The fleet stood ready in orbit; ready to carry forth the message of peace to the planet of Deralia alongside the ships of Neimoidia in the name of the New Republic. Novak, however, was not on board yet. His work and the message from Deven had drawn him planetside for some time yet. One of his few enjoyments was walking through the various city parks. As his face was known to many and his actions in greatly bolstering the economy and creating new jobs, Novak rarely met anger outside of the few who did not like some of his defensive-minded policies, so he felt no fear in walking. Today, however, was different. Today plans that had been set in motion would begin certain changes on Druckenwell. The other who had knowledge of this was but a single person, one plucked from the down-and-out jobless on the planet and promised riches and a move to a new locale of his choice. The man's name escaped Novak at this time, but it was certain he wouldn't be missed. Novak did his homework when he undertook such missions. Novak, in effect, intended to have an assassination of himself. A failed assassination in which the 'assassin' would escape and then be smuggled off-planet later with his reward. In truth, the erstwhile assassin would no longer be among the living and Novak would have the freedom he needed to take certain actions.

There, up ahead, dressed in rather cheap, if decent clothing, came the contact. Novak moved towards the man, smiling and giving a nod as he did most people. Realizing he might well die here was part of the thrill, but great deeds were not accomplished without great risk. He would have to trust that the brief blaster instruction he had given the man on aiming would hold. Now it was too late to turn back. His feet carried him towards the man step by step. Holding on the Force as he was, Novak could see the individual beads of sweat on the assassin's forehead. There, the glint of the blaster as it came from behind the man's back. The way his eyes squinted as he brought his arm up to aim. The trigger pull seemed to take eons in the waiting. Then the blast of the weapon and the terrible pain in Novak's side as it tore into him, low and on the left, spinning his body. Novak moved with it, riding the wave of pain and blocking it out simultaneously. The Force powered his movements as the lightsaber came out. The shock in his 'killer's' eyes was evident right up until the blade bisected the skull and removed the top half quite cleanly. Now, as shouts of alarm filled his ears, Novak let the Force go, letting shock take him into unconsciousness. Things were quite underway indeed.

The event was witnessed in its entirety from the scope of a DC-15x sniper rifle in the recesses of a window looking over the park from several floors above it. The weapon's sights had been trained on Novak in the moments prior, and the sniper's finger had just been tensing on the trigger when it had happened; the other assassin, unexpected and unknown to the sharpshooter, approached the Defense Minister on the street and quite simply shot him. A flash of light, another flash of light, a spattering of blood, and both of them were on the ground. Now what? the sniper wondered to himself.

"Colonel Park, the target is down," he said into his earpiece. The room was dark, and he couldn't be seen clearly. "No, I didn't shoot him. No it wasn't Murphy, there's someone else. No, I don't know. He's dead, Novak killed him. Well, he's on the ground too. Hell, I don't know. There's a crowd now, it's out of our hands." There was an exceptionally long pause. "Yes, Sir. Then I'll pack up here. There's bound to be an ambulance, and Murphy is still down there Sir, should we have him follow it? Yes Sir, I'll tell him. Right, over and out."

As he went about disassembling the DC-15x (with a speed and skill of a man who knew how to use one), he transmitted down to Murphy, the CPSA's man seated inconspicuously in a speeder landed just next to the park. He folded up the newsplast he had been pretending to read and warmed the speeder's repulsorlifts, waiting for paramedics to arrive on the scene.

The paramedics' rapid response was almost as swift as the arrival of a pair of AATs that disgorged four B2 battle droids from their sides and Rajek from the command turret of one. The crowd was quite large now, making some movement difficult, but the Druckenwell Security Forces (a branch smaller than the Armed Forces, but trained in the same manner) had cordoned off the area. On board the repulsor ambulance, Novak's unconscious form was quickly loaded up. With one AAT behind and one in the front, the path out of the park was not even used. Instead, the AAT smashed through the park wall; the damage would be paid for by Rajek at a later point, but now, now time was wasted in taking Novak to the nearest large medical center, where he was whisked to an operating room. With the Minister of Defense in surgery, a large amount of droids were pulled to the hospital alongside a goodly number of Druckenwell Armed Forces Commandos, offering counter-sniper protection around the primary entrances as well as guards.

