closely resembling an actor whose name Mercutio couldn't quite remember. He decided that there was a tragic quality to this man; someone who had pretensions to nobility and who felt, perhaps, that his choice of career led many to underestimate him when, in fact, they estimated him correctly and the misestimation was entirely his.
Time would tell if Mercutio was right. He looked to Queen Kylantha, deferring to her to resume the conversation.Added (20 Dec 2011, 6:33 PM) --------------------------------------------- (Updated)

| As she asked him about dancing, it had occurred to him that the Queen was not wearing the formal make-up that was traditional of Naboo royalty. He found this an interesting touch, as well as the tradition itself. Many had accused the Deralian royalty of the over-the-top, swaggering and cocksure displays of its military prowess and overall dominance. Some would say their downfall would be a hard one, and one that only their pride could bring about; but that was a story for another time. While Maximus was an embodiment of the Deralian swagger and cockiness, he was at the same time humble, if there was any more of a contradiction. He held himself to a certain display, one he felt was necessary as Crown Prince, but he was more than willing to accept that he had faults, and that he could make mistakes. He was not above admitting either as well, that is when they displayed themselves or occurred, respectively.
It was perhaps the outward display that led to Mercutio's assesment of him. It was perhaps this known "Deralian nature" which led to the stiff resistance to his own governorship. It was true, he did not know or understand the ways of the Naboo. They were odd, nowhere near what a monarchy should have been in his eyes, and appeared weak. However, with that, he sought to understand and learn. It was on that note, that he was cordial and courteous with both Kylantha and Mercutio at all times, as well as a diplomatic one. It was a slight break in his stance thus far, when he smiled at the Queen's question. "You're majesty, I am a military officer, but I am also a human being. I do, indeed enjoy dance; although..." he began to say, before being cut off by the Governor's entrance. Part of him was disappointed at the arrival, as he was hoping to spend some time to get to know the Queen alone. Now began, what would most likely be a proverbial dance on the table at which they sat, in which the Queen would balance between satisfying her Governor and the Empire's.
He rose when Mercutio entered, and any hint of him loosening up faded, with a snap to perfect point of attention posture. It was not out of deference to Mercutio, but merely as a gesture of formal respect. Once the Queen had spoken to the Governor, and he had addressed him, he would shake the man's offered hand, "Good evening, Governor. It is a pleasure to meet you, finally." It hadn't been that long, only a couple of weeks since he had arrived, but a dreadfully long time, in his eyes at least, for counterparts to go without meeting one another.

| Kylantha would listen to Aurelius speak, with a pleasant look upon her face, though he was cut short by the arrival of Mercutio, she wished to know more about the man personally, he peaked her interest, even if it was only to keep ‘her’ planet safe and out of harm’s way once again.
She would glance towards Mercutio, offering him a small smile and a nod of her head, she would remain seated though, her bright blue eyes glazing over for a moment as she lost herself to thought only to be brought back by his voice. “I’m pleased you have arrived in one piece Governor, I was just assuring our guest that your tardiness was highly unusually and must have good cause, which we may speak of later.” She would offer him a smile though the tone of her voice and her eyes, those deep ocean blue orbs promised that there would be a discussion between them later in the evening once the General had retired for the evening.
Kyla knew better than anyone that this was not the time to let ones guard down, to allow anything to slip by unnoticed. Mistakes would be made but must be rectified immediately in order to keep the delicate balance that she perceived not only in the room or her planet, but in the galaxy as a whole.
Kyla did noticed however that a certain tenseness had returned to the room, Aurelius’ body language had changed completely with the entrance of the Governor. She already knew this was going to be a very enjoyable evening with her playing mediator between the two men. “I was just asking the General if he enjoyed dancing with the hopes that he would honor us at the Annual Festival to Shiraya.” She would turn to Aurelius for a moment “It would be a lovely opportunity for you to learn more about Naboo’s history, culture, and traditions.” She was attempting to stay away from any real business topics, allowing the Governor to sour the mood of the evening with them.

| Mercutio couldn't always be depended on to sour the mood with the introduction of politics into otherwise pleasant conversations. He was a good Governor but also a good socialite, and in traditional Naboo fashion it hadn't been his politics alone that had endeared him to Theed's (predominantly female) aristocracy. Part politician, part social climber, he was known as much for his wit and his weakness for women and wine than for, say, his trade or immigration policies. If the Queen thought him a bit dour, it was probably because he'd spent considerable time in his campaign for Governor presenting himself, first and foremost, as an able public servant. And he was, but Kylantha knew there was more to him than that.
She was right though, to a point. Mercutio couldn't relax with General Relius present; the General was as anathema to Mercutio as Deralia was to Naboo. Deralia, a world of dunces and spartans. Naboo, a world of philosophers and pacifists. Mercutio was proud to fit the stereotype of his world. Time would tell if General Relius fit his, but it didn't matter—the Empire didn't belong here, and no one believed that Relius and his legion were only here to fight the Gungans. His presence on this planet, his presence in this room, was a message from the Empire; "We killed one Queen and we'll kill another one too."
Mercutio began to reach instinctively for his glass of wine but resisted, remembering that drinks hadn't yet been served. "That would be splendid, wouldn't it?" he agreed with Kylantha, "I think the General would benefit from a better grasp of our culture," he added, glancing from Kylantha to Relius. "As would the Empire."Added (10 Feb 2012, 7:14 PM) --------------------------------------------- Tum tee tum. ))

