Since the beginning of this session, and since the recent resignation of Representative Loran, both the Economics and Commerce Councils have been without chairmen to guide them in this time of peril (but also opportunity) for our trade and our economy. These positions can no longer stay vacant, and so today I announce the appointment of Senator Luneray Kruus to chair the Economics Council, and Senator Reuke Cambrist to chair Commerce. Senator Kruus is a being who, I believe, shares my financial thinking and who I can work with on such pending measures as privatizing the New Republic Bank, and examinating the political status of some of our businesses. And Senator Cambrist's qualifications speak for themselves, as a Senator to Brentaal and a former trade representative.

I trust that these men will capably steward the New Republic's fiscal and commercial affairs, and I have faith that they will use the powers of these positions responsibly. I open the floor to any remarks that they may wish to make, but otherwise, let us get to work, gentlemen.

Eli Fitzgerald
Chief of State

Eli Fitzgerald
Senator of Ralltiir (10 BBY—Present)

"I was elected to do some flamethrowing in the Senate. To a light a fire under those Senators and make it hot for them."

Let me be the first one to congratulate on Senator Kruus for being appointed as a chairman of the Economics Council and Senator Cambrist as a chairman of Commerce. I would like to personally applaud Chief of State Fitzgerald for selecting both of them to run the Councils that was vacated by former Representative Loran. I believe the Chief of State made the right choice. Again, I congratulate both men on their recent appointments.

Tremaine Fowlkes,
Senator of Mowgle

"Allow me to echo the words of the esteemed Senator from Mowgle in congratulating Senator Kruus on his appointment, and the esteemed nobility of Senator Cambrist of Brentaal. I am sure that these respective members of the Senate will bring honour to their newly appointed chairs. I look forward to working closely with Senator Cambrist and with Senator Kruus."

I thank the members from Mowgle and the IMC for their kind words, and the Chief of State for having appointed me to this position. My congratulations to Senator Kruus, as well, for his appointment. Suffice to say, I look forward to working with you all to develop a dynamic trade policy for the New Republic that will be beneficial to us all, and to streamline the Commerce Council and its affiliated departments so as to make them more efficient and responsive to the needs of our planets and our people. My first act (among many to follow) will be to adopt the "Brentaal model," to personally convene a public meeting of the Council once a week to articulate our policies and recieve questions and comments from the trade and customs guilds, the people and the press, as I did until recently as Brentaal's trade representative.

I will also be willing to meet with every Senator and discuss with them how best their worlds (or corporations) can benefit from the Republic's flourishing commercial market. I will also soon ask the Senate for more direct control of the various departments concerned with commerce, such as the Bureau of Ships and Services, to hire and fire managers as necessary and to review their policies. With all of these changes enacted, I believe we can accomplish great and profitable things for the New Republic and its people, and as aforementioned, I look forward to working with you all.

Senator Cambrist, Brentaal
Chairman of the Commerce Council

Carson’s eyes were quizzical at best as he looked at Fitzgerald. Usually he agreed with the Chief of State’s policy but today he had to question just why the leader of the New Republic would make such an obvious blunder in appointing the two most unlikely candidates for those positions.

Before speaking (as usual) he shuffled his notes (which were all blank today) and cleared his voice. He looked at Kruus and Cambrist each in turn as he spoke. “I too would echo the chorus of the Senate this day in congratulating each of you on your respective appointments. I am sure that the New Republic stands only to benefit from these selected members today.

“I too look forward to working closely with each of you, and especially Senator Cambrist as his interests and mine are very closely related. Congratulations Senators and may this day be the start of an ongoing increase in our Government.”
