It had been at least a couple of months since Ilanah Thanatos had last set foot on Imperial Center. First there had been the trip to Rothana, then to see Tremaine, and then Naboo and Chandrila. Working remotely had been fine for the most part, but her office was likely piled up. She did hope that Seraphine would accept her offer soon, as she needed the help since Adoven was gone.

The ship landed seamlessly and Lana looked up from the datapad she was reading when one of the crew members came back to speak with her. "Senator, your speeder isn't waiting in the hanger like we had arranged. Control said that it was canceled." She frowned and took a deep breath before she responded. There wasn't any anger, it was just a slight annoyance, but it was likely a miscommunication between her crew and the hanger crew.

"That's alright. I will have Kal get one....I am sure he won't mind." She murmured as she began packing her belongings back into her work satchel. "Right?" She said to Kal, who nodded his affirmation and then went off in search of a speeder to take them home. Ilanah watched him go and smiled slightly before she finished putting her things away and left the ship herself.

She didn't go far from the ship, just outside of the hanger bay, to wait for the speeder so that she could head home.

The unmistakable scream of a TIE fighter's engines was constantly (and annoyingly) heard around the spaceport, louder even than the usual din of repulsorlifts. So obnoxious was the sound that some Moffs had begun using TIE's in psychological operations on some worlds, sending them on night and morning patrols above alien neighborhoods believed to be hiding criminals or dissidents. No TIE fighter was anywhere to be seen here, however. A reminder that the starfighter that was coming to epitomize the Imperial armed forces could keep a low profile when it didn't want to be seen. So could Rainier Brandt, but easily seen in this instance was his limousine, parked where Ilanah would have expected her speeder to be. The rearmost window was rolled down, and Brandt's familiar face was there, smiling that chesire grin of his at Ilanah as the Senator noticed him. "Hello!" he called to her, cordially (but not as cordially as usual. Something about his typical, friendly façade seemed off today). "I called off your speeder," he explained, "I heard you were coming back to my fair city and thought I would greet you."

Riley, even though he was not at his best, postured the second he heard the voice of the Moff boom across the causeway. Ilanah had her back to the limousine at first as she spoke quietly with Riley, but as soon as the man shifted, she heard Brand't voice and she paused. After a moment, the Senator turned and glanced over her shoulder and gave the Moff a sweet and honestly sincere smile.

"How kind of you, Moff Brandt." She said as she moved over, despite the obvious look of panic on the face of her body guard. "But I will still need to get home. I've sent my other guard to fetch a speeder." Ilanah said as she let Riley take her small travel case and he stepped back and placed it with her luggage.

"So is there another reason for your warm welcome, or did you just miss me?" She teased as she rested one of her hands on the window sill of the speeder. Her gaze went off in the distance to look for any sign of Kal, but he was not to be seen as of yet. It would probably take him some time to find a suitable mode of transportation in the large spaceport.

"Don't be silly," Brandt said, dismissively. He could be seen gesturing to the driver of the speeder, and the trunk opened dutifully. "It would be my pleasure to give you a ride," he explained, "And since you mention it, there is something I'd like to discuss with you. It shouldn't take long, though, and won't detain you longer than the flight." Something confidential, no doubt. Brandt's eyes settled unfavorably on Riley—whether he disapproved of the man for not being there for Ilanah during her home intrusion on Chandrila, or whether he simply didn't care for him personally, who knew? He was welcome to come too though, if necessary, and if Ilanah didn't mind discussing a confidential matter in his presence. Either way, Brandt seemed determined to speak with her in the relative privacy of his speeder.

Poor Riley was nearly purple from holding his breath as Brandt spoke and offered her a ride home. When the trunk opened, she waved her hand a little and motioned for him to go ahead and put her suitcase in the trunk. She turned to him as he did that and spoke quietly. "Just let Kal know that I am fine, and I will see you two at the condo, alright?" She murmured before she squeezed Riley's arm and then turned and climbed into the vehicle.

Ilanah settled herself across from Brandt and set her work satchel on the seat next to her before she smoothed the plum hued silk of her gowns skirtings. "This is very kind of you, Your Excellency. I am sure you do not greet all Senators in such a manner." She said as she finally turned her full attention to him. The Senator folded her hands in her lap neatly and cleared her throat. "I hope that everything is alright. Was I too harsh in my words to Senator Oswaldt last week? If so, my apologies. He just....I do not like the way he looks at me sometimes and I think that discomfort channels over...and that is not like me at all." She rambled for a minute, unsure if that was even the reason he wanted to speak with her.

It could have been something so much more simple than that, like a request or something. Or it could have been much more complicated and not end well. She wasn't sure, so instead of saying anything else, she just flashed the man across from her a dazzling smile. "So what is it that you wanted to talk about?"