| He was the last to sit back down, and listened to both of them speak. He had loosened slightly, upon sitting, but nowhere near the looseness the Queen had witnessed mere moments ago. As much as Queen Kylantha was noticing his tenseness, so was General Aurelius noticing Governor Mercutio's. It was odd, however, their pairing. The two men, arguably, could be considered two sides of the same coin. Prince Maximus, as he was more renowned as on his homeworld, was considered the more social and political of his siblings. Prince Tiberius prefered to gravitate towards the military, while Princess Aula was noticeably absent, although much the socialite herself, she was busy on Imperial Center with her career as a fashion designer, being one of the few left popularizing the Republic Classic era style.
Like Mercutio, he loved women, and had been known as a womanizer all his life until settling down when he met his wife, Sexta, a fellow Deralian noble, while at the Republic Military Academy on Raithal. He was well known for his reformist and progressive policy propositions. He also had a great love for wine. He was a student of history and culture, wanting to as much bring in positive aspects of other cultures into Deralian life, as much as he felt to defeat an enemy, one must know an enemy; it was always impossible to tell which thought process he was in when learning of another culture and history.
Much to what would be Mercutio's surprise, his only reason for being here was to, in fact, put down the Gungan rebellion. A very misguided insurrection built upon half-truths and lies, but an insurrection against the Emperor nonetheless, and on his homeworld of all places.Whether or not that mission would be expanded, or a move against Queen Kylantha's government would be ordered, he could not say, simply because, he did not know. If a message was being sent, he was unaware of it. He was simply following his orders, and carrying out his duty. If Mercutio wanted to see more than that in his presence, he could not stop him.
"As I was saying, I do enjoy dancing, however, I have not done so since my wedding, ten years ago. I'm afraid I might embarrass myself if I do any dancing now. Of course, that thought changes, depending on how much wine I consume!" he said, in a moment of candor. It was a moment that he mentally berated himself, despite the show of a smile. After an moment, he turned to Mercutio. "I know, it may surprise you, but I agree, Governor. I need a good grasp on your people, should I be able to serve side-by-side with you in an efficient manner. I believe, also, the Empire could use an more intimate understanding of the Naboo, as it could of all of its cultures." he said. It was no secret anymore, the clashes that had been occurring between his homeworld and their sector government, despite being the most loyal world in the sector, and the biggest contributor to the Empire aside from Rothana in the region; his comments were likely veiled reference to this.

| Kyla knew how important this meeting was, how tensions were high even though everyone at the table attempted to seem relaxed to the others. In a way Kyla was relaxed. She knew what had happened to the previous queen and infact she had been installed as a puppet ruler by the Empire to keep Naboo reigned in, a fact that not many knew one that she attempted to keep as a secret. She knew all too well that the position of Naboo in the Empire was precarious at the moment and they could not afford to make any enemies.
A smile would touch her lips as the General agreed with both herself and the governor about him and the empire needing to learn more about the people and culture of Naboo. “Well then it is settled you will be my guest at the upcoming festival, I do hope you will save one dance for me though.” She would give him an easy smile that seemed to hint at something more. Kyla was after all a woman, a woman who knew how to use smiles and innuendo to her advantage.
A handmaiden would pour them each a drink, starting with the Queen first, then their guest and then the Governor.

| ((I'm skipping you Mercutio... because I can! I know it's short, but I didn't want to get too ahead of myself with skipping Mercutio.))
It was, perhaps, chance that lead to his selection as Military Governor of Naboo. This was unlikely with the Empire, and indeed not the case. General Aurelius was selected for his placement as Military Governor due to his loyalty. Deralians were bred with loyalty seemingly in their veins, for they had always remained loyal, with a few rare examples, to the galactic government; they were also known for a wide cultural practice of marrying for life. Even in divorce, a Deralian rarely sought out a new mate. In this case, Aurelius was happily married, and loyal to his wife. The Queen's attempts to use her traits as a woman against him would simply not work, leaving him clear headed, but respectful, in dealing with the Naboo. There was, again, always a rare exception, and some could say the current royal family was quite the exception.
"I would be honored to attend the festival as your gust, your Highness. I will save a dance for you, although as I said, it has been many years since I have done so," he said, taking a sip of the beverage that was served, quietly wondering what it might have been. "So, please tell me more of this festival."

