It all happened so fast, the man slipping out the back of Aricia’s shop, the Trandoshans knocking roughly into him as they hurtled past, the moment of confused panic from the crowd as he fell to the ground, and the startled gasps turning rapidly into recognition as he stood again.

Carson noticed none of it; the cheery apologies from people that he’d smashed into, the desperate complaining of destitute souls to their government, and the lauding of those seeking nothing more than a nod that they could take home to their families. His eyes were inside the building, a mixture of fear and joy as his feet steered him towards his daughter.

All the commotion from outside diminished so that the light chink of metal on duracrete echoed loudly in his ears, and the gently swish-swish of the paper as it settle to the floor sounded like a wire brush on gravel against the silence in the room.

How long he stood there, within arm’s reach of Aricia, he could not count. He was aware, dimly, that the noise outside had abated, as if the crowd was collectively holding its breath in anticipation of his actions. Finally, lamely, he spoke.

“I…it’s…”
He fell silent and stood for another moment before stooping swiftly to retrieve his daughter’s dropped items. He did not look at them, but his hand jerked several times as he held it out, palm up, to Aricia.

Aricia would stand there in silence as she looked to him. She truly didn't know what to say and it was apparent that he did not either, he had began to speak but only a few words came out, that made no sense before heheld hishand out to her, the note and ring resting safely in his palm. She would reach out taking them from him, as she slipped the pair safely into her back pocket. And then there was more silence, neither of them speaking or moving. It seemed like forever, before Aricia took a step closer to him, before she wrapped her arms around him in a tight loving hug. It was the same hugs she use to give him when she would visit his office, but this one was longer and a tad tighter as she seemed to cling to his form. No words were spoken by her but her actions spoke much louder and truer than anything she could of said, as a little sniffle soon comes from her and a few tears land on his shirt.

To say that Jory was in rigid control of his emotion all the time was a bit of a stretch; he had been very near to loosing complete control of his anger in the Senate several times (and more so lately). But he never showed any other emotion besides that. At least until today.

As Aricia reached her arms around him he felt constriction in his throat, a kind of pain in his nose, and a slight tingle at the corner of his eyes. He cleared his throat several times to avoid breaking down in the store but despite his best efforts a single tear welled in his left eye and rolled down his long nose where it balanced for a few seconds before falling into her hair.

The silence was palpable, the actions meaning far more than any word could ever say but Jory felt that something needed said, after all, he had hardly talked to his daughter at all in several years. The problem was that he did not know what a father said to his daughter after so much silence, so many years of near total neglect.

As the stood there, locked in an emotional embrace he began to remember the day they met; he had very nearly lost her then. He could recall, with perfect clarity, how they had survived those first few weeks, he had seemed to think that pretending she did not exist would make things go better, at least until he realized that she was already pulling away. After that he had tried to take an active role in her life, of course he had never been a teenaged girl so relating to her was difficult at best.

His next move had been to find her a female role model; disastrous did not begin to describe how that idea went. Things finally started to work out when he started to pay attention to what she surrounded herself with: art. After he secured her a position in the Coruscant Academy of Art things started to go well and seemed to do so until she turned eighteen.

Perhaps it was her choice of boyfriends that started it all, but Carson knew the real reason was that he’d distanced himself from her when she started dating. It was fear that she’d pick someone that he’d never approve of, and the understanding that he’d never approve of whomever she chose. It was a decidedly irritating thing for a father to watch his daughter (even one that he’d only known for some three years) grow into an independent woman.

Still they stood, Carson stiffly, his daughter languid, and people had begun to stare. Something, or someone, had to break the silence, to move at least. A thousand things rushed to his mind, hundreds of apologies to make, hundreds of promises to reiterate. ‘I love you’ and ‘I’ve missed you’, or ‘I’ve been a fool’ among them, but they all vanished beneath the shame of having said all of them to himself at one point without ever picking up the comm. to call her.

Finally, after what could have been minutes, or hours, Carson stirred, a slight shifting of his feet and, without breaking the embrace, spoke.

“I have been thinking of leaving the Senate.”

Aricia would continue to cling to his form, he could call her the worst daughter in the galaxy and she would not let go of him at the moment as her arms stayed around him tightly, her head resting against his chest, then he spoke. Her eyes would remain closed as she wished they could just stay in that silence as she nodded her head for a moment "But its your life"

She had, as they say, ‘hit the nail on the head’; he loved his job and, consequently, put it above everything else in his life. At least he had loved it, before it came under new administration. Now there was little joy in it; he had finally joined the millions of ranks of beings that hated their jobs. Now, he went to work for nothing more than a paycheck and, exorbitant though that was it did little to console him for the fact that he was no longer able to make a better life for people.