Rajek, who had been out of the loop, was now i n temporary charge of the direct droid forces, but his place kept him at Novak's side. The bacta treatments were the initial method of saving Novak's life. Indeed, Novak had lost a large amount of blood. The assassin, however, had luckily missed all vital organs. That particular corpse now resided in the closest security forces morgue for later identification and, hopefully, the finding of a reason as to why Novak had been fired upon. Momentary speculation fell mainly upon him being a Sith. Not everybody liked the Sith, after all. In fact, few did.

For now, Rajek eagerly awaited the point where his master would once more open his eyes.

The sniper was already gone, having left for the building's speeder garage and driven quietly out the back, onto an adjacent street and disappearing into the traffic that had been diverted around the park; all quite unnoticed in the commotion. Murphy was having considerably less luck, however. With his speeder surrounded by pedestrians (and surprisingly, droids), and having noticed a cordon going up in his rear view mirror, he knew he wasn't going anywhere. Not in his speeder.

He opened the door and stepped out into the crowd, trying to push his way closer to where the paramedics had landed and were, as far as he could see, moving Novak, on a stretcher, into the ambulance. He couldn't tell whether the man was alive or dead. Damn. The crowd pressed in around him, and battle droids could be heard signalling orders to each other in their monotonous, metallic voices. This mission was over.

Well, Plan A was over. This just meant things were about to get more complicated.

Murphy made his way through the crowd and into the park, which had been largely deserted now, walking across the grounds without hurrying or otherwise drawing attention to himself. "Couldn't see anything," he said into his earpiece as he walked. A pause. "Yes Colonel, I'll be there. But what about Novak? Are we assuming he's dead?"

It was nearly three hours after losing consciousness that Novak awoke. His surroundings were quite different than when he had left the waking world. In place of the open air and the park, he was in a windowless room. The smell and feel in the air practically screamed 'hospital,' which meant for starters that his plan hadn't failed. Sensing that he was not alone, Novak turned his head to the side, viewing Rajek to be in attendence, seated in a large waiting chair to his left.

"You lost a large quantity of blood," the droid said without preamble. "The surgeons had a time of saving you, even with bacta treatments. You are only flesh and blood, not indestructable."

Suppressing a slight chuckle, Novak nodded in agreement, raising himself slightly with a wince. Well, faked or not, the pain certainly was trouble enough. It had been worth the rewards it would reap. Now he had to keep moving. There was no time to sit by idle when things were falling into his grasp.

"We need to issue a public statement, Rajek. My people must know I am alive and well in their defense. For now... for now, we must find who sent the assassin. It could have been anyone who stands against my policies; against the New Sith Order. You will be my mouthpiece... the prophet, if you will. You will speak my words to the masses of Druckenwell and then beyond and I... I will guide them all from within the heart of my new temple.

"Go forth, Rajek... tell my people I live and I fight for their safety and continued security."

The droid stood, offered a half bow and turned, departing the room to leave Novak in peace. The word would be carried out.

As he talked with Murphy, when the operative asked the question, he felt into the Force for a moment. And very quickly, his eyes shot open. "No." he said. He then sent out to the other operatives his instruction to the other operatives. "All units, proceed to rally point blue." he said, then leaving his makeshift command center and headed there as well.

Being rather close to Novak, Rajek was understandably upset about the assassination attept. Upset enough, in fact, to practically fortify the entire hospital and post Druckenwell Special Forces teams on the surrounding buildings. Out front, all but the most greviously injured were being turned away, at least until Novak was moved. The sight of AATs and NR-N99 tanks likely drew as many stares as did the soldiers and battledroids.

It was after some internal debate that Rajek allowed for a single holocam operator from the major news station to enter into the hospital for news on Novak's state of health. Supposedly the man would be meeting with Rajek quite soon. For now though, the droid waited, pacing in a rather human manner upon the lobby floor, his electrostaff never more than an arm's reach away.

Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Rajek and, of course, to Novak in his condition (but in fact, unbeknownst even to Governor Ryuun), members of the New Republic Diplomatic Corps―some of whom doubling as NRI consultants―were quietly visiting with many of the most prominent members of Druckenwell's government. Among them; Herman Zess, owner and CEO of Druckenwell Shipyard Corporation, Lorraine Kolth, a prominent member of the financial community, Ulman Wentz, the CEO of SGI Systems, Inc., Roland De'bronjo, manager of the BlasTech manufacturing plant on Druckenwell, and others. All of them complicit in Novak's rise to prominence.