| "Forgive me for interrupting," Mercutio said demurely. He'd watched and listened to the two of them as he enjoyed a sip of his drink. Kylantha, following as she did a duo of popular Queens—Amidala and Apailana—was often seen as a staid and steady monarch, but Mercutio knew better. Steady, yes, but Theed's political class underestimated Kylantha's statesmanlike qualities. Or stateswomanlike, he supposed. She could navigate a politically-sensitive conversation as only a Gungan could navigate the planet's core. Mercutio admired her for it, but even though he suspected her casual air with Relius was meant to lower the General's defenses, he still didn't like it; the Queen seemed far too comfortable with this Deralian butcher sent to spill blood on their planet. Whom was lowering whose defenses?
"Tell me, General," he said, "When do you expect victory in the swamps? And what is victory, my good man? Do you measure it in dead Gungans?" It wasn't Mercutio's most politic moment, he would freely admit.

| Kyla would look to Mercutio with a kind smile, as she lifted her glass to her lips to take a sip but almost choking on it as he spoke. Oh by the goddess someone help her keep this civil. She would shoot Mercutio a look, “Governor let us have a civil conversation” she would glance to General giving him a reassuring smile, her mind racing on how to properly word Mercutio’s snide question. She would get him for this later, when they had time to speak in private after the general left. “I am sure that Governor Mercutio meant nothing by his remarks, he is just curious as am I on how long you are planning on battling with the Gungans and how will you know when victory is yours?”

| When Mercutio spoke, he snapped his head to stare at him. For a very brief moment, almost unnoticeable, he gave a stare similar to one he would give to an undisciplined recruit; it was a stare that evoked fear in some of the most seasoned Imperial troops. However, despite this very brief lapse, which was due to the General being caught off-guard by Mercutio's interruption, did not last and was atypical of the otherwise reserved and calm General. His stare quickly shifted in one of wonder at what Mercutio was about to say, which was accompanied by a cocked brow.
It seemed that taking a sip of their drink was a becoming something of a nerveous tick for all three of them; whether or not it was calculated or subconscious was opent to debate, or it could even be just coincidence. Either way, he did find it ironic that as he was considering this in preparation for answering Mercutio that he took a sip from his own glass again.
"The when is yet to be determined; that depends on how long the Gungans under this General Tenko clings to their delusions that they are oppressed. The what is, however, very solid and clear; when the Gungans either surrender without incident or lose their capability to wage war against Naboo and her people. And no, I do not measure it in dead Gungans. I wish for no loss of life, and since that is not possible, the most minimal loss of life. Unfortunately, the Gungan rebels seem dedicated to killing as many they possible can until the assured demise of their campaign; I hope to convince them otherwise."Added (30 Sep 2012, 9:19 PM) --------------------------------------------- ((Bump))

| (( I hadn't realized it was my post here. It technically isn't, but it pretty much is, as I see now. I'll have a post up here tomorrow morning. )) Added (01 Oct 2012, 9:57 AM) --------------------------------------------- Mercutio was undeterred by Relius's steely glare. The Governor sat his drink down and clasped his hands together on the table before him. "I wasn't aware of a Gungan war on the Naboo," he said, skeptically. "If we're to believe the Gungans, their war is with the Empire, not the Naboo. In fact, until your forces arrived here, General, this so-called Gungan 'resistance' was no more a pest to Naboo than petty vandals. If your interest is in the 'minimum loss of life,' as you say, you might educate yourself on the fact that there was no loss of life prior to the Empire's 'surge' here."
He scooped up his drink and leaned back in his chair. Mercutio was a cool customer, but it'd be a mistake to think he was cool on the inside—not on matters of life and death. Beneath his casual demeanor and his snide comments was a deep and abiding commitment to what he stood for, and disdain for what Relius stood for. "Speaking of," he said, nonchalantly, "What of these rumors from the swamps of your forces starving an entire Gungan city?" An admonishing glare from Kylantha, no doubt, but Mercutio kept his eyes on Relius. "I don't put much stock in rumors, of course, but I have received complaints from Naboo traders who have been turned away by your forces on the road to Otoh Teers. One hopes it's only livelihoods, and not lives, in danger here. But surely, in either case, you must have a good reason for this purported blockade of Otoh Teers?"
"Her Majesty will forgive me for pressing the point," Mercutio added, bowing his head to her before looking back to Relius, "but as the Governor, Gungan cities are as much my responsibility as Naboo ones. Since unification, that is." Added (05 Nov 2012, 7:55 PM) --------------------------------------------- "Hmm?" Added (30 Nov 2012, 1:10 PM) --------------------------------------------- "Hmm?"
