"Thank you for coming," Fitzgerald said first to Ryuun, as the Senator entered his suite after a tedious series of security checks which, surely inconvenient, were nonetheless necessary. Still, Ryuun might note it uncommon for a man who refused security details in public and traveled in open speeders to suddenly have such a presence around him. But then again, his apartment was bustling with activity; in the other room, a number of uniformed men could be seen talking amongst themselves, standing over Fitzgerald's desk, on which had been arranged a series of datapads and monitors. Wires ran throughout the suite, and aides carried folders of flimplast hurriedly from room to room. Some of them glanced at Ryuun briefly but didn't seem to notice him.

In contrast, the Chief of State himself seemed serene in contrast to the activity around him, although his demeanor was decidedly somber also; like a man who was certain of what he must do, but didn't want to. The meeting was occurring in the recieving quarters, an intimate, modestly decorated room with several couches and chairs and a view looking out upon the Senate Rotunda in the distance. Fitzgerald gestured for Ryuun to have a seat, as he himself stood in shirt sleeves, his hands in his pockets and his back to the viewport. Senator Emerest was there too, greeting Ryuun with a pleasant, if unusual smile, and regarding him throughout the rest of the meeting with a stern, but not unsympathetic glare.

"I know it's short notice," Fitzgerald continued, apologetically. "I'd like to begin, however, by saying that I've always found you a man of integrity, and a man of good intentions, even if we disagree, and it's my belief that you would never be involved in any sort of impropriety here or on Druckenwell. Would you like some coffee? I know it's early. Already past noon in Druckenwell's capital though, so they tell me."

Eli Fitzgerald
Senator of Ralltiir (10 BBY—Present)

Ryuun was still troubled by the request for a private meeting. It was indeed odd that the Chief of State was surrounded by such security, free as he was in public. The presence of another Senator was even more odd, but when Fitzgerald mentioned Druckenwell, a knot settled in Ryuun's stomach. The offer of coffee was comforting though, and as he sat, Ryuun nodded appreciatively.

"I understand you are a busy man, Chief of State Fitzgerald, so I can only assume this conversation is not something lighthearted or easily discussed. By all means then, I will do my best to dispense with pleasantries and help you facilitate the delivery of whatever news you may have."

He handed Ryuun a mug of coffee on the table that he'd originally poured for himself, but then forgotten. It was a habit of his, particularly when he was busy; he had three cups of coffee presently in the various rooms of his suite, causing some to believe that he wanted one prepared at all times for each room he might happen to be in, though he assured them it was merely a defect of his memory, not an eccentricity. The result, however, was that his residence and office always seemed to smell like coffee. "I'll come to the point," he said.

"Gus?" he held out his hand to Emerest, who handed him a document that the two had apparently been writing before Ryuun arrived. Emerest was generally known in public as a cordial old man, but behind closed doors, as Chair of the Senate, he became the shrewd politician (and disciplinarian) that he truly was. Thus, Senators who were summoned to meet with Emerest could never be quite sure if he was going to invite them to play golf, or ruin their careers. Or both, if he was feeling whimsical. Fitzgerald, a shrewd politician himself, had recognized the value of having Emerest on his side and had developed a working relationship with him early on. He was a man to whom his administration owed much of its success.

Fitzgerald retrieved a pair of reading glasses that he had previously stuffed into his shirt pocket (he believed his glasses made him seem "fallible," and was rarely seen wearing them), and began to read from the document. "We have reason to believe," he began, "that Mr. Novak has made use of bribery, and his command of the Force, to assume his present position as Druckenwell's Minister of Defense, a position which he has used, along with his fleet, to partake in clandestine missions across the Outer Rim, the true nature and purpose of which remains unknown."

"Senator Ryuun himself has expressed his grave and sincere concerns to us, and to New Republic Intelligence, regarding Mr. Novak's undue influence in his government, and his misuse of the vessels comprising Druckenwell's fleet, some of which, according to the Senator, are unaccounted for over days and weeks while "phantom warships" with no transponders are sighted across the Outer Rim, and incidents of mass killings and abductions by such warships are reported. From the evidence gathered from such incidents, the vessels in question match those under Mr. Novak's command. We also have evidence that most recently, Mr. Novak and the forces under his command have been responsible for the murder of Ewoks on Endor, a world and a people to which the New Republic owes more than it can ever repay."

"Thanks to Senator Ryuun's diligence, and the tireless work of New Republic Intelligence, we are only beginning to know the extent of Mr. Novak's activities and intentions. But this we do know; that Mr. Novak has used bribery and coercion to secure his position, that he has abused that position to commit what may be atrocities across the Outer Rim, that he has refused the integration of his forces into Druckenwell's command structure (and thus commands a private army, unlawfully), and that he has, by his own admission, established a 'New Sith Order,' deriving its name and its customs from an order that believes not in peace, but in war; not in coexistance, but in 'the death of the weak.' And this we know for certain, above all, that these acts must not be tolerated in a free society, if it is to remain free."