While Rajek was tending to the hospital's defenses, while Novak was recuperating, and while Ryuun was en route to meet with the Chief of State, these power brokers were discussing matters of interest to the Republic, to Druckenwell, and also to their careers (and the continued survival thereof). In addition to the confusion from the assassination attempt, many of Druckenwell's government offices were, in fact, so busy with communications that it may prove difficult to reach them.

The face that was shown to all who were watching the news across Druckenwell was not an unfamiliar one. Adjutant Rajek was known easily enough, for few Ministers had ever kept a droid bodyguard as a meberof their cabinet. His vocal modulations, however, were adequate enough to get the point across to the people viewing. His words though were Novak's. Not being the charismatic Sith, they wouldnot have the same weight and impact, lacking the tone and true inflections, but words were a beginning.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. This broadcast tonight must be kept relatively short for time and security purposes. Let me first assure you that yes, the rumors are true: an attempt was made upon the life of Minister Novak earlier today; an attempt that nearly succeded. At this time, Minister Novak is in critical condition and will shortly be moved to an undisclosed location for further treatment.

"No identification has been located as to the nature of the assassin. The only conclusion that can be drawn at this time is that the would-be killer is either part of a group that is against the New Sith Order and the changes that Minister Novak has made in the runningof Druckenwell. We are working with the Druckenwell Security Forces to further this investigation.

"In his few moments of consciousness, Minister Novak wished me to tell you all that he will return to his full strength as quickly as possible and that his efforts will be redoubled in making Druckenwell a safer and more prosperous world."

With a nod to the holocam operator, Rajek ended the statement to the public. Now, orders had to be issued. The first was to recall the vessel that had been sent to Deralia. Second was for Novak to be moved to the Sith Temple, which was nearly completed.

Novak thanked the Force that there were idealists who flocked to genius. It was for this fact that Novak didn't need to bribe as many people as he might have had to. Saving credits was all well and good, but finding like-minded people was so much better. Overall, the upper echelon of the Druckenwell Armed Forces were loyal to Drucknwell while also supporting Novak's changes. The leaders and troops who mattered most though were those who were loyal specifically to Novak. It was why Novak had spent so much time speaking with the officers and soldiers of the special forces and valuable units over the basic frontline troops, though he hadn't neglected them.

The three men he spoke to in his room while Rajek was delivering the speech were officers in charge of commando units. Novak's current plan involved letting a rabid lion loose in the streets, so to speak. Anti-Sith sentiment would bolster the actions of the people to support Novak. They weren't as likely to see it as anti-Sith as much as it would be seen as directly aimed at anti-Novak.

By the time Rajek was done speaking, the trio of officers had their orders to be given to their soldiers. They now went to carry them out.

After Rajek's speech, it was rather quiet for a while. A bit of activity occurred when the AATs and NR-N99s were dispatched to the spaceport, apparently for guards. If there was a group on Druckenwell aimed to remove the Minister of Defense, it was possible they may try to cause a rather large disturbance, so forces were being distributed in case of an emergency.

Shortly afterwards, several emergency response vehicles were sent out from the hospital as well, apparently as part of the procedures. The citizens were possibly concerned, but it was not a for-sure matter. There was another half hour or so of relative quiet and then the peace was shattered. Several blocks away, an small team of four men had quietly set up shop on the rooftop of a new and currently unoccupied apartment building that more than rivaled the hospital in height. From there, they went quickly about their business of setting up a pair of dual-tube rocket launchers. One could guess what would occur next as they fired upon the hospital, four rockets in total and then another four a little under a minute later. The devastation was incredible, going as far as to collapse one entire wing, but even before the sounds of the blasts had faded away, the men would have departed with their equipment.

The chaos of the attack was terrible. The Druckenwell Security Forces and the Armed Forces soldiers would likely as not be trying to find the culprits while attempting to save those who were wounded and determine who was dead. The area itself and four eight blocks in a radius would be under complete lockdown. If anyone doubted there was an anti-Sith movement on Druckenwell, the doubt may well have been removed from their mind.
