At Parein II the Sarin Sector Fleet descended from hyperspace in full force. It was formed in two lines, the Gladiator-class vessels Invulnerable and Invincible, with the much smaller Imperial Customs Frigates Arbitrator, Antithesis and Antipode formed the rear of the two lines. The forward line was made up of a Nebulon-B Frigate (the Lacerator) and its four escorting corvettes, the CR-90s Dauntless and Danger as well as the Imperial Light Corvettes Taciturn and Vixen.

The longer line (made up of corvettes and the frigate) would move neatly around Parein II and intercept all inbound and outgoing vessels if they attempted to make for the hyperspace jump point. The heavier group (The Gladiator-class Star Destroyers and Customs Frigates would remain static at the jump point, intercepting any inbound vessels for Parein II.

The Moff was at the helm of the Invulnerable , he activated the communications array to the "Independent Hapan Nation" "In compliance with the unanimous vote of the Commerce Council, I Moff Lestrade of the Sarin Sector do officially close the trade lane to Parein II until further notice until the issue of the "Independent Hapan Nation's continued status is decided. In the mean time all cargo and military vessels will not move inbound or outbound from Parein II, any vessels which attempt to do so will be seized or destroyed without notice."

The INH's cargo fleet had returned some time prior, delivering materials and items for the shipyards and such before loading back up and heading out of the system. The Sarin Sector Fleet had missed them by a little under an hour. Within the shipyard, the Tears of Amber was still being repaired; its sublight engines were needing a major overhaul, and its hyperdrive was shot as well. The solitary Battle Dragon, the Song of Sorrow, was capable of sublight movement but also lacked a working hyperdrive. To the best of Imperial knowledge, these were the only two vessels possessed by the IHN; Da'shune had split his fleet and sent the other portion elsewhere. It was from the Song of Sorrow that the Moff would receive his reply.

"Moff Lestrade, this is Captain Mo'sha of the IHN Song of Sorrow. Your blockade is acknowledged." Other than that, no action was taken, for there was no need of such. A single hypercomm message, encrypted, originated from the planet not much later, sent off to elsewhere. The intent, though, was to alert the merchant fleet and thus give them orders to remain at their delivery port.

The Imperial fleet's lead vessel, the Gladiator-class Star Destroyer Invulnerable began to advance upon the Hapan vessels in orbit, it's guns were active and it's fighters ready to launch. The weapons terraces lit up and turbolasers began to pan towards the battle dragon. Once they were within weapons range, Lestrade opened up a communicator channel, thinking he would have their attention now.

"Hapan fleet, this is Moff Lestrade aboard the Invulnerable. I demand a status update on the Senatorial Delegation lead by Senator Oriel and his personage himself. I am willing to use any and all means to cause his return". He clicked of the channel, enjoying ramping up the pressure on the Hapans. He turned to Captain Remmington "Open the Hangar bay doors, calculate logical approach vectors to the nearest Hapan vessel"

"Moff Lestrade, this is Captain Mo'sha." The Captain's voice sounded harried and there were a number of shouts going on in the background. "Stand down your vessel, Moff. There's been an attempt on the Presidium's life. Evacuation of your Senator is a top priority at this time. If you wish to help, get a shuttle with a medical droid aboard it to the surface. There is word that the Senator was wounded. Until we can get further information, we will ask you to stand down."

The Song of Sorrow raised shields at that point, powering up its own weapons in preparation for defense, if necessary. There was always a chance it could be more than a solitary assassin. "Moff Lestrade, standby for a possible assault. This could be a Consortium reprisal raid and if so, we'll need you and your fleet. Without your aid, Parein II may suffer if we are caught with our pants down, so to speak."

The Moff smiled, hearing the harried tone in the Hapan Captain's voice, and quite frankly enjoying it immensely. He heard the news from the surface that Oriel had survived (but wounded) and that his scribe was dead. The Corellian star shuttle was watched and allowed to make the jump to Hyperspace as soon as was possible. Once the shuttle had left the Five Points would be transmitted to the Hapan Vessels.

Seeing their communication regarding the "Consortium Raid" he chuckled to himself. "I can assure you this is not the case, you think it likely that the Hapes Cluster would risk raiding an Imperial World? Surely you realize that the Imperial Navy would repay any such insult ten fold. "As a precaution though, and to oversee the emplacement of Imperial Proclamation CXII:23324, I will move my fleet in closer to your world to give you a feeling of security."

Hailing the fleet, Lestrade's fleet began to move closer to his flagship in its position with its bow facing the Hapan Song of Sorrow. The four corvettes moved towards the Tears of Amber in its position in dock where it was under refit. Targetting their weapons just in case it decided to move out of refit rapidly.

