| CHAPTER INDEX Till the Next Day Comes
"Trust not much to appearances." ~Virgil
.....
Bellassa, 27 BBY The Slums of Ussa
Something stunk, and it wasn't just the faint smell of sewage wafting from the gutters that lined the cobblestone roads. For the first time in his short life, Karth found himself yearning for his Master at his side; this assassin was dangerous, and for all his bravado, De'Qora found himself hesitant to walk amongst the seedier parts of the resplendent capital without some sort of reassurance that his blind side was protected. Nevertheless, Silas had to stay behind, were the would-be assassin to return and try and finish the job, Gratus would need a Jedi there to protect him yet again. The speed and skill with which the attacker had eluded him thus far was most certainly unnerving, clearly the secessionists were past the point of negotiation, this was an act of outright war. Still, something felt... off - things weren't ever what they seemed to be, he'd learned that much, and Karth was determined to get to the bottom of things. His hand never left the hilt of his saber, the long cloak thankfully concealing such and allowing him to weave his way through the crowd with ease. The sun had just begun to set over the mountains, the bright lights of the Bellassan nightlife etching a colorful filigree into the night sky.
His destination was uncertain, even to him, all the Jedi could do at this point was concentrate. The Force coursed through his veins, reassuring him, it's familiarity almost like that of an unseen guardian. He felt the gentle tide of life that stemmed from his surroundings, and in that moment everything was clearer than it had been before. Every footstep, every hastened breath of a passerby pushing their way through the growing masses, Karth's eyes darted about as he sought some sort of anomaly; any adverse feeling, no matter how insignificant, could be the person he was chasing, and yet he found nothing. To conceal oneself from detection through the Force was a skill that was not uncommon, especially to trained assassins, but the fact that this infiltrator possessed some level of Force affinity served to increase the sickening feeling in his gut - something was definitely wrong.
The long trek through the streets of Ussa would eventually end at the Sunrise Cantina; a decrepit little hole-in-the-wall that seemed packed to the brim, the perfect place for a fugitive to slip into and evade capture. His mind cautioned against the idea, any one of the people in that bar could be his man, and yet the Force seemed to push him towards the door. Answers, and hopefully not an assassin's blade, awaited him inside. So, against his better judgement, Karth pushed his way through the door to the bar and rested his back against the wall, his eyes scanning the room intently, and the nervousness in his gut growing with each passing moment. Whatever was about to happen, things were coming to a head, if only he knew just how right he truly was. So focused was he on scanning the bar's patrons that, as he slowly left the wall and began to shuffle through the drunkards, he failed to notice the dark figure slipping in the door behind him.

| The Padawan had been cautious, as she had always known him to be. So cautious in fact, that Daneira had to fight the urge constantly to slip from beneath her cloak of the Force and strike him down where he stood in that filth riddled street. The worst part was who the man was that had stopped her. Had he known, his dissapointment likely would have shown, but she had to reason that he would have done the same thing had his own master been kidnapped.
Certainly Karth would have done that had Silas gone missing, Daneira reassured herself in her head. Certainly he would have understood exactly what she was going through and exactly why she had to do what she had attempted, and failed, to do. She paused in her step, slinking for a moment behind two drunk patrons that were ambling from bar to bar, as Karth entered the Sunrise Cantina. Her grey-blue eyes narrowed for a moment as she watched him dissapear into the crowd, though he was never truly gone, as she could still sense him.
She had been hiding for two weeks, and that time in exile had been long enough. There hadn't been enough time to get over how angry she was at her Padawan friend, however. As she slipped into the cantina herself, Daneira slipped around the room the opposite way, making sure to keep as hidden as possible in the throng of drunken miscreants. Finally, she found herself mere feet from the turned back of the young man, someone she had adored and respected before. Gut instinct told her that starting a fight there was a bad idea, and despite how angry she was, she would not let innocent people get injured because of her unbridled rage.
Instead, she simple let the Force go, and within fractions of a second, Karth would know exactly who was behind him, and how furious she was. Not only was it tearing her emotions apart, but he would be able to see it in her eyes.