He seemed tempted to return her smile, but didn't. Something had him perturbed, and quite unlike Brandt with his fondness for pleasantries, he got right to it once the speeder was underway and Ilanah was, in a sense, his captive. The hitherto unseen duo of TIE fighters appeared seemingly from nowhere to drop in on either side of Brandt's speeder, in escort formation. "No," the Moff said, a bit absently, "Senator Oswaldt is a good man. An obstinate man, though. I'm not surprised he riled you, though I'm afraid I don't recall you having any harsh words for him. No," he went on, "this is about another Senator—Tremaine Fowlkes, of Telos IV. You'll recall him from the party, if nothing else," he said, a bit wishfully.

"I trust you'll treat this matter with discretion," he said, "An audit of the Senator's company has revealed hundreds of thousands of missing credits. Naturally, I confronted him with this in private, so that he could look into it free of public scrutiny. I regret to say Senator Fowlkes became uncharacteristically belligerent and made a frenzied denial of any wrongdoing without even looking into the matter. In the course of this, he told me to 'ask Senator Thanatos' about the missing money." His eyes came to rest on Ilanah, his expression not devoid of all sympathy, but still undeniably cold and calculating—the usual demeanor he assumed when dealing with an unruly subordinate or, worse, a suspected rebel. "He seems to think you know something about this?"

A moment of gut seizing panic shot through the Senator when Brandt explained the situation about Tremaine. He could have at least warned her that Brandt would be asking her about this, and since he did not, she was certainly going to give him an earful about it over the holo later. If there was a later for her, that was.

"Senator Fowlkes treated you like that? I am honestly surprised, Your Excellency. He and I dined together on a few occasions and he was a gentleman through and through." She said back with a sigh, and gave the Moff a sympathetic look. "I cannot for the life of me think why he would tell you to ask me about his missing money...." Ilanah trailed off for a moment as she gazed thoughtfully at him.

"...Unless...." She paused again and then dug through her satchel and pulled out a thin datapad. "We received a huge donation...of the hundreds and thousands of credits variety....anonymously. He did promise me a donation....oh that man!" She exclaimed as she turned the datapad on and scrolled through the spreadsheets to find it. "Is this the amount, Your Excellency?" Ilanah shifted and slid across the back of the speeder gracefully so that she was seated next to him. On the spreadsheet, there was, in fact, a huge donation of credits listed from an anonymous source. If Brandt didn't believe it, this would at least hopefully give Tremaine a few more days to come up with something.

She would let him take the datapad if he wanted it, the device dedicated solely to her work with the medical centers: spreadsheets, plans, schematics, lists, etc. Idly, she would brush her hand lightly across his arm as she handed it over. "Perhaps he got so defensive because he did not want to appear soft in front of you, Rainier. Now that I think about it, I can see how one would want to not show such a strong and independent man a weakness such as a caring for sick children." Lana smiled a little. "Could that be it? Otherwise I have no clue...."

Brandt slid closer to her, ostensibly to see the figures on the datapad. He let his eyes wander surreptitiously, however, to an entirely different figure. He was near enough to smell her, and made a point of doing so. But he forced his attention back to the datapad, and wasn't at all convinced by what he saw. The anonymous donation was unusual, but appeared legitimate. As he had pointed out to Tremaine, however, charitable donations would appear on his company's books (there were none). If somehow this donation was from his company, it raised even more questions; namely, why was no one informed, not even the board of directors who, presumably, needed to approve charitable donations? What about the accountants, too? Whether he was making money "disappear" to charities or to drugs or prostitutes, Tremaine was still mishandling his company's money. (Brandt still suspected it was drugs or prostitutes, though. Not that he cared—either way, he had enough to blackmail Tremaine). He noticed something else, too—"No," he told Ilanah, "See, the amounts aren't the same. Not even close."

So the donation to Ilanah's charity was legitimate, but had nothing to do with Tremaine. Why, then, had Tremaine mentioned Ilanah? It offended Brandt's sense of chivalry that the Senator would implicate Ilanah, seemingly innocent, in his financial misdeeds. Or did Brandt simply want to believe she was innocent? He found his gaze wandering to her again, wondering if she could, in fact, be involved in this. It seemed there were more questions to be asked, but Brandt had no intention of asking them—as long as Tremaine paid the modest amount that Brandt demanded of him.

"I'm afraid it's worse than that, my dear," he explained, sliding back to where he was before. "Senator Fowlkes was frenzied. He sounded downright seditious. I'm of the opinion that a man tends to reveal what he really thinks in the heat of the moment, and in the heat of the moment he revealed some troubling thoughts indeed. His censure comes as no surprise to me, I'm sorry to say. I simply hope he sees reason."

She tossed the datapad back onto the top of her satchel gently, but made no move to slide back to the seat across from Brandt. Instead, she made herself comfortable where she was and glanced to the man next to her. Slowly, she started to understand Tremaine's reasoning for throwing her under the proverbial speeder bus, though at that point, her understanding was still mostly assumption. Still, he could have given her some sort of warning. And the Senator would be hearing from her later.

