"Perhaps our ignorance of each other's nature and ways is what makes it appear that we are falling into a black hole of conflict. I would enlighten you and learn from you."
―The words of Senator Elegos A'Kla (a friend of Variteks), which summarize the Jedi's own convictions.

Jace Varitek
Jedi Knight and Consular

NAME: Jace Varitek
AGE: 28 Standard Years
HOMEWORLD: Metellos

SPECIES: Human
HEIGHT: 1.8 Meters
WEIGHT: 179 lbs.
EYES: Blue
HAIR: Light Brown

AFFILIATION: Jedi Order, New Republic
TITLE: Jedi Knight (Consular)
FORCE: Proficient (esp. Meditation, Empathy, Speed)
VEHICLE(S): T-65BR "X-wing" Starfighter
WEAPON(S): Lightsaber, Model 44 Blaster Pistol

BACKGROUND:
"The Force is strong with you, boy," said a mysterious and haggardly woman to Jace Varitek upon meeting him as a child, "You'll make a fine Jedi some day." Varitek was ten at the time; he had only vague and romantic notions about what a "Jedi" was, and soon forgot the encounter altogether. Little could he have known then how prescient the woman was.

Jace Varitek was born on Metellos (colloquially known as "the Coruscant that wasn't," because of its dense population, pollution and squalor) in 17 BBY, during the height of the Empire. He was bitter as a teenager, and resentful of the floating cities in the skies above his homeworld, constructed by the rich to escape the blight of the planet's crowded stratoblocks. Persecuted for his class, the young Varitek would often empathize with those persecuted for their species, and he was known to associate with aliens and other minorities that the Empire had deemed undesirable (doing no favors for his own popularity in the process). It was thus that he came to believe firmly in the rule of law as an instrument to protect the disenfranchised, but recognized that the Empire was not ruled by law, but rather by men, and the unjust laws of their own design.

When Varitek was later involved in a fist fight with student members of COMPNOR (which he lost), he was promptly expelled from school and, disgusted, decided the time was right to leave his blighted homeworld and broaden his horizons. He packed his few belongings and traveled to the planet Kerilt, to volunteer at the Caamasi refugee colony of Morymento (the planet Caamas itself having been destroyed by the Empire a decade earlier, leaving only a handful of survivors).

Seeing firsthand the devastation of Caamas and the condition inflicted on the Caamasi people only reinforced Varitek’s growing hatred of the Empire, but he also learned from the refugees―among them his new and closest friend, Eeshrin―the Caamasi philosophies of pacifism, compassion and pragmatism, which he would soon apply to his own life. It was while at Morymento that Jace learned basic engineering and piloting skills, for the maintenance of the colony and its farms. He would also discover, to his astonishment, that he shared a unique Caamasi ability to share with each other vivid, emotional memories, called memnii. It was said in ancient lore that only Caamasi and Jedi could percieve this phenomenon, instilling in Varitek a curiosity about the old Jedi Order.

Determined to know more about the Jedi than the standard, Imperial propaganda, Jace bid farewell to Morymento and boarded a passenger liner for Alderaan, whose Royal Library was rumored to have a breadth of information on both the Jedi and the destruction of Caamas, and where Varitek would meet up with his friend Eeshrin, who had traveled to Alderaan's Caamasi settlement a month before. But Varitek would never arrive; when word of the destruction of Alderaan reached the liner, it was diverted to Coruscant (then called "Imperial Center"), where Varitek was left to come to terms with the loss of an entire planet, and his closest friend.

If the Empire was willing to destroy a world of pacifists, Varitek reasoned, then the Caamasi philosophy of pacifism alone would not be enough to deter it; the Empire had to be resisted, he decided, and with violence if necessary. Reluctantly abandoning his search for Jedi knowledge, Varitek now wanted desperately to join the fledgling Rebel Alliance, but didn't know how (Coruscant was, at the time, a world much restrained and disinclined to rebellion). Resolved to resist the Empire however he could, he soon hired on as a pilot for the Cosmohaul Shipping Company; over the next three years, he would travel from one world to the next, quietly using his company freighter to smuggle fugitives, weapons and medical supplies to resistance groups on worlds like Contruum and Ralltiir. Cosmohaul would become suspicious of their pilot's late or missing shipments, however, and eventually reported him to the Imperial Security Bureau, which summarily arrested Varitek on Borleias.

His months of imprisonment would be the worst of his life, during which he fell into a depression and despaired at what he regarded as a lack of accomplishment or purpose in his life, and his impotence against the Empire. But much changed during his captivity: the Empire was defeated at Endor, the New Republic was founded, and soon Borleias itself was freed and Varitek promptly released. Seeking a sense of direction for himself, he resumed his pursuit of knowledge of the Jedi teachings and returned to a now liberated Coruscant to browse its famed libraries and museums. He would not find much information about the Jedi, but he continued his education regardless and soon studied sentientology at the University of Coruscant. Upon his graduation in 10 ABY, he decided to return to the comfort and counsel of Morymento for the first time in a decade, where he resumed his relief work at the colony and was reunited with his old Caamasi friends.

It was they who would convince Varitek to enlist in the newly formed Jedi Academy, though in fact he needed little convincing. In 11 ABY, he would depart Morymento once again on a search for Jedi knowledge, but this time he would finally find it, and his life would be forever changed. After a series of tests and mental trials, Varitek was admitted to the Academy and would soon excel in his training, particularly in the fields of diplomacy and history; he would often spend hours immersed in the Academy’s records, and as a result he was frequently dispatched to negotiate the return of, or otherwise recover ancient artifacts on worlds such as Dantooine and Telos. Now a Jedi Knight at age 28, Varitek is known for his calm and deliberate demeanor in both combat and mediation, although the seriousness with which he regards his studies is often mistaken for disinterest in his fellow students at the Academy, and he has few close friends there as a result.

Varitek is most proficient with meditation and empathy; rather than considering the Force as a tool or weapon, the Jedi Knight instead regards it primarily as a means of greater understanding of himself and his surroundings, and applies the Force more to his studies than to combat. He also considers the potential power of the Force a profound responsibility, to be used not for curiosity or convenience, but to uphold the rule of law. While he is respectable with a lightsaber, he is rather a more defensive fighter who prefers the versatility of a blaster pistol (though as a rule, he keeps his Model 44 set to stun except in the direst of circumstances).