| A sudden surge of emotion registered then, and were they not in a crowded cantina full of innocent bystanders Karth wouldn't have hesitated to wheel around and cut down the assassin where they stood. The presence was familiar, yet at the same time it felt distant, it was one he hadn't felt in years. The fact that he'd encountered this person before only served to heighten his survival instincts; if he knew this person, then they knew him in turn. A warrior such as himself could only assume that they would then know the intricacies of his swordsmanship; if he was to stand any chance against them he would need to take the advantage early and not relent. Perhaps it was simply his imagination playing tricks on him; perhaps not, but he could have sworn he felt the icy muzzle of a blaster pressing ever-so-lightly into the small of his back.
Determined not to tip his hand, Karth kept his composure and continued to move through the crowd, his attention never truly leaving the whirlwind of emotions at his back. His eyes darted about for any means of escape, and when he spied the back exit of the cantina, De'Qora saw his chance to gain the upper hand. The assassin seemed to relent, if only for a moment, granting him a bit of space with which he could maneuver through the congregation of drunkards and perhaps spring his trap. Still, try as he might, he couldn't lose them, and so Karth had no choice but to step out into the dark alleyway behind the cantina and pause, waiting for the assassin to catch up. Another surge from the Force; the moment to strike had come, he had an opening. He caught the damp ground with the ball of his right foot and spun around, the azure blade of his saber springing to life in one fluid motion as he aimed to bring the blade within inches of the woman's neck.
The sight that awaited him, however, blindsided him in ways he never thought were possible. Catching himself just in time, De'Qora's blade hovered perilously close to Dani's exposed chest, but the shock in his eyes made it easily apparent that he was no longer interested in causing her harm.
"D- Dani!? You're alive - but how!?"

| The young woman didn't flinch when he activated his lightsaber, nor did she make a move for hers. "Go ahead. Kill me. It would hardly be worse than what you've already done." She hissed. The azure blade hummed close to her skin and she could feel the heat radiating off of it. Dani watched him, her grey/blue eyes nearly swirling with anger. He would be able to see it, as well as sense it.
"How......could....you?" Dani said as she finally stepped from the path of the glowing blade and pushed the dark hood of her cloak back from her face. Her silken, raven locks fell loose around her porcelain pale face in soft waves, natural and untouched. She ran her fingers through the curls, tousling the strands and keeping them back from her eyes. "How could you do that to me!?!" Her emotions raged, and she made no attempts at quelling her upset towards the Padawan. She had seen him block her shot when she attempted to kill the corrupt senator. She had seen his face and watched him protect the man from her revenge.
It was a slippery slope that Daneira was now on, one that she wasn't sure she cared to try and stop sliding down. With her master gone, Dani assumed she was dead, she couldn't tell, there was nothing stopping her from getting that revenge. Now instead of the Senator, Karth was in her way and had to be dealt with before he could try and stop her again. "I thought we were friends, Karth. I did. But now I know....you're just....you're one of them." She said, though her voice softened at her last few words. "I trusted you with my life once."

| He'd never seen her so enraged before; then again, Karth hadn't seen her at all in the last five years. Dani had always been so calm as a child, her emotions always carefully in check and her cheerful disposition always served to lighten his mood. Growing up for both of them had been hard, especially for Karth; for the longest time he'd been an outcast, even among those he called 'friends' - but with Dani, he'd always felt a sense of belonging. To see her react so harshly made it clear that she'd changed since then; she'd matured, become more confident, while he still felt uncomfortable in his own skin at times. The shock of seeing her still overrode all other thought, the way she hissed each word eventually snapping him out of his reverie and back into the present. Tentatively, he moved the crackling blade away from her chest and deactivated the weapon, returning it to his belt in deliberately slow fashion - best not to aggravate Dani any further.
He struggled to find the words that could best describe his bewilderment, eventually managing to quiet the cyclone of thoughts within his mind and find his center. She continued her tirade, and while his first instinct would have been to interrupt her and ask one of the ten-billion questions he had, he chose instead to patiently wait until she calmed down, though her final words stung more than he thought possible. So they stood in silence for a moment, until the color had run from her ivory cheeks and he'd worked out some of the adrenaline in his system; he'd almost killed her just now, and the thought of that was enough to knock the normally-overconfident Padawan back down to reality.
"I'm... one of them?"
That was all he could muster, his obsidian eyes studying her every moment with the sharpest of concentration. So many other things needed answering; but barraging her with so many questions wouldn't help at all. She felt betrayed, as if he'd known she was the one perched on that balcony with the blaster; how was he supposed to know that his oldest friend, the very woman he'd come to Bellassa to find, was also the one he was supposed to hunt down and detain? Sure, had he known, he probably still would have stopped her; assassination wasn't the Jedi way, and it certainly was atypical of the lighthearted young woman he'd spent twelve years of his life sharing everything with. He deserved an explanation, and she deserved his full attention, so it was given.

