A Respectful Parley with the Senate

Senators, I am a man of few words so you must forgive me for speaking briefly, and plainly. However, there have been many words directed at Mandalore in recent months, many of them disparaging, rude, and provocative, from members of this Senate. I would be remiss if I did not correct these, in the name of my people. For indeed, I do speak for my people. Zuthus Bralor, a well meaning man of tremendous honor, has stood down as the leader, or Mand'alor, of the Mandalorian people. I, Fenn Shysa, have replaced him. Many of you know me—I have fought with the Rebellion and with the Republic for decades, as have many of my people. Mandalore has been a friend of the Republic and the Republic has been a friend in kind; we may disagree from time to time, as friends do, but we do not wish to diminish our relationship. I know that the Republic does not wish this either.

But there is no question that in recent months, this relationship has been in doubt. This has been a time of change for us all. Mandalore has strayed from some of its values, it is true, but so too has the Republic and, no longer bound by a common enemy, it appears that we have strayed in opposite directions. We do have differences. Some of them cannot be reconciled, but some of them—many of them—can. I will discuss these, briefly. And since this is a time of change, it requires that we change with it. I will discuss then, also, some of the changes that I am making as Manda'lor which have been discussed and agreed to by my people.

Mandalore's first and foremost concern is for peace in its Sector. We do not seek to "rule" the Mandalore Sector, as certain Senators have said, but rather to protect it. We have communicated this to the government of Kalevala, and they have agreed to a permanent peace with us; we have recognized Kalevala as a free and independent world, and invited it to discuss with us the founding of a formal Sector government, and in exchange, Kalevala has joined with us and with its neighbors in signing a treaty legitimizing the Mandalorian Protectors as the guarantors of peace, security, and stability in the Mandalore Sector.

The "crisis," Senators, is over.

And so is slavery on Mandalore. Slavery is reprehensible. It was wrong when the Empire did it to my people, and it is wrong now and always. However, it must be clarified; what has happened on Mandalore over these last decades was not "slavery." It has not been at all how it is portrayed in a certain, recent work of fiction. Mandalore captured many Imperial soldiers in its war of independence. These soldiers were held as prisoners of war, and prisoners of war can be employed for the purposes of labor. However, it is very true that these soldiers have been held for far too long. Years too long.

Many of them have already been released. As of now, there are fewer than one thousand. I have ordered that these, too, shall be released. Now, twenty years after the Empire enslaved the Mandalorian people, or Mando'ade, we can say once and for all that there is no more slavery on Mandalore.

Some things, however, will not change. There is a phrase in my language—Mando'ad draar digu—that means "a Mandalorian never forgets." We are not willing to forget what the Empire has done to us, and we are certainly not willing to forgive it. The Republic has made peace with the Empire, and while we do not agree with this, we respect it. We will not make peace with the Empire, and we ask that you respect this though you may disagree with it. You have offered to mediate "discussions" and "negotiations" with the Empire. We respectfully decline this mediation; Mandalore will speak on its own behalf, Senators.

Dar'tome, in my language, means "no longer together." I have told the people of Mandalore, the people of Kalevala, and now you that these times require unity, not division. Tome, not dar'tome. Mandalore and the Republic are not united by a common enemy, it is true. But we are united by a common history, a common experience, and many common goals. There is a verb, atiniir, which means "to endure," or "to tough it out." We are committed, if the Republic is, to tough out our differences so that our relationship may endure. With proper respect and proper distance, there is no reason why we cannot remain friends, and allies.

Mandalore, although it is a sad fact that I must, I welcome you into the Senate, and thank you for coming here today. I do not hold it against you being a man of few words, for most that are, get to the point and don't talk you out of your own name. Your people have certainly been a source of some debate, as you have noticed, and it is unfortunate that our relationship has indeed been strained. Despite that, it is my personal hope that we repair our relationship and continue the great bond the Old Republic never enjoyed with you. I am glad that you came to a resolution of your problems in your sector on your own, rather than requiring an interventionist solution that neither side truely wanted, but none the less would have happened should things have gone on the path to war. I appraise you as well, for your abolition of slavery. I have spoken of the need to rid the galaxy of it once and for all, and I'm glad your people also did this on your own. Now, while you are free to act as you see fit on foreign policy, not being a member of the New Republic, I do encourage you to come to peace with the Remnant and embrace the age of peace and calm that is descending upon the galaxy.
