A horn sounded a war cry over Limmapia, and a line of a dozen Ewoks appeared from the brush on the ridge overlooking the village, brandishing their spears, bows, clubs, tomahawks and blasters and rallying their armies. With the help of Professor Mankuskett and the NRI, the Ewoks―many of them victimized by, and all of them threatened by the Malakists―had been easy to organize. Even traditionally rival tribes set aside their differences to unite against this common foe in a way they hadn't since the Imperial occupation, and with the NRI's logistical support (namely weapons, transportation and strategy), their armies were able to assemble quickly and put their plan into action while the Malakists were still in disarray and their village was largely deserted.

As soon as they showed themselves on the ridge, the few warriors left inside the village would undoubtedly sprint out of their huts with weapons in hand, ready to repel the attackers. That's when the invading Ewoks opened up from the trees with the sniper rifles they had been hastily taught to use, missing most but still felling many. With Limmapia in disarray, the Ewoks on the ridge began to descend. First a dozen of them, then eighteen, then two dozen, and so on until the furry creatures eventually swarmed down the bank in no particular order; all while a line of archers rained dutaks ("arrows") into the village ahead of the charging Ewoks to thin out whatever organized resistance the Malakists had put together.

Their goals were twofold: one, to charge the temple and destroy the false god Malaki. Two, to defile the women of the village, not simply as a wanton, sexual conquest, but rather because their females would thus be "impure," assimilated with other tribes that the Malakists were so determined to destroy. An act of religious genocide? Perhaps, but not uncommon to Ewok culture. With most of the Malakist army still gone, the Ewoks should have little trouble in overtaking their remaining defenses and capturing the village, going hut to hut to make sure the females and woklings were safe.

Meanwhile, back in the forest the Prudential's floodlights came to life, shining flourescent light upon the forest floor, the droids, the remaining Ewoks, and Deven and his mercenaries. The gunship's loud speaker came on, and the Captain's voice called authoritatively down to Deven and his party. "Poachers," he announced, "This is the New Republic gunship Prudential. Leave your weapons where they are, stand well clear of your droids and ordnance, deactivate them if possible, and await detention imminently for killing protected species and intruding on a protected site. Repeat, leave your weapons where they are and stand clear of your droids." The Captain shut off the intercom and glanced at his Lieutenant, his brow raised with bemusement at Deven's last transmission. "Not what it looks like, he says?" The two men shook their heads.

In the ship's modest cargo bay, the vessel's marines and a small team of NRI agents readied themselves to rappel to the forest floor, strapping on tethers and rifles. But first, the Prudential wasn't quite finished cleaning up.

Malaki Kruus heard the screaming as his village was fired upon, gesturing to the three B1s and one (limping) B2 he had under his command, knowing the majority of the army was away on campaign, he doubted he could lead anything but the most scanty resistance. He heaved his bloated corpulent figure from his throne 'Order the females and the woklings to end their own lives!' he said enraged, 'bring the warriors into the temple' he then demonstrated to the ewoks who had been puzzled why he had ordered a scaffolding rampart built around the inside of the temple about 2 meters way up the 10 meter high wall, and why he had ordered small holes to be left in the masonry to allow blasters to be fired through.

The droids lead a spirited attack out from the village, charging towards the lines of snipers, likely being picked off quickly aside from the B2 which charged into the enemy line whirling around and firing, Deven's lightsaber activated and having been whelded to its forearm, its form immune to smallarms would present a short term problem and allow the Ewoks to gather in the temple.

He nodded to the sad Ewoks as they build the pyre on his altar/table in the middle of the room, a shaman anointing it with sacred oils, he handed an Ewok a copy of his writings (including the treaty signed with the ewok chiefs signing in perpetuity much land over to the Kruus family), on metalic plates 'Here Chumpy, take these through the secret tunnel, run, and bury them in the woods on the sacred mound, for I must die now so that you may live eternally.' he stroked the little bears delicious looking forehead 'I will not forget you Chumpy, and I will see you when you are seated with my father across the Stars, and look out tonight, for there will be a new star in the heavens, and he shall be me.' he then moved to lie on the Pyre, dousing himself with a large cup of sacred oils.

'Light the pyre' he commanded the closest Ewok, and reverendly a circle of them gathered around their God as they lit his pyre, and as he burned, he did not seem to feel pain but just looked placidly across to chumpy, speaking his last words to him 'Go now, and live.'

