The Ares family is a commoner family on Deralia, regardless however, it is a name synonymous with service in the surface forces of the galactic government and planetary government, known to advance on to battlefield of politics after the conclusion of a full military career. Throughout his life, however, he had to fight for notability among swarms of nobles who were given preferential treatment, training, influence, and standing. Rather than resent the nobility for this, he views it as a fight that made him stronger.

He impressed his instructors with his ferocity and resiliance, as well as his viewpoints on warfare, military service, and the role of the military in general. The accomplishment causes reforms to be enacted on Deralia to enable commoner military talent the ability to move on to galactic-level academies alongside their noble counterparts.
• Ultimately, Iago decides to serve in the Republic Army. He is assigned to the Recon Commandos, descendants of notable mercenary units enlisted by the Republic in times of war and the Republic Troopers of the Great Galactic War. He is assigned to the Outland Regions Security Force, working directly with Jedi in the area. His unit is also deployed every other year, for five months, with the Special Task Force.

• Despite a brilliant, highly decorated career, he suddenly resigns his commission in the Judicial Forces, in order to join Senator Ranulph Tarkin's paramilitary force. He was tasked by Ranulph Tarkin personally, to form a team to be a model for the future Republic Special Forces. He did so, modelling it after Havoc Squadron, the Republic's premier Special Forces unit of the Great Galactic War and Cold War.
• He remember Ranolph Tarkin warmly, working intimately with the Senator during the formative phase of his military force, "It was as if I had gained a second father. I understood everything he said, and why; his actions, his ideals, his dreams,". Tarkin, did so in turn, seemingly viewing him as something of a son. Tarkin attempts to set-up a marriage between Iago and Shayla Paige-Tarkin, which the two agree to; their marriage, however, is postponed due to the move on Qotile.
• He recalls the massive battle on Mount Avos, vividly, "We were hit by electronic warfare before we had even deployed. Only a third of our forces made it into orbit... and only a quarter of that made it to the surface. What should have been a resounding victory, turned into a desparate battle. I was tasked to operate closely with the Jedi, with each of the members of my team and I taking a squad of our best remaining soldier, teaming up with a Jedi, and fought to merely give us time to regroup and figure out what the hell to do. Ultimately, the enemy horde was too much, and we had to retreat into the mountain itself."
• During the Second Battle of Qotile, he worked closely with General-Jedi Plo Koon, relaying his telepathy gained intelligence, along with several other varied officer, who use the information to plan their defensive tactics. They jokingly refer to themselves as the "Senate Bureau of Intelligence Force Intelligence Department". He would later write several letters remarking upon the proven effectiveness of Force-based intelligence gathering. These papers, among many other factors, would motivate the foundation of the Inquisitorious, and its placement under the authority of Imperial Intellgence during the founding of the Empire.
• During the Third Battle of Qotile, he helps formulate and execute an feint breakout offensive to the Stark Collective's siege of Mount Avos, to allow several Jedi, Senators, and a Judicial pilot sneak out of the fight and make their way to Coruscant to gain reinforcements. He is wounded, in the course of the battle, and is forced to sit out the Fourth Battle of Qotile in the makeshift field hospital.
• He is ultimately unable to contribute to the Fifth Battle of Qotile due to his injuries. Despite rumors to the contrary, he views Ranulph Tarkin as a hero for sacrificing himself in order to eliminate the Stark Combine forces. Upon the conclusion of the Stark Hyperspace War, and the healing of his wounds, he finds himself unable to re-join the Judicial Forces. After spending some time with his fiance, Shayla Paige-Tarkin, he decides to join the Senate Guard while she takes on Ranulph Tarkin's vacated Senate seat.

• After years of spending time together, Iago and Shayla find themselves drifting apart from one another due to their duties. After some time of intense consideration, they break off their engagement and end their relationship, remaining good friends for the rest of their lives. He eventually reunites with his secondary school sweetheart, and childhood friend, Sebastiana Giance, marrying and having two children. In his career as a Guardsman, he is able to rise into the Senate Commandos, obtaining the rank of Captain.

• Following accusations of corruption, and an assassination attempt upon Supreme Chancellor Palpatine committed through the Senate Guard itself, the Red Guard is formed, as the elite bodyguards of the Supreme Chancellor. His unit in the Senate Commandos is first group of Red Guard recruits. He is tasked with the formation, organization, operational standards, and training of the Red Guard, becoming Captain of the Red Guard. Upon this accomplishment, he relocates his family to Coruscant.

