| I propose that a Bureau of Droid Interests and Protection be established to assure droids (those considered sentient, or nearly so) safe and respectful treatment. The Bureau would have broad authority to investigate claims of cruelty and abuse, and to inspect businesses, foundries and so on for this purpose. It would also ensure that sentient droids are not built or programmed for cruel or abusive purposes (such as interrogation droids or "sentient missiles," for instance). All droids in question must be allowed to contact this Bureau; knowingly preventing a droid from making claims of abuse shall be considered a felony. The Bureau shall consist of an 8 member board (at any given time, no fewer than 4 members must be droids and no fewer than 2 must be organic beings), and as many personnel as are required to recieve claims and conduct investigations, as determined by the Ministry of Justice. This Bureau is not to address matters of droid "rights," but rather specifically unsafe and unreasonable labor conditions, and abusive and degrading treatment. Naboo has long regarded sentient droids not as mere property, but as partners in its society. I understand that this view is, sadly, not commonly held in the galaxy. However, I'm sure we can agree that many droids are intelligent enough to be considered sentient and deserve at least some avenue of recourse when they are treated in a senselessly cruel and unusual manner. The least we can do (and I mean that expression literally) is to make bearable the existence that they share with us, since, afterall, we are the ones who programmed them to be aware of this existence. I vote in favor.

| I like the proposal Senator Vanden have made here. I have no objections against this. However, I do have a question or two. Your proposal made it sounds like Bureau of Droid Interests and Protection only protects the sentient droids. What about the droids that aren't at least bit intelligent? Would this still protect them from cruelty and abuse? They wouldn't be aware of it, due to not being aware of pain or due to their programming being regularly receiving a memory wipe. I vote in favor. Tremaine Fowlkes, Senator of Mowgle

| It is no exaggeration that this measure, if passed, will shear through the very fabric of society like the wedge that it is. It also happens to be absurd. Droids are property, pure and simple. If they are sentient, it is sentience that we have programmed in them for specific purposes and interests—our purposes and interests, not "droid interests." To concede anything beyond this is to plunge the wedge deep into tens of thousands of years of precedent and principles upon which our society is ordered. This is a fact that is not acknowledged by the moronic droids rights movement and, frankly, not acknowledged in this measure either. I vote against.

| Even in this time of crisis, I am making the effort to give Corellia's judgements. While not on the level of Naboo, Corellia has also given its droids a certain degree of respect. I see nothing wrong with this piece of legislation. I vote In Favor.

| I vote in favour of granting greater rights to droids. Calibop already has extended many rights to droids (self ownership, property rights) and I would see this moved forward over time.

| Neimoidia votes against this because of the term droid. Droid applies only to mobile mechanical organisms, what about computers with sentiient AI?

| Droids are much the same as people in some regards. Let us not forget two heroes of the Rebellion, C-3PO and R2-D2. Fair treatment of droids seems well-advised to me. Druckenwell votes in favor.

| I think there are many sentient droids impatient for these new protections, Chief of State. I urge final passage of this measure, and may I suggest a signing ceremony in Monument Plaza which, as we know, was one of the foremost battle sites of the Great Droid Revolution? I do not mean to glorify that conflict, mind you, but rather to demonstrate how far we have come since then and to stress the historical significance of this legislation.
