Economics Council Preliminary Hearing on the recent Defence Cuts their effects and projections

Preamble

Having passed the recent military cut-back legislation, the Economics Council investigates to better understand its economic effects.

Chapter summaries

The boost to the local economy: Pages 1-183

On many worlds we have observed a marked boost in the local economy, on Dantooine for example there is a large amount of agricultrual land, but a lack of local labor, as such many farmers have been employing half-pay soldiers to work on their farms. This has caused them to be able to open up new areas for farming.

The garrison on Eriadu has also been able to double as labor in the shipyard and space-port, lending their expertise to the local shipyards and port. This has allowed them to cut other workers overtime and so streamline the economic model.

The boost to the shipping market: Pages 184-342

Hundreds of former commercial pilots have come to the market and are either retiring to return to jobs with civilian shippers and state shipping companies, putting some of the best commercial fliers back on the market. This has resulted in the cost of transport falling as new companies are set up and the tonange of the merchant fleet expands. Resulting in widespread economic benefits for export economies, which has in turn increased exports and produced more work.

The boost to the New Republic Budget: Pages 343-539

The effects of the cuts have been massive, with the colossal reduction in costs from the New Republic Defense force the New Republic is projected to run up a prodigious budget-surplus. This will allow the New Republic to channel funds into the finance of new projects, or indeed a cut in tax.

Testimonies of retired personnel: Pages 540-600

The vast majority of which relate stories of personnel returning to their families after years at war, or setting up new businesses, returing to old jobs and revitalising local economies.

Testimonies of personnel on half-pay: Pages 601-700

In this case, while some personnel disprove of the pay cut (notably those who refuse to seek extra work), many more are indeed in favour of this as they have been able to take out considerably higher paid civilian work, or spend much more leisure time. Others have taken the advantage of the education opportunities made avalible and began study on advanced degrees, allowing them to integrate smoothly into the private sector when their terms end. One team (a team of Mon Calamari, posted to Naboo), have begun to plan an expedition (with private funding from the Kruus foundation) to be the first to transverse the Otoh Gunga-Theed route without a vehicle.

Conclusion Pages 701-807

While there may be some initial protest at the pay cuts, the bulk of personnel do indeed see the vast benefit to the cut in pay allowing them to pursue extra work and have reacted very well. Discharged personnel have in most cases hit the ground running and contributed to local economies. There has been an economic benefit to the cuts on all levels, from that to the individual men and women involed, through to the Galactic Economy as a whole.
