Background

Born to parents who dealt in smuggling, Deven was brought up on Tatooine, in relative comfort. Due to the profession his parents followed, the young boy often was able to sort through a myriad of different items from all corners of the galaxy, as well as rub shoulders with some of the less-reputable beings who frequented Tatooine's dive bars and shops. Growing up with little sense of childhood fun or enjoyment, Deven showed a great aptitude for sadism at a very early age, torturing womp rats who belonged to citizens of Mos Eisley. By the age of sixteen, this sadism manifested itself as outright murder as Deven began to prey upon the down-and-out in the various bars after dark. Each time, it seemed as if a sixth sense was telling him when he would be caught; an exhibition of early Force-related talents, though he did not know at the time.

By the age of twenty-two, Deven was working part-time as a swoop mechanic and supplementing his funds with credits taken from the various victims who became subject to his odd experiments. It was quite safe to say that Deven might well have gone on to follow in the footsteps of Cornelius Evazan and try his hand at mad doctoring if he hadn't been found by Darth Novak. It was a happenstance meeting, brought on by the loss of one of the Dark Lord's vessels on Tatooine's surface. Derek happened to be in the right place at the right time. Recognizing one Force-sensitive easily, Darth Novak offered him the choice of adventure, wealth and, better yet, the chance to use his talents for a greater cause and at great length. It was no contest for Deven, who otherwise would likely have been doomed to remain forever on the desert world.

In the time between the gathering of Novak's fleet and travel to Druckenwell, the Sith put his new apprentice through various rigorous training schedules, practically working the younger man to the point of exhaustion. Nonetheless, Deven survived and persisted, going on to craft his own pair of lightsabers (though he secretly coveted the pair of Makashi-styled lightsabers Novak possessed). Now, he serves as the right hand of the Sith Lord.

In the course of his time with Novak, Deven ran afoul of a band of rather zealous Ewoks on Endor, resulting in the loss of an arm (later to be replaced by a lightclub) and his capture and imprisonment for nine years by the Republic. Now released, Deven is, with Novak's death over Druckenwell, the sole surviving heir to his legacy and owner of perhaps the last of Novak's holocrons. After his release, Deven was last seen heading for the Outer Rim.