He had allowed his job to rob him of the life he could have had years before too, when he was a mere soldier; Helen, his love, had been neglected ‘for a greater cause’. True, then he was ordered to do the job that he’d signed up for, true it needed done, true his efforts combined with that of millions of others had finally won freedom for the rebellion, but it had cost him a wife and a child.

Later he had devoted himself to the Senate so much that, when Aricia showed up he didn’t appreciate her the way he should have. She could have been his second chance. True, Helen was gone, but he’d gotten a glimmer of the ‘family life’ that he’d always dreamed about. He’d let that slip through his fingers as well. This time though, he was determined not to make the same mistake.

“I know,” he whispered softly into her hair. He held the embrace for a few moments more before gently unfolding himself. The crown outside had seemingly doubled in size and a few people actually had their faces pressed against the transparisteel so they could oggle the Senator in a rare moment of emotion. He cleared his throat again and glanced around the room.

“This is a nice place you’ve established here, I didn’t know that you…this is really amazing Aricia.” He completed his turn and returned his eyes to her. “You’ve grown up so much,” he said softly. “I wish I hadn’t missed it,” he finished, and he meant it.

Aricia didn't care who was watching as she hugged her father, until he pulled away from her. She would bring a hand up to her cheek to wipe away a few tears that had fallen from the corner of her eyes and had not landed on his wet and ruined fine starsilk shirt. Aricia knew how he felt about the Republic, about his job as Senator. She would never expect him to quit his job because of her and she had never asked him too nor would she ever. It was easier for her to just disappear and let him work, then to make him choose, and if she ever did think about making him, she had that fear he would pick his work over her.

Aricia would stand relaxed as Jory turned around, looking around the gallery, she would smile brightly looking with him nodding her head "Yep, took a lot of time and a lot of work, but I think its perfect" she would then give him a playful little smile "And now with you gracing us with your presence, I am sure more people will start to come in and buy pieces." A visit from a senator or any noble was a good thing for the little shops and galleries down there. It always brought in more business, even if for only a little while.

Her greenish eyes would fall upon him as she nods her head "I couldn't stop it, I wish I could of. I wish we could go back in time and change things" she would wrap her arms around herself, almost hugging herself. "We still have a lot of time left" she would smile or at least try to smile. They still had plenty of time to become what they once were and to stay that way. To be a family. A father and daughter again.

By the time she had finished speaking he was nodding his head absently; she was correct, there was a lot of time left for them to repair their relationship but, no he thought of it, how could they. What basis had they for even so little as a light conversation? He was wet, that was one small line of conversation, but not likely to entertain, or even hold attention for long.

What he wanted was to go home, shower and change, but he wanted Aricia to be there when he was done. And of course, he felt it something strange to ask her to return home with him when they had just reconnected. IF he could find a way to get her to meet him somewhere later, perhaps then they could rekindle their relationship.

It was about then that he remembered the reservations that he had made at Cou’ble’ with Meare, the latest woman in his life. Of course she had called that very afternoon to cancel on him. He thought perhaps it had to do with his pronounced ratings drop since Gavrisom had taken office. “It’s not my fault,” he muttered. He shook his head, not even realizing that he’d spoken aloud.

“So, I have some dinner reservations for seven tonight, if you’re interested?” He fumbled about for something more to say but the only thing that came to mind reminded him of his position within the dying New Republic. The only other thing he could think about was why he had perfectly good reservations for two that he was not using with another person. “I, uhh, need to go home and change first, of course, but I can give you the address and we could meet there…if you want,” he finished lamely. He did not know about the paper that Farland had given her, or that the times would collide.

Aricia would stand there for a moment looking tohim, just smiling. She knew there was a chance still, but he needed to want to try in order for it to work. She would frown slightly, hearing his voice,"I never said it was your fault father." she says softly,f rowning a bit, as she moved to take a step towards him but she would hestiate for a moment and just shifted her weight to that foot. So he was blaming himself, was that the reason why it had taken him so long to come down there? To find her?

Then he asked her to dinner, she would smile, though she could feel the ring weighing down her apron as she frowns slightly, "Umm...I would love to, but I kind of...already have plans for tonight." Farland better be worth this, worth not spending time with her father. Worth putting off fixing their relationship for one more day.

A tiny frown creased his brows before he could stop it but in a second his face was the smoothly modulated stoic expression everyone in the Senate saw. “I understand,” he said a bit too quickly. His eyes scanned the wall just to the left of her so that Jory could hide the hurt as he cast about for something to say.

