After some days of a gently shifting flow of news stories playing up the negative elements of Stark's tyranny by Lennons media Empire, he had organised a public address in a theatre in Qatamer, Capital of Kinyov Province. The local COMPNOR branch was out in force to support their man in making his first public address close to his birthplace, but equally numerous were the young and idealistic, those who would likely be the footsoldiers of the Kinyov Democratic Party. Also out in force was the middle class, educated college graduates making up a significant percentage of the audience - engaged by ideas of enlightenment and also seeing that their class would only profit from a new arrangement. Everyone on the way in was scanned for weapons etc by the KDP Security Agents present. Numerous guards were also present in the theatre, positioned tactfully in plain clothes so as not to arouse attention.

"This address is entitled 'A long habit of not thinking a thing wrong gives it a superficial appearance of being right.' - Why we owe it to our ancestors to overturn the injustice of Alyn Stark's tyranny." spoke the Introductory speaker after giving a rundown of Professor Lennon's background, allowing a round of applause before Lennon took the podium.

"I'd like to thank you all for making it out today to hear me speak in this place so close to my heart, it means a lot to me to see support or even just interest in improving the lives of the people of our province and of Lorrd. It gives me a profound optimism that we will lead Kinyov Province and Lorrd into a bright new era of Liberalism and Enlightenment; to the benefit of all.

In any constitution, power has to come from somewhere and must reside with someone. In the Kinyov Province it comes from the Lord and some is delegated to reside with government officials. The people barely get a look-in, being given only the occasional chance to participate in the formal political process.

One key feature of the constitution is the continuation of arbitrary, unlimited and unaccountable power - all of which derive from the Lord. Some of these are exercised by the government, some continue to be exercised by the Lord of Kinyov Province.

The Argazdans abused us in the past, they took our homes, our freedom, and our  very speech. Their shackles were eventually cast off, but unscrupulous individuals have put us into a situation which is barely an improvement from a well thought out perspective. In our chains we were the slaves of aliens, out of them we have become the subjects of petty monarchs - worst of all they and their allies dare defend this system as not one which is to be tolerated but one which ought to be embraced. I whole heatedly reject any assumption that the people of the Kinyov Province are desirous of the rule of faceless death troopers serving an unelected monarch.

After the slavers were cast out these exploitative men were able to sneak into the power vacuum and secure for themselves and their descendants almost infinite power and money profiting hand over fist instead of redistributing the wealth of our world to us. The Lords of Lorrd turned their back on us. I ask Lord Stark this question - when Man toiled and Women span (under Argazdan whips) who then was the Gentleman?

What we need, what we deserve, is a fully elected and accountable State. Government by the people and for them.

Freedom had been hunted round Lorrd, reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.

We have it in our power to begin the world over again, to build a better world for every Lorrdian.

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be a Lord - that’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible. We all want to help one another; human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness, not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there’s room for everyone and the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone.

The way of life can be free and beautiful.

But we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical, our cleverness hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery, we need humanity and democracy. More than cleverness, we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost.

To those who can hear me I say, “Do not despair.” The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed, the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass and monarchs die; and the power they took from the people will return to the people and so long as men die, liberty will never perish.

Don’t give yourselves to brutes, men who despise you, enslave you, who regiment your lives, tell you what to do, what to think and what to feel; who drill you, diet you, treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts. You don’t hate; only the unloved hate, the unloved and the unnatural.

Don’t toil for monarchs! Work for liberty! It was written, “freedom is within man” — not one man, nor a group of men, but in all men, in you, you the people have the power, the power to create machines, the power to create happiness.

You the people have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then, in the name of democracy, let us use that power! Let us all unite! Let us fight for a new world, a decent world that will give men a chance to work, that will give you the future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power, but they lie! They do not fulfill their promise; they never will, instead luxuriating in silken abodes. The Lords free themselves, but they enslave the people! Now, let us work to fulfill that promise!! Let us fight using every legal means to free the world, to do away provincial barriers, to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness.

Thank you."

Harald Lennon then stood to answer the questions of the audience.

There were those in the audience who were watching Lennon's performance from within the audience who bore Lennon a little less good will. One of them who was more intrigued by the man's purpose had arrived recently from Naboo and had quietly taken to the surface, coming in through a side entrance thanks to the KDP security teams. He kept his face shaded by a hat and generally stood towards the edges of the crowd. The number of college graduates were noted, as well as the young and the idealistic. Fortunately, the young were easily swayed and the educated college graduates had little to greatly improve when it came to their way of life; educated Lorrdians were in high demand in a number of fields around the galaxy, and those that remained on Lorrd were still well-to-do. Nonetheless, Stark listened to Lennon's speech.

Happening to be near the front, Stark was lucky enough to be the first voice heard and he stood tall, taking off the hat he wore to address Lennon directly. "You called for me, Mr. Lennon, and I've come to hear you out. I applaud the vigor with which you speak; you are certainly devoted to your beliefs. I hesitate to question so prestigious a man, for my own beginnings are far more humbler than yours," when Stark said this, there was a smattering of friendly laughter; Stark's rise from bastard to current position was well-known and respected and more than a few people knew the enmity House Garth held for Stark.

