Like the topic has mentioned above...Happy Veterans Day. Instead of the usual complaining I've heard toward our troops, we should honor those who has served our country/are still serving our country. Salut to Havoc and whoever's a soldier RL here on the site.

I can't speak for anyone but myself, obviously, but I've never heard any complaining about our troops, rather I've heard negative sentiment towards the fact that they've been deployed to two rather questionable wars (let's not get into that, though). But I do agree that those who do serve deserve to be honored, so Havoc, Rath, whoever else might be military, your service is appreciated.

On my behalf, I can't accept anyone's thanks. Joining the Army is something that is somewhat a family tradition, and we all have paid for freedom of America. So I appreciate it, but really, I'm just doing my job.

I hear you, Karth. I think the merit of these wars is something that has to be assessed with the benefit of distance and time, as it is with war. For now, there's not a lot that me or anyone else who hasn't been there can say, without the experiences that Havoc, Kal, especially Adam, etc. have had of these times and places. But I do feel comfortable saying that there's something enormously noble about putting yourself in danger for the freedom of someone else. "Freedom" is a word I use hesitantly, because it's so often used as a platitude. If I were in the position of Havoc, Adam, or Kal, I think I'd have an urge to slap anyone who told me I was fighting "for our freedom." What's really on the line here, obviously, is the freedom of a lot innocent Afghan people who have too long been the victims of mad Islamist tyranny, to say nothing of poor education, no economic opportunity, etc.

I'm not saying it is or isn't the U.S.'s responsibility to defend the freedom of Afghans, and I'm not saying that is or isn't the point of the war. That is, I'm not inviting a debate about the war in Afghanistan on this day, of all days. What I am saying is that because of the presence of U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, there are girls who are in school today who wouldn't be otherwise, and women who haven't been stoned to death who would have been otherwise. Who can know the number of lashings, beatings, gruesome executions that haven't happened? This has been the reality of this place at this time, and regardless of the politics of these wars and how the perception of them may change over time, I think this is something the Havocs, Kals, and Adams of this generation can be proud of, and so can all of us—and should, in my opinion.

Anyway, that's all I got on that. And I didn't want to seem specific to the U.S., incidentally (we're not the only nation in Afghanistan or Iraq). I think Jamie is technically some sort of military figure now? Not quite what I was getting at, but hey, happy Veteran's Day to us all.