| The few moments of silence was hardly enough to calm Daneira fully. Yes, the flush had left her cheeks, but the anger hadn't faded. The young woman paced for a moment, forcing herself not to draw her lightsaber and cut him down right there. Something in her wouldn't have been able to do it anyway. The nostalgia of Karth was starting to drain the fury from her, though not much. Instead, she stopped right in front of the Padawan, stared at him for a minute, and then she shoved him. Dani planted both of her palms hard against Karth's chest, and just pushed him, like an angry teenager starting a fight in the cafeteria.
"You stopped me! You stopped me from killing that politician. He deserved to die, don't you understand?!" She snapped, before she pushed him again, though it wasn't as hard the second time since she was running out of steam. Of course she didn't know that Karth had no idea what was going on. "And now you.....you are just like them...corrupt....liars....killers."
Daneira finally softened on the last few words, her anger faded for the moment and how truly upset she was showed through. "My oldest friend." She whispered, her voice slightly hoarse from yelling at him. For a moment, when she looked at Karth, she remembered how good of friends they had once been before they had to go their separate ways; him with his master, and her with hers. That thought spiraled. Her master was gone, and the anger started to grow once again, but she kept it locked deep inside. For now.

| Violence was never something he responded to; or rather, it was never something he responded to without future dismemberment of said offender being involved. His back hit the wall of the adjacent building - hard - and the increasingly-perplexed Jedi felt a gloved hand clench the hilt of his saber until his knuckles were devoid of all color. Maintaining his calm soon proved a chore, but for Dani's sake, he fought the urge to shove back. The attempt on Gratus' life played over and over again in his mind's eye, much like hastily-thrown together images projected on a viewscreen. A muzzle flash, the beryl blade of his weapon catching the shot just barely, and then a - rather exhausting - pursuit that ultimately led them to this... touching reunion.
Another shove, far less forceful and lacking the righteous fire of the first; but it still managed to fan the flames that had been smoldering inside him. Much like a child responds to such stimuli, the two of them seemed to have reverted back to their old ways as Karth returned the gesture; albeit with far less strength than he normally used, just enough to create some distance between them. Eyes staring daggers, De'Qora found his patience slipping and decided it was his turn to be angry.
"What the hell are you talking about!? I was doing my job, you know, that thing we've been training to do our entire lives!? Would you care to explain why you just tried to assassinate an innocent man, a Chancellor no less!?"
Rage, an emotion he had thought he left in the past, the passionate fire in his gut embraced him like an old friend just returned from a long journey. It comforted him, brought him back to a time when things, while not simple at all, seemed so full of promise. Then, his center returned, and he remembered whom it was that had assuaged his fury all those times in the past: the woman he'd just accosted. Steadying himself, Karth's hand finally left the hilt of his weapon, running through his frayed ebon locks and pushing back the skin on his temples. He spoke one final time, his tone far more reserved. "I need to know everything, Dani, help me out here."

| Just as she had shoved him, Karth returned the gesture with much less force that Dani had initially. Despite that, the Padawan was still caught off guard and actually stumbled and managed to catch herself before she fell. For an instant, she wished her balance hadn't been so good, as to play on the guilt of Karth. The thought of him being upset that he had hurt her would have been a welcome change from the anger she had been feeling.
"Your job, as you call it, is to protect the innocent, isn't it?" Dani paused her speech before she paced in front of Karth for only a few moments. "So why the hell are you helping him?! Chancellor or not!" She yelled, once again her anger building up again. She clenched her fists as she paced back and forth in front of her friend, the man she thought was her friend.
Daneira met Karth's gaze finally and she started to soften, her resolve melting finally. "I have a hard time believing that you never saw it....that none of the Order ever saw it. And now it's too late." She started before she finally dropped down and sat on a discarded plastic liquor crate that was in the alley. "He took her, Karth. He took Atrya." Dani shook her head and dropped it into her hands before she pushed her fingers through her raven locks. "She's probably dead by now. I was just trying...." She paused to suck in a deep breath. "To get to her.....when you stopped me."
She truly believed that she had been doing the right thing. It only made sense to her to kill the man who was trying to form an uprising. That same man kidnapped her master. And that same man tried to do the same to her, though she managed to get away. Dani covered her face with both hands and rubbed her eyes lightly with her fingertips. The orbs burned from lack of sleep and there were tears stinging them and threatening to escape.

