Background: Mercutio, the recently elected monarch of Naboo, is the first man to hold the position since the abdication of King Veruna over half a century ago. In 19 ABY, Mercutio replaced the retiring Queen Kylantha, whose court had become increasingly regarded as decadent, ineffectual, embroiled in scandal and intrigue, and enamored of the status quo. He campaigned on a promise to restore the prestige of the monarchy, and also to restore term limits, guarantee a living wage for all subjects (including Gungan laborers), to involve them in political decisions, to establish a recall procedure for politicians and limits on immigration, and to lower tariffs and port fees.

He has been married and divorced three times, and is considered something of a womanizer, frequently entertaining potential consorts at his private retreat in the mountains outside of Theed near his ancestral home of Ferentina. He is also far more conspicuous in galactic politics than his predecessors; he is known to travel to Coruscant often, ostensibly to consult with other politicians, though he has also become something of a fixture on the capital's social scene. Despite this reputation, he is serious and passionate about his politics. He supports the New Republic's peace treaty with the Remnant, and considers it an opportunity to promote Naboo's pacifist ideals to the wider galaxy.
