Aurelius Elected Senator of Tammuz Sector
Tammuz-an, Outer Rim Territories — Augusta Aurelius, wife of the King of Deralia, has been narrowly-elected Senator of the Tammuz Sector in a surprise victory. Aurelius had been the acting Senator of the Tammuz Sector who attempted to defend Deralia's reputation from a disastrous, aborted war with little-known agriworld Dantooine. Aurelius, the candidate from Deralia, an unpopular world in its Sector, hadn't been expected to win the election, but did so with a plurality of 37% of the vote to her nearest challenger's 25%.
Vilish Galt, a favored candidate from Tammuz-an, had withdrawn from the race and spoken sympathetically of Aurelius—this is believed to have tipped the opinion of the sector's Tammuz minority in her favor. Other candidates, including Zhalghast Thanda of Chuzalla, advocated unpopular, pro-slavery positions. Aurelius campaigned against the increased taxes of Moff Simon Levi and "the encroachment of the Hutts" in the Tammuz Sector.
Her first act as the newly-elected Senator of the Tammuz Sector, however, was to deliver what has been widely-seen as a Deralia-centric victory speech referring to Deralia as a "unique culture," extolling the planet's unpopular military, and calling for a separate Senator of Deralia on equal terms with a Senator of the Tammuz Sector. The speech, delivered on Tammuz-an and broadcast throughout the Sector, was well-received on Deralia but less so on the other worlds of the sector.
"It was intended to appeal to the rest of the sector," Vilish Galt told The Coruscant Journal in Senator Aurelia's defense, "She announced she was stepping down as the Queen of Deralia so she could serve the Tammuz Sector full-time, and said that it's time to move forward as a sector. I think this is encouraging language from a Deralian." Asked whether he supported a separate seat for Deralia, however, Galt responded: "No, I do not. [Aurelius] was elected Senator of the Tammuz Sector and she's expected to represent all of the Tammuz Sector."
"Deralia is no more important than any planet of the sector," Galt added.
Going forward, Augusta Aurelius' task will be to win over a sector that remains skeptical of Deralia's military ambitions in the region and combat the widespread belief in the Tammuz Sector that Deralian senators—namely former Senator Titus Veritas and Augusta Aurelius herself—have represented Deralia only. The people of her sector, who oppose slavery, fear the growing threat of piracy, and chafe under Moff Levi's taxation scheme, will no doubt closely watch her progress on these issues in the Senate.
