Background:
It has been said that the Pentastar Alignment is very much a microcosm of the "old Empire," in that its fleet is steeped in decades of naval tradition and aristocracy, and its officers are men of refinement. No one illustrates the point more so than Clive Heller, a son and heir of the Hellering family nobility, gentleman, and Captain of the picket cruiser Marathon. He is engaged to marry the daughter of Grand Moff Ardus Kaine, and was widely regarded as the Moff's potential, eventual successor.
After Kaine's recent death, however, Heller was considered, instead, a potential threat to the new leadership; thus he remains a mere Captain despite a long promised promotion. Nonetheless, he is popular among his colleagues, his opinions are sought and respected, and he is known to command the time and attention of even his superiors.
Heller is a thinking man, who shared Moff Kaine's fervency and dedication to the Empire until the Moff's death, which has caused him to (privately) question whether the Remnant might not be on the wrong side of history. His doubt, however, and Kaine's death in reluctant service to the Reborn Emperor's wanton conquests, has only further affirmed his dedication to the Pentastar Alignment, which has long been moderate and independent of the other Imperial factions.
For now, he remains steadfast from the bridge of the Marathon, offering his counsel to the Alignment's leaders and tentatively hoping one day to succeed them.
