Hostilities at Druckenwell

Senators, Representatives, delegates and friends, as promised I have some brief, but gravely important remarks regarding Druckenwell. As many of you are aware, we've recieved word that Jericho Novak, who you will recall as a former Senate nominee, and Druckenwell's present Minister of Defense, and a Sith, has been the target of an apparent assassination attempt this morning on his world. We're told that he will survive, and we welcome this news not out of any particular concern for Mr. Novak, but because the New Republic does not condone vigilante justice. But make no mistake; justice is what's needed in the case of Mr. Novak, for reasons I will explain.

We have reason to believe that Mr. Novak has made use of bribery, and his command of the Force, to assume his position as Minister of Defense, a position he has used, along with his fleet, to conduct clandestine missions across the Outer Rim, the true nature and purpose of which remains unknown to us and even to Druckenwell's own government.

Senator Ryuun himself has expressed his grave and sincere concerns to us, and to New Republic Intelligence, regarding Mr. Novak's undue influence in his government, and his misuse of the vessels comprising Druckenwell's fleet, some of which, according to the Senator, go missing for days and weeks while "phantom warships" with no transponders are sighted across the Outer Rim, and incidents of mass killings and abductions by such warships (and the droid armies they transport) are reported. From the evidence gathered from such incidents, the vessels and droids in questions match those under Mr. Novak's command.

We also have evidence that, most recently, Mr. Novak and the men and droids under his command have been responsible for the murder of Ewoks on Endor, a world and a people to which the New Republic owes more than it can ever repay. A report on this, and the other incidents to which I've referred, is being compiled and will be presented to the Ruling Council this afternoon.

Thanks to Senator Ryuun's diligence, and the tireless work of New Republic Intelligence, we are only beginning to know the extent of Mr. Novak's activities and intentions. But this we do know; that Mr. Novak has used bribery and coercion to secure his position, that he has abused that position to commit what may be atrocities across the Outer Rim, that he has refused the integration of his vessels and droids into Druckenwell's defense force (and thus commands an unlawful private army), and that he has, by his own admission, established a "New Sith Order," deriving its name and its customs from an order that believes not in peace, but in war; not in coexistence, but in "the death of the weak."

And this we know for certain, above all, that these acts must not be abided in a free society, if it is to remain free.

As of this hour, I have ordered the New Republic's 3rd Task Force to assist Druckenwell's government to secure the planet, its people and its institutions in the wake of the apparent assassination attempt on Mr. Novak that occurred this morning. With the cooperation of Senator Ryuun, and members of his government, we will restore to the people of Druckenwell what is rightfully theirs; their defense forces, their government, and their freedom to live in suspicion of neither.

The floor is open to discussion and debate.

Eli Fitzgerald
Chief of State

Eli Fitzgerald
Senator of Ralltiir (10 BBY—Present)

I applaud Chief of State, and everybody that worked hard on gathering intelligence on the Sith. They deserve to be applauded for their bravery to act in protection of not only the Republic but also the galaxy. It has indeed showed me that no matter how dangerous the threat is, even those who wield force powers at their will, the Republic will act on the interest of keeping the galaxy a secured place. Every sentient beings would be able to at least let out a breath of relief, or they would have a reason to get up out of their bed every single day of their lives. Every sentient beings would be able to fall asleep knowing that the very same people that caused two galaxy-spanning wars, killing billions in process, would not be perceived as a threat anymore.

Again, the men and women that risked their lives in order to attempt and disable the Sith should be applauded for their bravery.

This is a difficult position for me to address, being Senator of a planet where a Sith has abused the position he was appointed to. While I too applaud the work put in by the New Republic Intelligence and the men and women of the 3rd Task Force, I take no pleasure or happiness in what must be done, and what has been ordered done by Chief of State Fitzgerald. For every action there is an explanation, and I can only hope that Minister Novak will surrender peacefully so that explanations will be given. I have no wish to see either the soldiers of the New Republic or the citizens and protectors of Druckenwell harmed in the slightest. Whether or not he is Sith, no sentient should be persecuted for their religious beliefs. It is only when those beliefs take the form of dangerous or hostile actions that we need be concerned.

Might using the Force to coerce his way into office, and holding an unaccountable, personal army be considered "dangerous"? And might the killing of Ranats, Aarisians, and Ewoks be considered "hostile"? Granted these are allegations, but Senator, I feel it is safe to conclude that this little experiment in tolerance is at its end. There is no use in defending that which is indefensible.

I support the Chief of State's decision. It is unfortunate, but necessary.

You have a point, Senator, in which having a private army and using the Force in such a manner is indeed dangerous. As for the other charges? Frankly, and though it may lower me in the eyes of some, I'd rather Ranats or Aaris, races who have not even been seen or heard from in who knows how long killed over Bothans, Sullustans, Neimoidians or humans, or any one of a dozen member races of the New Republic. I don't approve of his actions, but I am glad he did not target New Republic worlds. As for the killing of Ewoks, I still have yet to hear the full story, though I received a transcript of his apprentice's confession.

To paraphrase that famous sentiment, "first they came for the Ranats, and I said nothing for I was not a Ranat; then they came for the Aarisians, and I said nothing for I was not an Aarisian; then they came for the Ewoks, and I said nothing for I was not an Ewok; then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me."

Of course it's not a perfect parable, because it's laughable that something like a Ranat or Ewok should ever speak for me, of all people, but nonetheless I believe the point is made.

Your point is well enough made, Senator Cambrist, though not without some irony. As I have said and as I will reiterate, Novak must be captured. If he stands trial or not is the choice of the Jedi and the Senate, but questions do need answering. A Sith out of the past is an odd thing to have simply pop up, especially at such a turbulent time.

I do hesitate to put so much emphasis on him though. Surey by now the Remnant must be aware of these proceedings from the last day or two. To assume they have no spies is foolish. Novak has no allies in the New Republic; no safe haven to hide at. The Remnant is equally mistrustful of any Sith, so he will find no help there. He is a man with an old, outdated fleet that has no place to go. Dedicate a task force to his capture, but let us turn back to more important matters as well.