He paused for a moment, scanning over the document before finding the passage he was looking for. "As of this hour," he continued, "I have ordered the New Republic's 3rd Task Force to assist Druckenwell's government to secure the planet, its people and its institutions in the wake of the apparent assassination attempt on Mr. Novak that occurred this morning. With the cooperation of Senator Ryuun, and members of his government, we will restore to the people of Druckenwell what is rightfully theirs; their defenses, their government, and their freedom to live with suspicion of neither."

He dropped the document onto the coffee table and regarded Ryuun in silence for a moment. "Excerpts," he said after a pause, "from a speech I intend to deliver to the Senate this afternoon. But I can only do that with your cooperation, Senator."

When Fitzgerald began reading, Ryuun's expression had been one of polite interest. By the end of the speech, Ryuun's countenance was grim. It was a serious breach of protocol if Novak had indeed used bribery and the Force to gain his current position. It also gave Ryuun the feeling that he might now be considered 'weak minded' if the Sith had indeed bamboozled him into gaining the office to which he was now appointed. He would have to chose his words carefully here. Tying Novak's actions to Druckenwell could end his political career.

"I will admit that Mr. Novak has undertaken some odd and troubling deeds. This phantom ship business is alarming, as well as allegations of slaughtering Ewoks. I had heard, however, that Endor was suffering some sort of Ewok infighting and, as such, perhaps if one was in the wrong place at the wrong time, one might have to kill those whom one would rather not harm. This could be simple speculation on my part. I also hesitate to say that it was Mr. Novak who was directly responsible for the actions on the Outer Rim. The Remnant has as much access to our open broadcasts as any sentient, and it may be that they wish to discredit Mr. Novak through actions similar to what you describe. Never before has a Sith pledged for the New Republic, misguided or not.

The problem is this, Chief of State Fitzgerald: whether or not his crimes are terrible and whether or not he has used underhanded means to achieve his position, he has the admiration and support of the people. He has created more jobs ad bolstered the economy more in the past months than we had been able to do in a long time. He reformed the military system and, whether or not his ships are a private army, given Druckenwell's citizens a feeling of safety that the Remnant will not descend upon them as they sleep. Many in the Druckenwell Armed Forces respect and admire him, and I fear that to try and engage him and his fleet or even an arrest on Druckenwell will result in a bloodbath. Even without the Force... he is a formidable man.

"My proposal is this: he intended to oversee the matter at Deralia personally. He informed me he had given his ships orders to go forth and gain Deralia as a protectorate. When they depart, all that will be left are two vessels... and the Force knows where he picked up a damaged CR90 from. Either way, he will be split from his space forces, which would make it much simpler to grab him away from his ground forces, or so I would think."

"You have an unworldly optimism, Senator," Fitzgerald said, resting his hands on his hips and glancing absently at the speech on the table below, thinking. His remark was delivered as a compliment, but a barbed one. "Lomen," he continued after a moment's consideration, "I have a rule that's served me well in my career: never allow what is difficult, or what is convenient, to dissuade you from doing what is right. Novak has forced our hand, and I suppose the real test of his character is how many of our and your people he'll see killed for his ends."

"As for his popularity," Fitzgerald said the word "popularity" derisively, as if it were an insult. He shrugged, and turned contemplatively to look out the suite's spacious viewport. "Popular opinion can change quickly. It's a fragile thing, especially considering that your people's admiration for Novak is, in fact, an admiration of something intangible. He is admired for things that haven't occurred; namely, Druckenwell hasn't been subject to violence under his tenure, yet. But nor has it been subject to violence for, what? Over a decade? And surely, Druckenwell's relationship to the New Republic has bolstered your economy much, much more than one man ever could. No Senator," he shook his head. "Opinions will change, quickly."

He was a man who, it was safe to assume, knew much about public opinion; his own approval ratings were consistently high on most worlds, in some places higher even than Mon Mothma had been prior to Shadow Hand. Like all politicians, Fitzgerald claimed that he didn't pay attention to polls, but also like all politicians, he actually did. He had seen the polls on Druckenwell, too. Yes, Novak had his supporters, but they supported him in spite of the fact that he was a Sith. The majority were still distrustful of Sith, and it would take only these new revelations about Novak's activities to unearth the suspicions and the prejudices that they had buried in their hearts. They would scorn Novak just as they had cherished him, and at the markets, the bazaars, the offices, the water coolers, the parks and the squares, they would say to each other, "I knew it all along," "I never trusted him," "I told you so." Because ultimately, the public wanted to see a man destroyed. They wanted their suspicions redeemed, not their hopes, because life is full of disappointment and it is easier to be suspicious than to hope.

Fitzgerald sighed, turned away from the viewport to face Ryuun and returned to the subject at hand. "Your suggestion is not unwise," he said, "but we can't risk Novak's forces escaping to prey on more worlds, not even Deralia." He looked at his wrist chrono. "The task force is already en route; it'll arrive in about five minutes. Senator, I need to know that you're going to support us at Druckenwell, and that you'll order Novak and his forces to cooperate. Your government is already cooperating with us, and I'm told your police are working for us now. But I need you to tell the Senate and the galaxy, and your people, that Novak and his conduct have no place on your world."