"Rainier, it is alright that I call you that, isn't it?" She asked, having already called him by his given name on more than one occasion. It added an intimate touch, she felt, calling the man by his name instead of his title. "Rainier, would you like me to speak with him? I am sure that the Senator was nervous in front of you. You are, after all, a very powerful and intimidating man. Your questioning might have dredged up some old memories and maybe a touch of post traumatic stress....he did fight in the war, after all. I could see that happening to him." Ilanah paused for a moment. "Perhaps he would listen to me a little easier." She offered a soft, warm smile.

"I would be more than happy to help you, discreetly of course. You did help me with that situation on Chandrila, so I do owe you a favor."

"You're quite welcome," Brandt said, waving his hand dismissively, "I couldn't stand the idea of something bad happening to you. It wouldn't be helping me though, to talk to Tremaine. I was only trying to help him, after all." Brandt, notably, did not deny being either powerful or intimidating. "By all means," he went on, "do try. But to be honest I tire of so much hostility from a man who has been the object of my charity and concern. I did suggest a way I could help him with his seeming impropriety," he said, without going into detail about the bribe he'd solicited from Tremaine, "And I'll speak to him about it again when he returns to Imperial Center. I do hope you can talk some sense into him before then." The speeder banked gently to one side, beginning to descend toward Ilanah's suite. The TIE fighters kept pace, making a spectacle of themselves.

She would lean back against the seat in the speeder, relaxing only slightly next to the Moff. "Well I will do the best I can, your Excellency. Hopefully it will be enough." Ilanah murmured before she glanced down and examined her nails for a moment before she snapped her attention back to Brandt. "I can only hope that he will not be as hostile with me as he seemed to be with you."

It was a moment later that she felt the speeder dip slightly and her gaze flitted to the window and she saw her apartments, her senatorial ones and not her private condo, come into view. "I will call him straight away, certainly." She assured Brandt before she rested her hand on his forearm and squeezed gently with her fingertips. Ilanah let her gaze meet his for only a moment before a small smile tugged at her lips. It was all a game really, right now, but if she had bought Tremaine some more time it would have been worth it.

"It seems we're almost there." She said, withdrawing her hand slowly. "I appreciate the escort home. It is always nice to see you....and thankfully this time it was without my need for help."

Brandt returned her smile, and laughed softly. "I assure you, Ilanah, you're quite safe here. Nothing happens in this city I don't know about." As usual, chivalry with a touch of menace. Brandt couldn't seem to help himself, and clearly thought himself to be nothing but dashing. He still wasn't entirely in the moment, though. There was too much to consider in this case—too much awry. It distracted him from even from the Senator, who usually enchanted him so. He had a tendency to over-think things that he usually remedied with a glass of brandy, but his the day's travels (meeting with Tremaine earlier, and Ilanah now) had kept him from his amber restorative. "Hm," he said belatedly, seeming to return to the moment, "Yes, so, do what you can, of course. And welcome home, if I may be so immodest as to hope you will consider Imperial Center a second 'home.'" The speeder came to a stop, and Brandt nodded cordially to her.

The Senator stayed seated for a moment when the speeder stopped. She was positive that neither Kal nor Riley would be there, since they would be at the condo, and both were likely in a state of heart-seizing panic over her absence. Especially Kal. Her worry right now was for Tremaine. Tremaine and the rebellion.

"I couldn't persuade you to come in for a brandy or something, could I, Rainier? Silly Senator Fowlkes seems to have you beside yourself. Your normal charm is somewhat....off." She murmured as she leaned forward to reach for her satchel. Idly, she tucked the datapad that she had been showing to him into it and zipped the case closed. "I hardly think he is worth worrying about. A man such as yourself certainly has more important things to concern himself with, hmmm?" She smiled sweetly and reached for the door handle and removed herself from the speeder in one graceful movement. He would either follow, or give his refusal and they would say goodbye, either way it didn't matter much to her.

A small speeder pulled up to the platform, Kal behind the controls. His head turned from side to side, looking for Lana. Finally, he stopped on Riley. His eyes closed a little as he looked at him. His right hand came up, pointing at Lana's guard, "Where is she!?"

Riley wasn't sure exactly how to respond, knowing the temper that Kal had. He shook his head, "She was picked up by the Moff, and I believe that she was being taken to the apartment in the Senate District..."

A small growl came from his mouth before ordering Riley, "GET IN, NOW!!!" Without hesitation, Riley jumped into the open top speeder. Before he could strap himself in, Kal sped off. He couldn't believe that she would just leave them both there.

It was nearly ten minutes before the small speeder arrived at the apartments. There was no sign of Lana having arrived yet. For now, the two of them would wait inside. Kal was trying as hard as he could to hold his temper. A Moff's power was great. At this point, he was willing to test just how powerful this Moff was.
