| Source: Brentaal Considers Troops to "Leaderless" Sluis Sector
"The Sluis Sector needs firm leadership now," according to a source close to the venerable ruling House Cambrist, who told the Trade News that Brentaal is considering a deployment of troops to the planet Praesitlyn, in the Sluis Sector, where 3 Brentaal nationals and 2 Givin were among 14 miners, merchants, and engineers murdered there last week in what the honorable Senator Sir Reuke ur'Tsyne Cambrist described as a "shameful and anonymous attack."
"[A] heavily-weaponized freighter was permitted to strafe the encampment of miners and merchants on Praesitlyn," Senator Cambrist explained in a statement to the Senate. Patrol ships from Sluis Van were too late to stop the hit-and-run attack that Senator Cambrist referred to as "dastardly." Our source told the Trade News that the lack of leadership from Sluis Van and its "Khedive" Thisst, who claims to govern the Sluis Sector, was to blame.
Brentaal is considering the deployment of another Arquetins-class cruiser to reinforce the Dividual, already at Praesitlyn, and a contingent of soldiers to defend Brentaal's workers on the planet from future incidents, and from persistent racial threats from the Sluissi population on Praesitlyn. The source also tells the Trade News that the government of Acherin has offered to send forces to Praesitlyn, too.
A spokesman for House Cambrist did not deny this, but told reporters that it was "premature to speculate. We must see, first, whether 'Khedive' Thisst steps up to defend the people of Praesitlyn before Brentaal decides it has to." The mining operations on Praesitlyn have been suspended for the time being. The names of the dead won't be released until the families have been notified, but a list of their species and nationalities shows a number of them from Anaxes and Telos IV, and others from Naboo, Chandrila, Alsakan, and others.
Senator Domon of Sluis Van announced that "Khedive" Thisst, the supposed leader of the Sector, was "revamping [his] defensive policies and redistributing defensive craft to ensure this does not occur again." No responsibility was taken for what happened. Brentaal Developing New Military Design
Brentaal is soliciting the participation of the Incom and SoroSuub Corporations, Industrial Automaton, and the local starship designer Brentaal Aeronautics in a top-secret design competition, the Admiralty has confirmed. While not saying what the upcoming design will be, a spokesman for the Admiralty confirmed that it will be a military and law enforcement model and is intended to see widespread use in Brentaal's defense fleet and customs forces. Asked about the secrecy, the spokesman said the Admiralty wanted "to avoid controversy." A source inside the Admiralty told the Trade News that the design was meant "to change the way Brentaal does war."
Incom and SoroSuub have been enticed to join in the bid and contribute original designs with the promise of a large contract of hundreds of the new units or, in the case of Industrial Automaton or Brentaal Aeronautics, contracting with a major manufacturer to have its design produced. "Probably Rothana or Kuat," the spokesman told the Trade News.
The spokesman said that Brentaal would announce the winner in a statement to the Senate either this week or next, once the jury has chosen the best design. What is the "Repletion Project"? Brentaal Trade News Investigates
An anonymous source within the ruling House Cambrist has told the Trade News of the existence of a secretive Brentaal government program known, to those involved, as the "Repletion Project." Other than explaining that the project pertains to Brentaal's perennial over-population, the source told the Trade News only that another government program announced last month, which provides start-up funds and security to new companies established outside of Brentaal—on Praesitlyn, for example—is, in fact, a pilot program for a part of the larger "Repletion Project."
No other source the Trade News consulted appeared to have knowledge of the project. We will continue to investigate and have more in next week's edition. Brentaal Waives Mineral Discount from Anobis
The Commerce Department of Brentaal has announced it is backing down from an earlier demand for a 24% discount on the mineral lanthanide from the planet Anobis, a Givin trade analyist announcing that the Department had "compared the impact of the discount to the cost of lanthanide extraction on Anobis and other operating costs, salaries and benefits for its miners, etc. and determined to a 95% confidence interval these to be mathematically disproportionate." Another official of the Commerce Department told the Trade News that Brentaal "doesn't want this discount to become a burden to Anobis."
Brentaal had been criticized by its trading partners for receiving the 24% discount, which, according to critics, would allow Brentaal alone to stockpile lanthanide and re-sell it well below market value. The miners' union on Anobis also accused Brentaal of "bullying" the planet into awarding the discount. Brentaal's waiver of the discount is also seen as an effort to reassure its partners that it has no intention to undermine the ores market, and as a gesture of respect to Anobis. It still receives a considerable 15% discount on duralium from Anobis, however.