"Look at the trouble that he's brought upon you, just in the last day. War with Neimoidia? Protests at your embassy? A bill in the Senate to blockade Druckenwell? Not to mention the stigma of the entire galaxy associating Druckenwell with the Sith, and now with atrocities. I've just heard the Commerce Council is considering punitive tariffs on your world. None of this is helping your people, Senator. For their sake, and the sake of your career, will you support us? I apologize for being blunt, but will you be remembered as the Tarsus Valorum of Druckenwell, or a Sith enabler?"

Ryuun stood, beginning to pace as Fitzgerald spoke. For a few long moments, he was still silent, considering the options and weighing them in his mind. On either hand, it was likely to end badly. Still, there were few options and even less time to consider them.

"I will give him orders to stand down, Chief of State Fitzgerald. I will even order him to surrender, if you wish... but I want no war on Druckenwell. I want no lives lost if at all possible. Druckenwell is not a world used to conflict and I would like to keep it that way.

"As for fines and such... well, if actions were undertaken by a private army not under Druckenwell's control, there is little for Druckenwell to be directly responsible for. Still, my word stands. No bloodshed on my planet if it can be avoided."

"Ours is the most professional fighting force the galaxy has ever known," Fitzgerald said, reassuringly. "We took Coruscant in a week, with remarkably few civilians killed. We will do only what is necessary to pacify Novak and his droids, and apprentices. So truly, the amount of bloodshed depends entirely on Mr. Novak, but of course we'll do what we can to minimize casualties and collateral, as always. We'll also keep you apprised of the operations, if you want to remain here on Coruscant. And not to worry, Druckenwell won't be subject to any fines or prosecution for what Novak has done. Which reminds me," he sat down, finally, on a chair near Emerest's still facing Ryuun, "Can we expect a statement to the Senate, after the speech this afternoon?"

"And also Senator," he added, gesturing in the general direction through which Ryuun had entered the suite, "I'd feel at ease if you'd let me post one or two of those guards with you. Novak might have people in your security detail, or your staff. If he knows that you've found him out, he might try retribution against you, to create a power vacuum. You're a good man, Lomen, and you've made the right decision, and I don't want anything to happen to you."

Ryuun sighed, rubbing his forehead briefly before nodding. He would prepare his own speech for the Senate later that day. For now though... well, Fitzgerald had a point, and Ryuun would accept the guards gratefully. He'd probably have to order his current security detail to be placed under guard until they had been cleared.

"You may have captured Coruscant in a week, Eli... but this is a Sith who was trained by Palpatine and Dooku, if his words are true... some days I don't believe he is quite entirely mentally stable. I don't know... this is just a lot to take in for one day. You see convinced though that Novak will come quietly. I assure that, right or wrong, I would resist with all I had if someone came to steal my freedom.

Despite his political prowess and his distinguished campaigning on Druckenwell for the various political positions he had held on the way to governor and then senator, Ryuun suddenly felt very old and more than a little tired. His own political career was marked with more than one instance of quiet bribery; secrets held so close that sometimes he almost forgot them, yet especially today they weighed heavily upon his mind.

"Perhaps I am wrong, Eli... but while I disapprove of some of his actions, proven or not, and while I do not like his use of the Force to gain his own ends and positions... I cannot hate him. As we all well remember, Master Skywalker saw good in Vader and turned him back to the light at the end. Do what you must do, but try to take him alive. No sentient can walk a dark path for so long that they have no chance of redemption."

If Fitzgerald had known how close to the truth one of his statements in passing to Ryuun had been, he might not have been so comfortable with the Druckenwell detail that awaited Ryuun's return outside Fitzgerald's apartments (likely faced by Fitzgerald's own security detail and Senate guards). Of the ten-man detail, only one, a rather young man by the name of Gareth Plens, was working for Novak. An idealist and slightly troubled young man, Plens had been an ideal candidate; trustworthy in a cause and eager to be instructed by one of the Sith whom he had heard so much about. Like a moth drawn to a flame, he had been suckedin by Novak's charisma.

Oddly, perhaps, were the orders not to harm Ryuun or, in fact, any of the Senate members. It would have made sense to some to place an assassin in the ranks. Instead, Novak had simply wanted Ryuun watched over. Eyes and ears were always appreciated, but Novak had believed that Ryuun was better for the New Republic alive than dead. In the eyes of the Sith, the Senator was a less corrupt man than many who sat within the Senate.

Midway through the meeting, Plens received permission from the detail's commander to take a brief restroom leave, having pled a rather upset stomach due to bad Corellian food ingested the night before. With all the guards around and the Senator likely as not spending quite a bit of time with Fitzgerald, the commander thought little of granting the request.

Moving quickly, Plens would exit the Chief of State's residence (if not stopped) and take the nearest transport to an open communications cafe, one of likely many where holonet and information feeds could be bought and paid for at an hourly rate for terminal use.