• After leading the Red Guard for over ten years, he is one of a few well regarded a reknown military officers chosen for service as Generals, in counter to the Jedi and Clones. He is tapped to work with General Jedi Master Vernon Daine on the organization and training of birth-born forces to serve in the Grand Army of the Republic. Following their successful implementation in the next year, he would then work with General Jedi Knight Rukh, in forming and training birth-born recruits to serve in the expanding Special Operations Brigade. In between, he is known to serve in the battlefields, participating in the Battle of Iktotch and the Battle of Christophsis (which saw the first actual deployment of birth-born forces, in relieving the exhausted Clone forces following the main battle, and moping up enemy forces on the world) along with several smaller skirmishes, as well as having partial oversight of the Kamino Defensive Strategy and attempting to come up with a special operations mission to take out the Malevolence, before its defeat at the hands of General Skywalker. He was slated to be in command of the Republic deployment to Mandalore, in the largest deployment of birth-born forces yet seen and as a springboard for a larger Republic offensive, but is denied the accomplishment.
• On top of his other duties, he aids in the reorganization of Republic Intelligence into Military Intelligence, in order to better operate as a war-fighting intelligence agency, and better integrate itself with the Senate Bureau of Intelligence. It is this reorganization, and Armand Isard's obsessive-compulsive organizational tendancies, that would lead to the largely military organization and ranking of Imperial Intelligence.

• Sees himself and the bulk of the Republic's birth-born forces assigned to the defense of the Core in response to Operation Durge's Lance. A year sent largely inactive, he views the shift of birth-born forces into a largely defense posture one of the reasons their participation in the war is left largely unnoted. Despite the defensive role, he, and the several birth-born Generals, find themselves acting in dual roles as consultants and attachés from Republic High Command to the various Jed Generals, offering strategic and tactical advice from afar. • Since becoming a well-known war hero, of now two wars, and a symbol of the birth-born contribution to the Republic's war effort, he is chosen personally by Chancellor Palpatine to be one of the first Sector Governors of the Republic, taking control of his home sector, the Tammuz Sector. Various machinations delay his assuming of the office until the next year, the now being granted to new rank of Moff as well. He leads a crusade in ensuring no Separatist holdouts take route in the sector, as well as ridding it of Hutt influence. After the formation of the Imperial Army, he becomes known as the "Grandfather of the Imperial Army", having helped trained most of its essential officers.

• Following several successful years, he is replaced as Sector Governor by Moff Leonhardt and reassigned as the head of Imperial Munitions, the Empire's national arms manufacturer. He remarks that the only thing left unaccomplished in his tenure is bringing about a solution of the problem of piracy in his sector, a problem that while reduced under him, explodes under Leonhardt, causing his eventual replacement by Simon Levi.

• He oversees the military campaign on Renatasia, following its initiation, commanding until the very end. Despite the heavy losses incurred, he is celebrated as the iron will behind the Empire prevailing in the challenging campaign. He uses the heavy losses to argue, successfully, for further training of birth-born recruits, expansion and reform of the Imperial Army, and is ultimately one of many driving forces behind the Empire planning to allow birth-borns into the Stormtrooper Corps in 9 BBY. He says of the campaign, "Were birth-borns more battle-tested, rather than an over-reliance upon Clones, the campaign might have become more successful. However, this was the Clone Wars of the birth-born soldier... this was the war to bring about veteran leadership. This is a campaign that will ultimately reshape the Imperial military."
• Following Renatasia, he is appointed head of the Imperial Department of Military Research, working closely with his good friend's, Ranulph Tarkin, cousin, Wilhuff Tarkin, as well as the likes of Moff Rebus, General Rom Mohc, and Admiral Demetrius Zaarin.

• When the Emperor decides to finally implement his Oversector strategy, he is the second Grand Moff appointed, behind his good associate Wilhuff Tarkin, taking command of the Triellus Oversector. He is tasked with containing the Hutts, and ultimately bringing them to heel and in-line with the Empire. While not part of his Oversector, he is given principle control of Hutt Space through the Empire's sectors that existed practically in name only within Hutt Space.