| He... took her? That sentence hit him like a boot to the face; and as her eyes moistened and she collapsed onto the crate, the past, something he'd thought he'd never relive, seemed as though it were only a day ago. They'd always been there for each other; whether she'd been teased again for her large shoulders (something she'd grown in to, quite well, in fact) or Karth had once again failed to please whatever Jedi Master had observed him, the inseparable duo always found ways to brighten their spirits. His shock and his rage subsided, replaced with an alien sympathy, something he'd not felt in years; and as he knelt down in front of her, a gloved hand nudged her chin upwards, meeting her steel-blue gaze with a newfound understanding. More questions awaited her, but for now, he thought it best just to calm her down.
Black cloak fluttering in a sudden, chilling breeze, De'Qora's hand slid gently from her chin to her shoulder, squeezing gently and hoping it'd be enough to calm her down. Seeing her again in such a state reignited something within him; friends had dropped to the bottom of his priority list since becoming Silas' student (the Jedi Master pushed him so hard that Karth never had time for anything else), yet here he was, comforting her, though his remaining questions desperately needed answering. A resigned sigh, a slight chuckle (though at what, he wasn't sure), and he spoke again, his tone returning to its calm, unwavering nature this time around.
"Why would he take her, Dani?"
A simple question, though something told him that asking it would tear down a floodgate and he'd soon find himself overwhelmed once again. Still, better that he learn the whole truth now; he'd been piecing it all together thus far, but she'd have to enlighten him entirely before he could act on it.

| Daneira always tried not to show her emotions. She tried, and usually succeeded, to keep them in check. Karth had been the only person to see her cry, to see her melt down, and to be there for her when she needed it. No matter what the situation. First it was the teasing (one would have thought that a training Padawan could have handled teasing....but kids were cruel, despite where they were), then the criticism, and now this. She sighed and looked up at Karth as he lifted her chin with his fingertips.
Tears welled, but didn't spill and Dani pulled her gaze away from his before they could. Things were different now, despite the feelings that were coming back to her, and she did not want Karth to see her cry. Not now. It was a struggle, and there was nothing more she wanted to do than to let loose and get it all out.
"I really do not know why. I just know that there is something happening, and they want the Jedi out of the way." She said softly before she straightened up and wiped the tears off of the rims of her bloodshot eyes. "And they started with us. I....I wish I knew more. If I could have gotten to Atrya, we might have known more." Dani lifted her hand and rested it on Karth's that Was still resting on her shoulder.
Tenderly, she wrapped her fingers around his and squeezed his gloved digits lightly before a chill ran through her form. Her next words were difficult. "I was not sure that anyone would believe me. That's why I went alone. But I need help. If she's alive....we need to find her." Dani locked her gaze with Karth's again. "Please....will you help me?"

| Pleading was atypical of her, it was a sight that chilled him more than he thought anything could. Dani was a collected and level-headed warrior, much like Karth himself; and that something could bring her to the verge of tears like this served to wrench the knot in his gut even tighter. Even now, as she gave his hand that gentle squeeze he hadn't felt in so long, the anger and confusion dissipated into quiet determination. I didn't matter anymore what had happened, what mattered now was making sure it never happened again. If Gratus had indeed taken Master Kyza'an, then he'd pay; it didn't help matters that Karth couldn't feel his Master through the Force, he hadn't been able to since entering the cantina. A veritable cyclone of thoughts raced through his head, though his taciturn expression belied little.
"Whatever's going on, Dani, we'll get her back-" his hand still entwined with hers, Karth rose to his feet and offered to help her to her own. "-and we'll get to the bottom of this. I promise." Those last words he wasn't even sure about. So many things had happened in such quick fashion that he was still playing catch up within his mind, though the picture slowly began to unfurl before him. He placed his free hand on the bend of her shoulder, right where the clavicle met the neck, and offered the most reassuringly confident smile he could muster; though the doubt shone through in his cognac eyes.

| The feelings that she had held at one time for her Padawan friend were slowly knitting back together. It felt odd, since she had pushed all those thoughts and feelings of friendship aside for her training when they parted ways and followed their individual masters. That did not stop her from, for at least a moment each day, thinking about Karth. There were things that reminded her of him from time to time, though her training always came first.
Daneira allowed him to help her up and when he rested his hand at the crook of her neck, she let her gaze slide to it before she tilted her head and touched her cheek to the back of his hand tenderly, and briefly. Slowly, she looked back up and met his gaze. One tear, one crystalline tear had fallen from her red-tinged eyelid and left a salty trail down her cheek. The droplet had dissipated, but the glistening trail left in its wake had not.
"We should go then. Time is precious and so much has already been wasted." She murmured before she put her hand on his at her neck and pulled away from him slowly. Dani turned and walked away, slipping back into the din of the cantina that she had followed him through, pushing through the swarm of sweaty, alcohol saturated sentients unnoticed before she made it out front and in the direction of his speeder. She assumed he would have followed her, and when she finally glanced over his shoulder, she caught just a glimpse before she climbed into the vehicle.