“You’ve got plans with that bloke that was in here earlier?” He said jokingly in an attempt to diffuse the sudden tension. “What’d he have to do with the Trandoshins then?” He kept his voice casual although he could hear the elevated pitch in it; he hoped that she’d just forgotten exactly how he sounded and thus notice nothing out of the ordinary.

He could not help but to fidget though, and he found that he was drumming his hands on his thighs so he shoved them in his soaked coat pockets to stop their movement.

Aricia would see the little frown before he tried to hide it. She didn't want to upset him or hurt him. She couldn't help but frown as he looked around the gallery for a moment. She knew what he was doing, it was something that she had done many times when she had been disappointed in something he had said or had tried to do, especially when she was first living with him.

She would let out a sigh, her shoulders sinking for a moment as she nods her head "Actually, yes" she spoke softly. She was hopeful about this dinner date though she did not want to hurt her father, that was the last thing she ever wanted to do. She would try to smile to him "I'm not really sure though if you want to we could go out tomorrow night." she would flash him another smile "I will even dress up if you want, or you could come over to my place and I could make you dinner, if you wanted." She would smile a tad bit more. She was trying, she wanted to be around him, she wanted him to be part of the life. She would even move back in, if he wanted her to, so they could be a family.

His stony expression did not change but the Senator gave her a crisp nod. “So is he something of a trouble maker? Getting on the wrong end of a Trandoshan is not exactly difficult, but then again it’s not all that hard to keep one’s nose clean either. I don’t want to see you getting hurt in his games.” He stopped suddenly as though he had said too much.

“Forgive me; here I am trying to be all fatherly after having let you down for so long.” His smooth 'Senator' voice betrayed no emotion, almost as if he were giving a speach in fron of the Senate and his eyes again took on that distant look and he surveyed the paintings once more as if trying to find one he recognized in the collection.

“As far as dinner, don’t worry about it, there will be plenty of time later. Perhaps you can meet me in my office at, say, eighteen hundred hours tomorrow?”

Aricia would stand there for a moment a small smile touching her lips as he began to show worry about her but then the downer...she hated it when he acted like this, like he didn't have the right to act like her father when he did, she shared 13 chromosomes with him after all. "I will be careful daddy, promise. It is good for me to get out again, its been a long time." Not that he would know about that, he rarely kept up with her boyfriends when she lived with him. She tried to hard to hide them from him anyways. If he only knew about all the secrets she was hiding from him, secrets she feared him or anyone else knowing. if he knew about the scars that she carried on her heart and her arms.

Aricia would watch him look at the paintings behind her and off to the side, she would frown slightly. Her artwork had gone considerably darker over the years, one painting tucked far in a back corner that was barely visible, looked oddly like blood on a white canvas. She would take in a deep breath "Are you sure? It would be no problem to make dinner, but if you want....I can meet you at your office" she would smile again.

As usual the Senator was conflicted. He very much wanted to spend time with his daughter but he was terrified of being alone with her. How was he to act, what were they to talk about? Would she wonder why he’d not been around for several years? Would she tell him why she’d never come to him? Perhaps she would ask how his search for her mother’s killers was going.

None-the-less, though conflicted, he smiled thoroughly and genuinely. “I…if you prefer the comforts of your own home then assuredly I will make arrangements to meet you there.”

He had noticed the darker tone of her paintings though he refused to ruin the moment by pointing out her morbid scheme. Instead he made the remark about how wonderful the place was again, not knowing that in doing so he was likely overplaying the part.

Aricia would smile brightly "It's fine...I will meet you at your office, its been awhile since I have been up there" she would flash him a charming a little smile, as she lets out a happy little sigh, "I'm glad that you came in...I'm glad that...well I'm just glad you are here" she says softly, as her eyes start to tear up once again. She loved him, he was her father. It was an unconditional love that few would understand, she didn't at times and she knew that he would not either as she moves to wrap her arms around him once again. "So tomorrow at 7?" she asks, hopeful "At your office right?"

Try as he might there was no hiding the relaxing of his shoulders, a near slump, which was very odd for the Senator. The direction of the Senate was beginning to weigh on him, and it was beginning to show in his posture, as well as his face. But today was different, today he was in control.

Controlled did not always mean prepared though, and as she wrapped him up in another loving hug he found himself hesitating ever-so-slightly before mimicking her movement. He hoped that she’d not felt it. He was just so unsure of how things were supposed to be; he had never been a good father and he knew it. He had had never been there for her’ when she needed it, he had never provided her with anything other than money, and plenty of that to cover where he failed so to have her display such affection for him was astounding at best.

“Yeah,” he cleared his constricted throat again. “Tomorrow, at seven…or…if you wanted you could come earlier.”
