Senator Ray was, I am sure, a good man in the majority of his deeds and actions, and I do not hope to slight him in the least but putting forth this motion so soon after his resignation. Security and safety are paramount to all within the New Republic and the worlds that it protects as a governing body. As such, we cannot be without a Chairman for the Defense Council. I move that we elect a new Chairmen posthaste so that the Remnant may not capitalize upon any possible signs of weakness within our government. We cannot afford to let petty problems weaken our resolve in securing the freedom and rights of the oppressed.

Senator Ryuun
Druckenwell

I do agree Senator Ryuun, and I especially think whoever we make Chairman must be a man of action, a man with a reputation larger than his stature, but someone not sullied with the old fashioned thinking and stubborness that has filled this chamber from the Defense Council Chair in the past.

Council Chairmen are, of course, appointed positions rather than elected ones, but if the Senate wishes to elect a suggested candidate, it is of course something that I will take into consideration. I also agree with Senator Ryuun's sentiments, that the position should indeed be filled as soon as possible and prudent.

Senator Kruus, you strike me as an enlightened sentient. I applaud your positive outlook on whomever will be selected as the new Chairman (or Chairperson if I am to remain politically correct, I suppose). Chief of State Fitzgerald does bring up the fact that Chair positions are appointed. An election may, in some ways, be messy. It might also cause more squabbling with the long-standing appointed Senators who have been a part of the New Republic since it's formation. To this end, I have an idea which may or may not work, and I do hope none of you think me too presumptuous.

Senators, Chief of State, Druckenwell is practically an infant in admission to the New Republic. I, in that sense, am in some ways an infant to the position of Senator. As Senator Kruus speaks of a man with an immense reputation, I confess my position as planetary governor pales in comparison, in some ways, to that of Senator. Nonetheless, I wish to state that, during Imperial occupation, I was able to do well for the citizens of Druckenwell, making their lives better in what ways I could and ensuring that their rights were upheld to the best of my ability.

To reach the point, I would, if allowed, place myself forward as a possible candidate for the position of Chairman of the Defense Council. There are several reasons for this: firstly, I would only accept the position as a temporary, at least until I had proven myself to the esteemed members of this Senate. Secondly, as I am a new member, which might seem questionable, it may well prevent the older members of the Senate from fighting over the position, which would only show unfortunate weakness to our counterparts amongst the Remnant.

I offer this only as consideration.

As Chief Fitzgerald has said, it is an appointed position. If the Senate is doubtful in the selection, I believe it can call for a confirmation hearing in relevance to the person... however that can also be messy. I am sure, however, the Chief Fitzgerald will consider several individuals for this important position, and choose the correct being to lead the Council that is surely ready to continue its work.

If election are to be under way for the position, or if Chief of State is going to appoint someone to that position, either way I would like to officially nominate someone that I think may be suitable for the position. That is, if he is up to the challenge. I officially nominate Senator Carson of Kuat to be the Chairman of Defense Council. I can only hope the fellow Senator would accept my nomination or that Chief of State would consider the person I have suggested.

“I am honored, Senator Fowlkes, by your confidence in my abilities. Let me just say that I have no doubts what-so-ever that Chief of State Fitzgerald will do well in which ever choice me makes.”
