Aeeq is Destroyed as Worlds Collide
Chommell Sector, Mid Rim — Storied millenia of life on Aeeq have come to a spectacular end as the planet's atmosphere and biosphere have been destroyed in the cataclysmic collision of the planet with a "rogue planetoid," which astronomers had anticipated for months and which was witnessed throughout the Chommell Sector and detected as far away as Enarc. The people of Aeeq had been warned of the collision in advance, and many are believed to have abandoned the planet prior to its destruction.
Aeeq (pronounced "ay eek") was a small, water-covered planet and tourist destination located not far from Naboo, and was home to the sentient Avareeq humanoids. Prior to the collision with the "rogue planetoid," Aeeq was mostly covered by a large ocean with a few small landmasses, volcanic islands, and innumerable archipelagoes. The planet's population was 1 billion, and its cities, including its stately capital, Baaqibura, were built in shallow lagoons on stilts with canals being the main source of transportation. Much of the planet's landmass was either used for farming or was protected as a nature preserve.
With the planet's oceans having been seared away and the planet itself ruptured to its magmatic interior, never again will be glimpsed the beautiful architecture and canals of Baaqibura, and its vast nature preserves ultimately proved no more a refuge for wildlife than the doomed planet was to its people.
Months ago, when astronomers calculated that the "rogue planetoid" would indeed collide with Aeeq, the peaceful and prosperous planet was beset with panic. Aeeq's ruling jar-Address dynasty, which has ruled the planet for over 1,000 years, descended into political infighting over the expatriation of the Aeeq's resources and was unable to put together an evacuation plan. The situation was complicated when the planet Anaxes blockaded Aeeq, ostensibly in protest of an unrelated dispute at Monor II some months prior. The blockade "confiscated" bank vaults and other valuables and impeded traffic to and from Aeeq, including Avareeq and other residents attempting to flee the imminent collision of the "rogue planetoid."
Aeeq's predicament went largely unnoticed in the rest of a galaxy preoccupied with disputes at Monor II, Embaril, and other worlds, and embroiled in debate over capital ships legislation and other contentious issues. Aeeq's senator, Dierna Chakrei, never protested Anaxes' blockade of her world or requested the Empire's assistance—possibly because of the political paralysis that had gripped Aeeq's government. As a consequence, a number of Avareeq and other residents of the planet are believed to have perished along with their world and its thousands of years of history.
The Coruscant Journal was unable to reach Senator Chakrei for comment. Her office on Coruscant confided that they didn't know where the Senator was and hadn't known for some time. What will become of those who survived the destruction of Aeeq remains to be seen, as many look for new places to live. The survivors, wracked with grief, seem also to have a sense of betrayal; that the government of Aeeq as well as the Empire and all of its worlds failed them in their hour of need.
