History
The Special Actions Group is the Empire's Tier One Special Operations unit, born from the cancelled experimental Project GHOST, which tested the addition of a fourth battalion to all currently standing Special Forces Groups, consisting of cross-trained personnel capable of any job assignment or operation. While found to be impractical and too costly for general deployment, increasing need for special forces capable of responding to any crisis, at any time, anywhere, had become clear to the Special Operations Command and the Army as a whole. In addition, the success and abilities of the "Ghosts", as they had come to be called, were undeniable in the wake of the Droid Revolt on Imperial Center.

For the first known time since the Great Galactic War, a Tier One asset was to be fielded by the galactic government. Formed around the current members of the "Ghosts", and those in training for the unit, the Special Actions Group was official formed, under command of their field commander, now Major, Orion Karath. Still known as "Ghosts" to those aware of their existence and involved with their former operations, and otherwise known as simply "The Unit" to all newcomers; their operations are now largely classified Top Secret or Above Top Secret.

Their identities are unknown to all but those in direct supervision of the unit, specifically the Navy and Army attaches to High Command, the Supreme Commander, the Executor, the Grand Vizier, and the Emperor himself; while order tasking is largely relegated to High Command, they fall under the direct command of the Emperor. Publicly, and privately to even spouses, they operate under the guise of the 502nd Logistical Studies Unit, a special unit devised to bring together personnel from every aspect of the military in order to better coordination, joint operations, and logistical coverage of said operations; it is of note that immediate family is allowed to known the true nature of the unit, but said family member must be sworn to absolute secrecy, violation of which will result in the immediate termination of the related operator from the unit, and could be punishable for operator and/or family, up to an including execution. In the field, they are known to go by the cover of the Combat Applications Group (in presence of other Special Operations forces), Special Operations Detachment D-66 and Task Force 965. Non-Official Covers, for operations requiring non-uniformed appearance, are Beckwith Services, Haney Security Group, Gordon Risk Control and Shugart Intergalactic, usually under the guise of being PMCs.

To be even considered for entry into the Special Actions Group, one must be thirty or younger, an Imperial citizen, have a secondary school diploma, have the maximum possible military aptitude test score, qualify for top secret security clearance, have the maximum possible score on the military physical fitness test, and be a member of either the Commandos or Special Missions Troopers. Fulfilling the requirement, as with the Commandos, is not enough. A rigorous selection process is undertaken, throughout the galaxy. Those are selected go on to training, which one must fully complete in order to become part of the unit. Any form of being dropped, being voluntary, forced, or medical, forever disqualifies the individual from the unit.

Of note is its unique support units, all of which were developed during Project GHOST. For example, the 158th Special Operations Flight Group (originally Squadron) is a unit of ace pilots trained to fly transports that have been modified to the specifications of the Special Actions Groups, including unique craft. While these craft are transports, all pilots are certified combat fighter pilots, all of whom have achieved Ace status, and have served as training instructors. They are chosen, rather than transport pilots, for the very reason that they can take their transports beyond their limits and fly them like fighters, being more willing to conduct maneuveres and operations that transport pilots would deem too risky, if not outright suicidal. For their select craft, the pilots have hand-picked their own crews, down to the ground crew.

Upon formation, the Special Actions Group was granted the heraldry of Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group. Of note is that while the cross-trained specialist concept was removed, the Empire has chosen to proceed to add a fourth Company to all Special Forces Battalions; it was deemed that since a majority of the personnel attached to the original Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Special Forces Group were transferred into the Special Actions Group, they deserved to retain their decorations as a unit.
