The Oriel-Fowlkes Deralian Chastisement Act

King Deralius of Deralia has caused a massive (although temporary) destabilisation of the Outer Rim economies, his administration threatened a major disruption of food supplies, on which many worlds depend.

This is an act to chide Deralia for its aggression and to guide it to return to the Imperial norm.

1. Deralia is to be inspected to assure its military complies with all current guidelines right away, and then every 6 months for three years.
2. Deralia is prohibited from purchasing or building any type of warships without complete approval from the Defense Committee.
3. Deralia is to (within 48 hours of the passage of this Act) pay Dantooine 1,300,000 credits (From the pocket of King Deralius) plus one DP20 gunship and two squadrons of fighters from the complement of it's Venator-class.
4. Deralia is prohibited from taking part in unilateral military aggression for three years.
5. Tammuz Sector Rangers, coordinating with the Imperial Security Bureau, are urged to investigate the rumors of Deralians kidnapping Dantooinian citizens.

I think this is a good proposal. However, I would recommend some changes. Dantooine is a small world. Unlike Anaxes or Ralltiir, Dantooine cannot as easily replace their food supply as the larger worlds can. Thus, I propose a slightly harsher punishment.

My amendment are the following:
1. Deralia is to be inspected to assure its military complies with all current guidelines right away, and then every 6 months for three years.
2. Deralia is prohibited from purchasing or building any type of warships without complete approval from the Defense Committee.
3. Deralia is to pay Dantooine 1,300,000 credits plus one DP20 gunship and two squadrons of planetary fighters.
4. Deralia is prohibited from taking part in unilateral military aggression for three years.
5. Tammuz Sector Rangers, coordinating with the Imperial Security Bureau, are urged to investigate the rumors of Deralians kidnapping Dantooinian citizens.

Greeting, to the esteemed members of the Senate. I Lucia Poplicola, and I have been appointed to serve temporarily as Representive of Senator Veritas' vacated constituency until a permanent replacement for the remainder of his term is appointed, with Ambassador level authorization only. Meaning, I will only partake in matters concerning Deralia and the Outer Rim. I request permission from the Chair to assume the floor.

Lucia Poplicola
Temporary Representative of Deralia
Former Deralian Ambassador to Volus

Empress Teta would like to bring to the Senate's attention that the financial effects of this proposal will be more readily felt by the average Deralian - people far removed from the decision making process of their government and military, than by the ruling class and military leaders who actually made the decision to attack Dantooine.

Perhaps the proposal could be re-framed to more precisely impose sanctions on the people actually responsible?

And perhaps some of this could be mitigated if Deralian officials came forth with some kind of evidence, however scant it may be - that there are indeed terrorists operating from Dantooine? If any of those allegations are true, it would be remiss of the Senate to not push for that to be addressed as well.

These sanctions will not be felt in the slightest by the average Deralian, the fine is under one and a half million credits. But I will change this so it is targeted directly at the king if you would prefer.

I understand the fine is moderate, but isn't the loss of a whole ship and two squadrons of planetary fighters not an entire ship's crew and maintenance workers out of a job, along with that of the pilots and their support staff?

I support what is intended with this proposal, I'm just unsure of the notion of punishing Deralia as opposed to punishing the decision makers.

And again, I think it would be expedient on Deralia's part to present the evidence they have that led them to claim there are terrorists operating from Dantooine. It just seems folly to cause so much havoc when they would have had to have known an attempted takeover of an Imperial world would have never gone quietly, quickly or easily and at low cost.

I genuinely doubt it, look at the size of the Deralian military-industrial complex and you will see that in fact there is little or no chance of there being any redundancies (unless the Deralian government engineers it to attack these sanctions). There is nothing preventing them buying new fighters and giving these other men jobs on shuttles etc.

This is an act targeted at the Deralian Government and its actions. The act clearly punishes Deralia the polity, not Deralia the people.

Folly on their part? I think not, Imperialism, I think.. Yes. Deralia used to call itself "the Deralian Empire", it has pretentions far above its station and has sought to attack another world, essentially because it could do so and because it believed there was no chance that Dantooine could stop it.

On the matter of these sanctions, Empress Teta's concerns are alleviated with your explanation and we vote in favor of the proposition as put forth by Senator Oriel.

However, we still believe it would be prudent for the ISB and Tammuz Sector Rangers to be encouraged to investigate whether there is indeed any terrorist activity emanating from Dantooine, as was alleged by Deralia.

Does the Senate really think that Deralia would act so aggressively on the pretense of combating terrorism, without some kind of evidence?

Perhaps the Deralian representative can shed some light on this for us. She is recognized for the time being but may not vote on this measure until the oath of office has been administered.

As there appears to be no further comment on this measure, it passes unanimously.