Chumpy knew that the Defense of the Temple would not last, so he took his staff, his knife and the plates in a haversack, and opened the secret passage, located behind the statue at the rear of the temple, not being noticed by the others as he slipped down it and into the woods some hundreds of meters behind the lines of the attacking Ewoks.

The Ewoks in the chapel put up a fierce fight though, having no less than 3 blasters they fired them with their bows out of the arrow slits on the temple, the large oaken doors themselves being braced with pews which were also broken up to form a barricade a few meters from the door, the 43 warriors remaining prepared to sell their lives dearly as their God immolated, filling the rafters with noxious smoke.

When the Ewok charged Deven with spear and tomahawk, he couldn't very well bisect the furry little bastard. It would look bad with the gunship above his head to do more violence, so in place of his saber, Deven reached through the Force, pushing outwards hard enough to shove both spear and Ewok away and in different directions. The mercenaries, willing to deal with Ewoks, were not willing to cross a full gunship and had already thrown down their weapons and moved aside. There was little Deven could do other than order the droids to deactivate and move aside to join the mercenaries. He wasn't about to throw down his lightsaber, however.

As he stood there, heused the comm pack to send a reply transmission to the vessel's captain again. Perhaps this time, a different message might get through that would make more sense

"Gunboat captain, this is Darth Flare of the New Sith Order claiming diplomatic immunity under the grounds of a rescue mission to save lives. Any further damages to equipment belonging to Druckenwell, even on loan, will be filed as vandalism. The remaining droids have been deactivated, but myself and my compatriots will not be wrongfully imprisoned. If you need to contact a high chain of command, then do so. You may also wish to contact Druckenwell's Minister of Defense. We will wait here, captain."

The crew of the ship watched with disbelief as Deven, below, appeared to use the Force against the Ewok. A Sith? They actually exist? Their mouths could only fall open when he then hailed them, admitting to it. Most of the crew hadn't heard of Druckenwell's so called New Sith Order, but some of the NRI's officers had, and advised the Captain, crew and marines that it was (most likely) not a fraud, and to be prepared for anything. But otherwise, the plan remained the same; the Captain had been briefed on his mission and versed in the applicable laws, and didn't feel a necessity to go up the chain of command. If mistakes would be made, they would be his alone and he would accept the consequences (although the idea of taking an apparent Sith aboard his ship did not sit well with him, but so be it).

"Mr. Flare," he replied, this time on Deven's comlink rather than the speaker, "You will be detained imminently for trespassing on a protected site and murdering a protected species. You may contact your representatives or legal counsel when you are in custody. Your cooperation and your complaint will be noted, please continue to stand clear. You are advised to cover your ears." The Captain clicked off his comm handset and nodded to his ExO, "Commence firing."

The Prudential opened up again, this time exclusively on the droids, tanks, and spider walkers. The forces were engaged in a blatantly illegal activity, and thus they were forfeit no matter who owned them. The Captain would have preferred to impound them as evidence, but the Prudential didn't have any ion cannons and, besides, they had evidence enough already. 30 more seconds of quad laser fire and 6 concussion missiles later, the tanks, walkers and most of the droids were destroyed. In the maelstrom, the marines (5 of them, and an NRI commando) had their boots on the forest floor even before the dirt, smoke and particulate debris had cleared, finishing the remaining droids with their A280 rifles.

But deactivated droids were one thing; a Sith was another, especially one who might resist arrest. Three of the marines approached Deven and the mercenaries with their rifles set to stun, hoping not to use them but ready to do so. They had intended to cuff the suspects, but how do you cuff a man with a weapon for an arm? Nonetheless, they tossed pairs of stun cuffs to the mercenaries and instructed them to fasten them and submit into custody, informing them of the charges again. "Mr. Flare," one of them asked, "Do you understand the charges against you?"

Back in Limmapia, the battle was turning gruesome. Dead Ewoks were strewn up and down the ridge outside the village, many of them grotesquely disembowled (but still adorable, even when dismembered) from the B2's crudely wielded lightsaber. Even after the droid was overwhelmed and knocked to the ground, many more Ewoks were killed as they tried to pummel its durasteel frame with spears and clubs that were effectively useless. It wasn't until the droid's arm was pried off, and the Ewoks brought their blasters to bear, that the B2 was finally rendered inoperable.

The other droids were taken down more easily, and the Ewoks eventually stormed the village. They secured many of the huts, females and woklings before Malaki's mass suicide order could be delivered to most of them (since Malaki seemed more concerned with fortifying his temple than spreading the Word). Sieging the chapel would be more complicated, however. When the first line of Ewoks was cut down, and their blasters proved ineffective against the masonry, they realized they would need a different tack.