"You may surrender your vessels to us us at your convenience, within the next 24 hours" he then clicked the communications off once more and issued encrypted orders to the rest of the fleet to target the non-critical systems of the Battle Dragon so it could be disarmed peacefully if it attempted to attack.

It was easy enough to discern the intentions of the Moff. He intended to seize the pair of Hapan vessels. Mo'sha's soldiers on board, therefore, would plan otherwise. The supply of proton torpedoes carried by the Song of Sorrow was rather extensive; there were quite enough that no less than twenty torpedoes were wired up for command detonation in strategic places about the Battle Dragon, poised to destroy as much of the valuable technology the Imperials sought to steal from them. The shields on both the Battle Dragon and the Nova were both raised, while on-board the Tears of Amber, similar preparations were being made with the additional warheads that every Nova had been loaded with. Having foreseen no return to the Cluster, Da'shune had ordered his ship captains to obtain by any means as many warheads and necessary ammunition items as they could find. Needless to say, the Tears of Amber was able to rig up more warheads than her counterpart, seeing as a goodly number of warheads were prepared to run through the ten tubes that were, at present, pointed dead-on at the Imperial flagship; a Tatooine standoff, so to speak. Both ships began to warm their weapons as well, after the explosive preparations had been made, of course.

It was then that Mo'sha contacted the Moff. "Moff Lestrade, you appear to be moving your vessels in a threatening manner to ours. As you said, we have twenty-four hours to consider this decision and we will thank you to stand off until that time. Presidium Da'shune may yet depart Parein II for a better and more welcoming locale. To prevent any incidents, please move your vessels to six-one-five mark three."

The Tears of Amber began to move as well; slowly, as only half her engine bank worked, but it was obvious she was backing out of the shipyard.

Moff Lestrade made a tactical decision, looking over at the vessel backing away from its docks. "While of course you are declared to have 24 hours, we are not willing to see you abscond with these vessels which his Majesty requires you turn over to the Emperor. However, as a fair and generous sort of Governor I will be more than happy to donate a vessel to carry good Mr Da'shune wherever he wills immediately, the Imperial Customs Frigate Antithesis stands by to carry him away."

"If we do not see immediate signs of compliance, we will open fire." Lestrade had looked down the barrel of a gun before, all his life he had faced adversity and had gained power and position for his inability to see situations play out any other way than the one he wished. "I'll have no more of this cheek from you bloody Hapan chappies. Power down all propulsion systems and remain in place. I am your Sector Governor for crying out loud, you will obey my damn commands immediately, or suffer swift repercussions!"

The smaller ships moved close in to the Hapan vessels and all began to launch their compliment of TIE Fighters, sending 72 Fighters launching out into the void and positioning themselves close to the Hapan vessels also. The four Corvettes closely orbited the Tears of Amber with 24 TIE fighters and the two Gladiator-class vessels, Nebulon-B class Frigate and 3 Imperial Customs Frigates with their 48 TIE Fighters stood on hand with the Song of Sorrow.

"Engage any fighters which are launched" snapped Lestrade as he saw the TIEs form dense clouds about the Hapan vessels. He was taking the strategy of having the Hapan vessels surrounded by TIEs to A. Prevent a jump to hyperspace without damaging their hulls (although they were likely in the planet's gravitational well anyway) and to B. Be able to fire at any enemy fighters as they launched, before they had time to jink and weave away.

"Sir, they appear to be planning to detonate torpedoes on their hull if we open fire" a Lieutenant chimed in, relaying sensory information. "Well damn them, they will be destroying Imperial property and will be treated with extreme prejudice if they are seen to do so." spoke Lestrade, before snapping on the communicator.

"Hapan vessels, confirm purpose of torpedoes on your vessels hull. Remove these immediately. These are to be considered property of his Majesty from now on and will not be treated in such a cavalier manner."

Completely aware of the uproar the Moff appeared to be causing with the IHN fleet, the Addendum clarifying the requirement for deportation of convicts was dispatched to the Independent Hapan Nation Government so they would be aware that they would not all be sent back on the next boat as likely as not.

An addendum was all well and good, and indeed the addendum would likely cover all the junior officers on board the vessels and the crews and enlisted and so on and so forth, but the entire IHN government from Da'shune on down to his lowest cabinet member were not likely to be saved by such; the Consortium would want them back rather badly. Messages were sent to the Imperial fleet requesting that they stand down while attempts to mollify Captain Mo'sha's rash actions were being undertaken. The problem, however, was that Mo'sha had control of the vessels and Da'shune and his cabinet were planetside.