"I would like to apologize, on behalf of the so-called 'faceless death troopers' that work daily in the hot, desert environment in their armor to keep the peace, help find lost travelers and in general, assist in the stability of the Kinyov Province." To this, the applause grew louder, for the men and women of the Kinyov Province Defense and Police Forces were well-known and liked in the community; minus the exception of the few here and there that had an over-inflated ego, but by and large, the people respected the defense forces and did not fear them.

"I ask Mr. Lennon this question in return: when these so-called exploitative men took power, why did they give freely of their wealth? Why have their descendents constantly shared openly, funding schools, public hospitals, backing unions and trade guilds and improving the quality of life on Lorrd? Why, Mr. Lennon, do you attempt to make the current regime seem as if it is despotic and denying the Lorrdians the right to freedom? Freedom exists, my fellow Lorrdians, and you all know this deep inside yourselves. The Houses of Assembly, Representatives and Delegates are all elected men, all whom you have voted in yourselves through your own free will."

Stark turned so he was addressing the crowd, which had moved back to give him room to speak, focusing upon him now. "Mr. Lennon states that the rulers of Lorrd are 'unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts,' but I ask you, my fellow Lorrdians, simply because one man from each House sits at the head of aforementioned houses, has that ever denied you free will or vote to change the world? Never. Never in life, my friends. Mr. Lennon makes it sound as if the ruling bodies of Lorrd have brainwashed and enslaved you. You all know from the past what enslavement was, and this? This is no enslavement. This is our government, my friends. This is the Tricameral Parliament of Lorrd.

"Mr. Lennon may say that the Houses of Lorrd never fulfill their promises, but all of you know different. When House Volmen said they would create one-hundred thousand new jobs in the agricultural industry, they kept their promise, and all of Lorrd profited. When House Malos opened it doors during the recent natural disasters and sandstorms, how many of you took shelter there? Even House Garth, whom I can openly state has never wished to see me in power because of my parentage, has kept their promises with countless aid in education reforms, better schooling and improvements across the board.

"My friends, I will even speak of myself. 'Lord' is naught more than a title. You in the Kinyov Province are not slaves nor have you ever been. You have never been serfs in a fiefdom and you all know you are free people. Do I assist from time to time in the ruling of the province? Yes, I may give a suggestion here or there, but all of you know I do not issue orders nor encourage harshness. If this title is so loathsome to the people of the province, I will seek to abolish it in the favor of the more modernized term, 'governor.'

"My dear Lorrdians, you are always close to my heart. I do not wish to take the scene away from Mr. Lennon though. This is his day to speak, and I will let him have it." Stark would move through the crowd followed by an ear-splitting roar of applause. Between his impassioned voice and gestures and his pleas and entreaties, he won the heart of the people once more, and Mr. Lennon might well see a very fair amount of people following Stark towards the theater exit.

The idea anyone would walk out was fanciful. Lennon, after all this was a Kinyov Democratic Party meeting. Rather than polite applause the man would largely meet heckling, derision and scorn from the crowd surrounding him. Eventually when he left there would be boos and laughter at the man.

"I'm not sure if I should be honoured or intimidated that the Lord of the Province has come down from his castle to speak to us. Well, one thing is for sure - that is that our message is reaching people, right to the top of the chain.

And to answer Mr Stark. Yes the system has Democratic elements, even a significant percentage of power vested in such. However, no system which retains any power vested in those who are unelected - be they legitimate or bastard born they still draw their source of authority from their blood and not the people - that is what is wrong with Kinyov Province. Power must come from the people, all of it - even a small portion of tyranny is unacceptable. I find it particularly distasteful that Mr Stark stated "you were never slaves" - considering the ancestors of all Lorrdians suffered under Argazdan whips - and we do owe it to them to allow no tyranny - big or small - to exist in our lives or Government.

I am also astonished that Mr Stark does not see that whatever the quality of government - I say not that his is good or bad in its effect - I say that it is wrong in principle, that whatever the effects of the system, the system itself is wrong in no uncertain terms. Perhaps Mr Stark would make a very fine president, what the system robs us of is the chance to find out if that would be the case - instead, Stark is given power not because he's voted for but because he happened to be fathered by someone with a powerful ancestor. And this is the key difference, might does no make right, but right makes might!

Our own Emperor, supreme magistrate of the Empire - do we oppose his rule? Absolutely not. He is a man of the most stunning virtues, filled with brotherly love, and a desire for relief and truth, but does he claim he was born to it by happenstance? No, Emperor Palpatine worked for it, each day of his life he gave a little more to his state, he faced down innumerable threats, even monstrous Jedi abominations.. And for that and because he was the best man for the job the Senate elected him Emperor, a title which he deserves and has shown himself to have the merit for. That is what I believe in, gentlebeings, election of individuals to supreme office, instead of them being born to it."

When Stark had stated that those of the Kinyov Province were never slaves, he had referred to the present regime, and learned people would be able to pick apart the words and see what he'd meant, and these here were all learned people to some degree. Whether or not it was specifically a Democratic Party meeting did not mean Stark could not steal followers from Lennon; indeed, quite the opposite by making such a show and being willing to come down and address the people without guards or followers or the like showed many that Stark was not some high and mighty lord to sit and simply watch the people from afar; it was that he came and actually cared enough to make the appearance. In this light, he met with less derision than one might assume, and did sway a group of people away; perhaps not so large as he'd assumed, but even a moderate win was a win.