While a party of Ewoks went into the surrounding woods to fell a tree for use as a crude battering ram, another group used gliders and ropes to land in the surrounding trees and onto the temple walls, rappelling down to the building's firing loopholes, plunging their spears into them and firing blasters indiscriminately within. The Ewoks also tried setting fire to the Malakist's homes (after the females and woklings had been removed, that is) to entice them to open the doors and surrender. Mere distractions, of course; the warriors that Malaki had around him would probably die before they surrendered.

Grimacing as the droids were destroyed without even a chance to ask for them to be held in protective custody for recovery. It had only been a small portion of his master's private army, but it was still a loss nonetheless, with little to show for the result other than dead mercenaries, destroyed droids and a lost arm, though the last issue had Deven thinking already. If the infamous General Grievous had been able to split his two arms into four, what prevented Deven from building a large artificial arm around the lightclub?

The mercenaries, definitely in over their heads, nearly fell over themselves protesting innocence and not knowing what they had agreed to while simultaneously fumbling to get the cuffs on more quickly. Deven, brought back to the present by the words of the mercenaries, sighed and shook his head. Shrugging slightly, he dropped his arms (well, arm and weapon) to his side before retrieving his comlink.

"Captain... you may or may not know of the New Sith Order. You may or may not have a clue what has gone on here on Endor. I know a trek through the woods for relaxation ended up with my party attacked and slaughtered. When I attempted a rescue, you stepped in. Perhaps I went about it the wrong way, but I am no poacher. If self-defense is guilty, if killing a being to save your own life is murder, then I can hardly contest the charges. I will accept your custody, but I need to contact Minister Novak immediately."

Slipping the comlink back into his belt pouch, he grinned slightly at the three marines who were likely securing the mercenaries.

"I'd let you disarm me, gentlemen, if you'll pardon the pun, but I'm rather attached. Why don't we settle for taking me to the person of rank I can address first?"

"Wes? Hodges? Lieutenant T'sharrl? A word, please." The Captain and his assembled officers stood before the Prudential's bridge viewport, speaking quietly, in confidence with each other. Deven's transmission could be heard playing in the background. "I don't like this," the Captain said. "I don't want a Sith aboard this ship, let alone here on the bridge, let alone without restraints."

"Do we really believe he's a Sith?" the Lieutenant asked.

"You saw what he did! And he's got a laser sword for an arm, Force sake. I'm not taking any chances."

"What choice do we have?" Hodges noted, "He's cooperating with us, and we have to take him in."

"Well look," the Captain said. "The manual sure as hell doesn't say anything about Sith, now does it? I think we need to improvise here. I'm the Captain of this ship, and if I think that it could be commandeered, by this Sith and his weapon and his.. Force.. trickery, then I have to do what's necessary to keep this crew safe, yes?"

There was a contemplative pause, eventually broken by Lieutenant T'sharrl. "You have to tread carefully, Sir. We have to tread carefully."

"No," the Captain raised a hand to preempt him. "This is my decision, and I'll take the consequences for it. I'll be held responsible, not you."

"What do you have in mind, Sir?" Wes asked.

The Captain gazed sternly out the viewport for a moment, then nodded. "Put me through to our men on the ground."

* * *

The marine closest to Deven reached his free hand to his earpiece as he recieved the transmission, his right still holding the rifle, slung under his arm. The rest of the marines would also hear the conversation. "Yes Sir, I read you. Yes, the others have been taken into custody." There was a long pause as the soldier listened, then a concerned expression appeared on his face. "Repeat, Sir? Yes, well. Yes, Sir." The marine glanced at the other soldiers, then back to Deven as he raised his rifle. "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to keep your arm and your weapon at your sides please.." He hesitated for a moment, then pulled the trigger three times in succession, firing blue, fluorescent stun blasts at the Sith.

If he was hit, not even a Sith would be able to hold onto consciousness. If he made any effort to dodge the shots, the rest of the marines would join in, firing stun blasts of their own.

Even as the marine began to raise the rifle, Deven was rather sure he knew what was coming. His options were decidedly few. With the three-meter range the lightclub gave him, Deven wouldn't necessarily have to be close to cut down a few people. It occured to him though, that even should he kill or disable the soldiers on the ground, the gunship could simply turn its weapons upon him instead, a prospect that did not interest him in the slightest.

It was for this reason and knowing that Novak would gain his freedom as quickly as possible that he stood motionless, letting the trio of blasts wash over him before collapsing.
