Another Flight of Fancy for Sluis Van
First the expense of tens of millions of credits to refurbish the thousands-year-old Hammerhead-class cruiser design to act as the flagship of Sluis Van's fleet, and now another strange flight of fancy for the Outer Rim starship designer; the refurbishment of the Trade Federation's C-9979 landing ship at the request of the planet Acherin. The C-9979 became renowned as a tool of conquest for the Trade Federation and later the Confederacy of Independent Systems—symbolism that Acherin is keen to resurrect with Sluis Van as its willing accomplice in the queer endeavor.
"It's strange enough that Sluis Van uses as a symbol of its innovative prowess a ship that is thousands of years out of date," said Logan Tanfelt, an analyst for the Brentaal Trade News, "But why Acherin wants to spend far more of its people's money than it needs to on the refurbishment of another outdated design is beyond me, and revive Separatist imagery in the process. It would be cheaper for Acherin and more profitable for Sluis Van to simply commission a new design."
The 'updated' C-9979 design loses what it is intended for—carrying capacity—and gains in its place faster engines, stronger shields, and a dedicated hyperdrive. "With this design, Acherin will be able to invade planets on the cheap," Tanfelt explained. Whether Acherin, known for its comically bellicose Senator Draken Tu'rot, intends to invade other worlds with this landing ship remains to be seen, but if it does there is no doubt that Sluis Van will be responsible for enabling it to do so and further diminishing its credibility with the costly refurbishment of 'fetish designs' and antiques like the Hammerhead-class and, now, the C-9979.
"It's already difficult to take Acherin seriously," our analyst explained, "And increasingly Sluis Van as well." Imperial Surplus Wins Empress Tetan Contract
Imperial Surplus, Inc. has won out over Chandaar Shipbuilding, a Cronese Mandate-based company, for a contract to provide ships for Empress Teta's new security fleet. Senator Terrawin of Alsakan had urged Empress Teta not to contract with Chandaar Manufacturing because of the Cronese Mandate's controversial former Senator Zarcaine and his government's policies, noting "there are many patriotic and loyal shipyards closer to the Core and... not represented by lying Senators and with a penchant [for] provoking border disputes with their neighbours." Senator volFyr of Empress Teta announced it would be doing business with Imperial Surplus, Inc. instead.
Imperial Surplus was created by the Senate to sell surplus Imperial ships to planets for self defense, including to Empress Teta which has announced it is creating a fleet to deter piracy on a number of important trade routes including the Koros Trunk Line, the Daragon Trail, and the Carbonite Run. Senator volFyr indicated that the decision to contract with Imperial Surplus would "keep down our own cost," but is also seen as a repudiation of the Cronese Mandate's premiere shipwright. Astrogation Museum to Repay Imperial Funds
The Imperial Astrogation Museum, having reported a greater-than-expected profit this quarter, has announced it will repay start-up funds provided by the Empire "as a gesture of gratitude for its support of this worthy endeavor." The museum, located in Brentaal's capital, Cormond, is intended to educate visitors about space travel and its history, and has been praised for its engaging holographic exhibits on the science of hyperspace and the mapping of space lanes. The exhibits "emphasize Brentaal's formative role in these endeavors throughout history," according to the honorable Senator Sir Reuke ur'Tsyne Cambrist.
The museum suffered one setback when Neimoidian students on a field trip sickened dozens of the museum's visitors with a contagious Neimoidian disease. Since then, Neimoidians and other non-Human species have been sequestered to a separate section of the museum where 'virtual tours' are offered.
