Revaluation of Senate Salaries

I hope we can agree that salary should be based on job performance. This is especially true of Senators, many of whom take advantage of the benefits of the position—free travel, security, paid "leaves of absence," etc.—without proposing a thing to repay the people who elected them Senator.

Right now, Senate salary is determined by the Senate itself, voting arbitrarily for pay increases every so often. In one case, the Senator of Eriadu proposed a pay increase for himself, and himself only. This abuse of the system must end, and so I propose the following and vote in favor.

I. Senate salary shall be based on job performance, to be re-assessed every 6 months beginning from each Senator's swearing-in, or the beginning of a Senate term, whichever is more recent. Senators who propose fewer than 3 measures in each 6-month period shall have their pay grade reduced from "A" to "A-".

II. Senators who propose 6 or more measures over each 6-month period shall have their pay grade increased from "A" to "A+". However, Senators may decline a pay increase if they choose.

III. The Senate may still vote to increase or reduce salary, but these changes shall only apply to the "A+" pay grade. The other pay grades shall be set as follows:

    "A-" 75,000 credits
    0-2 proposals in 6-month period

"A" 150,000 credits (default starting pay)
    3-5 proposals in 6-month period

"A+" 200,000+ credits (may be increased by Senate vote)
6 or more proposals in 6-month period

IV. Paid vacation and leaves of absence shall be eliminated for the "A-" pay grade.

V. All Senators, regardless of pay grade, are entitled to compensation for staff, security, and work-related travel expenses. Diplomatic vessels and Senate-employed staff shall not accompany a Senator on non-work-related travel.

VI. Senators are required to make a detailed accounting of all work-related expenses to be reimbursed. No compensation shall be paid in advance.

This is a very well-planned system, Senator Fitzgerald. Perhaps a balance of pay is exactly what we need here. After all, the Senators who put in more work should only naturally be paid more than the Senators who are somewhat lacking in their aid to better the Empire. Lorrd is in favor.

I see no reason to oppose this. Senate salary isn't of much interest to me. Few among us become Senators for the money, though I don't deny that some do.

I vote in favor of this. Such a measure might actually motivate several Senators, me included, to actually look deeper into matters.

So if you just churn out a load of bollocks you deserve to be paid more?

We don't all slap our names onto charities and call it a day, Senator Ordan. Some Senators try their best, others don't. I'd rather reward the ones who try.

That pay increase wasn't "For Senator Oswaldt, XOXO." It was for Senators representing Outer Rim sector capital worlds with populations of 22 billion or higher. Does that include me? Yes. Does this new bill of yours include a nice pay raise for yourself, too? Why, yes. But it also includes a pay raise for me, so it's a win-win. In favor

Johannes Oswaldt
Senator and Governor of Eriadu

From Section II: "However, Senators may decline a pay increase if they choose." I have no intention of accepting a pay increase even if I do qualify. I live modestly and don't need the money. Some do, and some—not me, but some—are motivated by money, and if this bill motivates them into doing the work the people sent us here to do, then I'll consider it a success. Not for me personally, but for this institution. Apparently, the Senator from Eriadu doesn't understand why someone would propose something that's not for personal gain.

As there are no votes against, the measure passes unanimously.
