The Eavesdropper came out of hyperspace at the edge of the system in which Aaris lll resided. From all known accounts, the planet was still only inhabited by the lizard-sapiens that had been there for some time. In all probability, their arrival was most likely the most eventful since Darth Novak had scorched a large portion of the world in his effort to capture fodder so many years ago.

The shuttle immediately maneuvered away from the hyperspace lanes, scanning for any ships or activity in the sector. If none were found, they would proceed closer to the planet, searching for radio signals or the like that would denote a base camp of settlers or some such.

The Kathol Sector, where Aaris III was located, was known for its intrigue. The Kathol Republic and the Pimbrellan League were only two of the many political factions that competed with each other for power here. Spies were everywhere, so were ships belonging to some Confederation or League or Republic or other, and even, on occasion, the New Republic. Aaris III, however, was indeed largely removed from all of this. The planet had no economy and very few inhabitants. But it did have some.

Most prominent among them was a research team assigned to excavate the ruins of the planet for artifacts and information, paying particular attention to why the ancient Aaris species had died out. The team consisted of just three individuals—two researchers and one mercenary hired for security purposes. They had a small base camp in the jungle and, like MS-133, the Imperial research team that preceded them a decade ago, they had a comm transfer satellite in orbit to relay their findings to Kal'Shebbol.

There was a lesser known settlement on the planet, however. Pirates had established an outpost of their own in the jungle. And why not? Two hyperlanes converged into one at Aaris III, meaning that all ships traveling through this region of the Kathol Sector had to drop out of hyperspace above the planet. It was perfect for piracy, and the outpost boasted a number of hangars and warehouses that were camoflauged beneath the jungle canopy.

But that was about the extent of the population of Aaris III, along with the few remaining Aaris, the reptilian species who dwelled in the crumbling ruins of the planet.

the shuttle picked up the comm satellite as it neared the planet, immediately breaking off into a larger orbit and transmitting the data back to hejin. a course of action was decided upon and the dp20 gunship, along with a full squadron of z-95s and the half squadron of r-41 starchasers were sent out to aaris lll alongside the trio of odd fighters that had supplemented the fight against the patrol boat.

perhaps eight light minutes behind them was the bulk cruiser and the transports that made up the rest of the fleet. it would be an imposng sight emerging over aaris and, with the fighters in the fore, it might well be possible to blast the comm satellite before a message could be fired off.

The research team wasn't likely to notice the approaching ships right away. Many, many ships approached Aaris III, usually on their way to somewhere else. And of course, the team spent most of their time in the field. However, as soon as the "standby" signal from the comm satellite stopped transmitting to Kal'Shebbol, eyebrows would be raised—specifically, the bushy, blonde eyebrows of Tinius Trumboldt, the New Republic's governor of the Kathol Sector. He would run a hand through his hair and sigh if/when he was told the news (if, indeed, the Ebon Fist destroyed the comm satellite). He was tired of scrambling gunships to Aaris III to respond to pirate raids, especially since his ships always arrived too late to stop the pirates, or even find them.

This time, however, might be different. A New Republic task force under Commodore Jade Paddox, assigned specifically to hunt down the Lucian Alliance pirates, had come to investigate the endemic pirate activity in the Kathol Sector for possible ties to the Lucian Alliance. The task force was currently at Kolatill, a trading hub that, as the Force would have it, was not far from Aaris III. According to the manifest that Paddox had provided to Trumboldt, the task force would just now be preparing to leave Kolatill for Kal'Shebbol. Trumboldt would dash off a transmission to them, requesting they take a look at what was, most likely, a malfunction at Aaris III. But malfunction or not, it would be a good place to sniff about for pirate activity.

it was fortunate, perhaps, that the fist's intent was not an extended stay, but a hit and run for results operation. when it was determined no immediate activity arose, the bulk cruiser was sent a message to stand down outside the system while the dp20 and its escorts headed outsystem and to hyperspace with utmost haste. the shuttle would be the only returning member within a half hour to check results.