To Lestrade's ridiculous announcement, Mo'sha had but one simple reply: "We are not yet citizens of the Empire and as such, we are free people. You are not our sector governor." What Lestrade could not yet know was that neither craft held any compliment of fighters. For the time being, their hangar bays were shut quite tightly. He also could not know that the hyperdrives on both craft were currently inoperable, as the Hapan vessels initialized a jammer that would make reading their systems that much more difficult. Barring a direct movement behind the Tears of Amber, which still took no direct hostile action, the Imperials would have little in the way of stopping it from reversing fully from the shipyard and joining the Song of Sorrow.

When Lestrade called again upon the comms, Mo'sha's emotionless face came into focus. He was an older man, and even having listened to the pleas of the IHN government, he was not about to stand down. Three sons had perished in the escape from the Hapes Cluster, leaving him alone. He was not about to simply hand over all he had left to the Imperials. "Moff Lestrade, these vessels are property of the Independent Hapan Nation. The torpedoes are armed and I am prepared to detonate both vessels. If you fire upon us, I will detonate. If you attempt to board, I will detonate. We are taking leave of this system. You are more than welcome to it. Make your choice, sir. Would you be the Moff who lost the Empire its prize?"

"Damn you too" spoke Lestrade into the comm before nodding to his gunnery officer "Right, thats it, Jamm comms, Signal all ships to open fire" The communications arrays on the Imperial vessels then began to jam the communications from the Imperial Hapan Navy vessels and from Parein II itself. Lestrade had had a hard week, and unfortunately these Hapans would get the worst of it, they had humiliated him and taken his space, and he was only a year from retirement. Now, damn their eyes, they would not be allowed to move vessels in HIS damn space without his expressed permission.

The Imperial vessels opened fire with a rippling volley from all the gun points which had been able to be leveled at the Hapan vessels. However, this was not a true massed volley (with the intention to simply batter a vessel apart) all weapons had been targeted on key systems and with that targeted precision the Imperial Navy would open fire. The Gladiator-class vessels, moved in closer as they fired their light turbolaser barrage from all their guns. No torpedoes were fired at the Hapan vessels in order to spare them from the worst of the damage (although it was assumed their intent was to commit suicide anyway). All guns were targeted at power management systems, targeting computers and propulsion systems, aiming to cripple the vessels with the minimum possible level of bloodshed.

The TIEs would keep up a steady volley, over and over into the Hapan vessels as they flitted about just to help bring down shields and give the Hapans a headache as the quick firing Imperial turbolasers did their steady blast blast away on the Hapans.

The corvettes took positions around the Hapan vessel and orbited it in twos, on going one way one the other as they poured more fire onto the Tears of Amber's engines. "No", thought Lestrade, he would not lose the Empire its prize. The worst that could happen would be that they would simply have to extract the information from the Hapan citizens on the planet or their computers by force if necessary, the actual value of these vessels in themselves was minimal. Even if blasted apart the hulks could still be studied to an extent and Oriel's visit had made scans of the vessels before, in addition to the ones his own had made.

All that would be lost to the Empire by blowing up their own ships would be any sense that the Hapans could be trusted to govern themselves. After all, their leader had almost been murdered, their Officers would blow up their ships at the slightest provocation. What more could be expected of those who crawled on their very bellies before women... Cowards, schemers and suicides, well he would have none of it, no he would damn well not!

"Show these spavined eunuchs the Emperor's will" spoke Lestrade, all cards were now off the table and the table was having a sledgehammer taken to it.

It was likely as not that the Imperials ran the risk of firing into the shipyards as well; whose superstructure would offer some protection from the attacking corvettes' fire, for with only one angle of strike, it was easy enough to reinforce the rear shields, bringing them up to eighty percent. While they could only bring limited weapons to bear, the five aft-mounted turbolasers and quintet of turreted turbolasers focused on the closest customs corvette, which, being not made for such heavy combat, was likely to suffer. It was here that the Imperials might well see one advantage, as their cannons fired swifter than those on the Tears of Amber. Nonetheless, until the engines were disabled, the half-way out vessel would continue to fire, bringing more weapons into the fray as they cleared the dock.

By the time Lestrade had finished his statement of "Damn you too," the order would be given to engage. Ten proton torpedoes screamed from their tubes, followed by another ten seconds later, aimed to target Lestrade's vessel in a three-shot impact spread so as to maximize damage. The two triple ion cannons opened fire as well, and the rotation of forty turbolasers and forty ion cannons sang a massive barrage directed fully against the Invulnerable. It seemed that Mo'sha intended to put its name to the test. No power came to the Song of Sorrow; its engines were fully diverted to shields and as such, any strikes aimed there would, if they punched through, damage the vessel, but the engines were hardly in play.

Oriel's scans might well have helped, as well as Lestrade's, but with the unfamiliarity with Hapan technology and the lack of time in between Oriel's visit and departure to properly analyze such, many of their shots were off the mark. The shields, however, rapidly dropped from full to fifty-nine percent as the firing mounted against them. The Imperials might well notice at this point a goodly number of escape pods jettisoning and heading towards Parein II.

