Another Cronese man was hanged after being accused of poisoning the river after one of his Nerfs was found dead upriver lying in the stream and several people in the village got severe stomach bugs.

The Ethnic Cronese were not completely mindless of their fate and so had spent some time forming small militias in the larger settlements. They began to fence off their properties and guard them against the threat of the barbarians. One evening Lord Gilbert of the largest Cronese town (Dunholm) decided that it was time to strike back. A small Embarilite village slept some miles away from his own village. They were of the small Clan Airlie who had few arms or warriors, mostly being composed of old men.

Lord Gilbert lead his men to their village with his men under arms. They walked into the small mead hall of the village and offered greetings. They accepted the kindness and pledged that the next morning when they returned to their homes they would do so as Embarilite warriors, making as if they were to pledge their loyalty to the Clan Airlie.

Lord Airlie was away, but his wife gladly accepted the kindness of the men and her young son who was master of the hall in his father's absence bid them sit and drink with his warriors and people. And they drank, but the Ethnic Cronese vastly less than the Embarilites, who drank themselves into a stupour after eating a meal of chunks of roast meat.

So it was that the warriors of Airlie were slothful and drunk when the men of Dunholm took up their weapons and began their butchery. Blaster rounds flew and most of the men were quickly slaughtered by the Ethnic Cronese who took relish in drawing out the deaths of the Embarilite warriors, repaying doubly the men lost some weeks ago by the Cronese.

Young Master Airlie died a particularly painful death, crufied to the door of his father's drinking hall upside down then sawed in twain by baying Ethnic Cronese. His mother and the prettier women suffered a worse fate before their deaths took them. The weapons of the warriors were taken from the filthy houses of the Embarilites and loaded on a cart to be taken back to Dunholm's sturdy Duracrete walls. They then set fire to the thatch.

Of the two hundred souls at Airlie, less than 30 survived what became known as the Airlie Massacre.