| (( For some odd reason I'm having trouble with a transition for this, so I'm just going to skip ahead a tad. ))
The glimmer of the Ussan nightlife illuminated the night sky in an inviting orange glow. What would have normally been a peaceful, almost romantic ride through the night sky was instead a panicked frenzy of near-accidents and spoiled appetites. Karth's driving wasn't normally this frenetic, but Dani's constant side-seat driving and the sickening worry in his gut dispelled all thoughts of self-preservation. He was desperate to get back to Silas now, while the details themselves were still quite unclear to him, the back of his mind burned with innumerable questions. It was only a few hours ago that he'd pursued what he thought was a hired gun through the streets of Bellassa's capital, now he was racing against time to aid said assassin in her endeavor - some Jedi he was.
"Truck!"
"I know!"
"TRUCK!"
"I KNOW!"
A sharp tug on the yoke and the speeder just barely careened out of the way of a rather large trash hauler. Were he not so focused on not crashing, Karth would have permitted himself a quick glance at Dani; half-expecting her to flay him alive as soon as he did so. Still, the thrill of driving like this was a refreshing change from his normally stagnant, law-abiding ways; without even realizing it, a smile had crept across his haggard features.
"Hang on!"
Another close call, the driver of the cherry-red speeder they'd just barely missed was most certainly soiling himself. The sight of two frantic Jedi driving a jet-black speeder through the fiery night skies of a relatively-peaceful city whilst simultaneously shouting a number of curses at each other was most certainly a shock to the system.

| In the passenger seat, Daniera was slamming her booted foot onto the floorboard as if there was a brake pedal there. Not that it would help her stop Karth's rampage through the city. She cringed and gripped a little tighter on what she had deemed the "oh s#@t!" handle on the door. When he glanced over, she caught his gaze for only a moment. "Maybe I should drive. You're like a bantha in a china shop." She said before she looked forward again. The wind whipped her dark hair about her face as she waited for the moment that Karth would actually have the speeder leveled and there was not too much traffic.
Once that moment had been reached, she would grab onto his collar and haul herself into his lap between him and the steering wheel. Dani slid a little past though, and nudged him out of the seat with her hip. Unfortunately though, she was shorter, and her feet weren't able to reach the pedals as his were. A clever use of the force slid the seat up and into place and Dani applied the brakes gently to slow the speeder only slightly. "Ok....so.....where are we going?" She asked a likely stunned Karth as she looked to him for a moment.
In hindsight, it likely was not a good idea on her part to take the wheel, seeing as how she didn't have a license or a clue as to where they needed to be. Anything was better than the near flaming death at the hands of the Padawan. Dani actually let a small smile creep across her face as she cast him another glance.

| 'Stunned' would accurately describe his demeanor at the moment. From having a beautiful woman (whom he once thought of as a sister) climbing into and then over his lap to the fact that he'd somehow allowed himself to be forcibly edged out of the driver's seat. A cavalcade of civilian ships raced past them, many slowing down just a tad to offer a variety of insulting epithets involving their intelligence level. He couldn't blame them, of course, stopping dead in the middle of airway traffic was more often than not the cause of a major collision.
"I- uh... the Parliamentary building. Silas stayed behind with Gratus, if what you say is true, he's going to need me to bail him out. Again." The 'again' was a reference to their last assignment; Silas had a nasty habit of trusting people that he really shouldn't, and when some Bakuran terrorists had managed to corner him, the Padawan had swooped in and saved the older man's hide. "But are you sure you should drive? I mean do you even ha-"
The sharp retort of blaster fire in the streets below, coupled with the rocking of a large explosion, cut him off. Then the whine of sirens, more blaster fire, and the sudden screams of the populace echoing throughout the night sky. The Force called to him then; a sudden, sharp sense of dread suddenly took hold. They weren't safe, not up in the sky, exposed. "Dani, move! Go now!" But it was too late, a procession of blaster bolts rocketed towards their unarmed speeder and struck the engines dead on; they were now free-falling towards a crowded intersection - which also happened to be filled with the exchange of blasters and thermal detonators. A war had started in the streets of Ussa, and the two Jedi were caught smack-dab in the thick of it.