Lestrade's vessel was hit plumb on by the unexpected torpedo fire. The first volley would shake the vessel and make it quake from side to side as the unexpecting point defense lasers failed to shoot any down"Sir our shields are down" spoke a concerned officer "We should withdraw", the Moff was in no mood for withdrawal however and simply struck the Lieutenant sharply across the back of the head "Not one step back, coward!" spoke the old man as the Lieutenant's hat was cast to the ground.

Warning signals began to light up as the second volley of torpedoes came from the Hapan vessels the Point defence batteries, now with their stuff a little more in order opened up and managed to slice from the void a pair of the torpedoes but the others hit home, striking the Gladiator repeatedly on its hull, blasting long gouges out of it. The vessel shuddered once more and alerts began to sound on the bridge as it was reported that one of the torpedos would strike the bridge itself.

Moff Lestrade's vision was filled with white as the torpedo struck his bridge, momentarily he felt a flash of heat across him, but then knew no more as all officers on the bridge were killed in the resulting cataclysm. Crippled the batteries of the Invulnerable cruised on with its prior momentum. Its gunners still fired but there was now little central coordination as the vessel's reactor began to overload with the last of the torpedo hits disrupting key coolant lines. Marked with glowing molten sections where the torpedoes had hit, the Gladiator began to succumb to the Gravitational pull of Parein II, losing altitude with a course that would likely cause the burned up hulk to crash into a mountain range on a continent distant from the Hapan settlement. Some escape pods departed, but all too few as the reactor's emergency shut down systems began to cut power sporadically to all systems.

Line Captain Alarius was shocked by the appalling power of the Independent Hapan's firepower but was not deterred. Ordering his vessel the Invincible and the the Lacerator kept up their volleys (and the fighter's combined fire would likely begin to cause problems too. The escape pods were left and not engaged as they attempted to flee the vessel.

"Keep up our bombardment on the Hapan vessels, instruct our corvettes at the docks to move to firing positions where they can bring all weapons to bear on the Hapan ship". His orders were simple, follow the Moff's last orders and capture or destroy these Hapan vessels. As soon as this was done, a very uncomfortable fate would likely be in store for the Hapans for this atrocious killing of Imperial Naval Officers and Crewmen. The midden had hit the windmill. "Instruct the Lacerator to use its tractor beams to attempt to stabilize the orbit of the Invulnerable, but not at the expense of firepower." spoke the Line Captain again, pondering his position, he was a Deralian and a patriot, to withdraw would be cowardice, despite the loss of the flagship today could still be a victory.

The Tears of Amber's stern was awash with flame and damage. Before the engines had been knocked out, the momentum had been enough to carry the ship free of the shipyard. Its turbolasers still sang their song, slower to the uptempo beat of their Imperial counterparts. One second, the Nova was hurling bolts of death against the corvettes and then... a fireball, massive as the proton torpedoes detonated, consumed the ship. Fragments of metal and debris peppered the shipyard, but no casualties would fall upon the people of Parein II. A lucky shot from one of the corvettes had penetrated deep enough to prematurely detonate the warheads, resulting in the massive and rather extensive destruction of the vessel and its remaining crew.

The Song of Sorrow was another matter, though. Pulling twenty-five percent power from all cannons, the shields were bolstered from their falling status. The stinging hits from the TIE fighters would accumulate as well, but that was a worry for the long run. Now, the Hapan targeting computers on board this particular vessel were not adequate for continually engaging multiple vessels. The Lacerator, though, was the new primary target. A salvo of ten torpedoes were aimed at the vessel, this time in a two-strike pattern, for the vulnerable central spar that connected the front and aft portions. The triple ion cannons and the forty turbolaser and ion sang out towards the same target. The ship rocked and Mo'sha called for a damage report. One of their triple ion cannons had been disabled by a close-range shot that had punched through, from the Invincible, more than likely.

"Get me a lock on that damned ship!" Mo'sha roared. His remaining bridge crew who had not fled slaved at their stations, working to modulate power output and weapons and targeting as the shields raised from fifty-nine to sixty-seven and then back down to fifty, then to forty-six.

The Corvettes, stunned by their success moved with their fighter escort swiftly to the aid of the Lacerator and the Invincible, their turbolasers singing out across the void as they swiftly came about and made for the Song of Sorrow with all speed. Except one, the Vixen and a half dozen TIE Fighters began to move down into the Parein II atmosphere, moving to the location previously designated by Oriel as his old landing point, targetting the settlement while taking care to jink around enough to proof them from fire, staying high at the moment, just taking precise aim.

The Lacerator, shockingly, did not suffer nearly so much damage as the larger Invulnerable had done, the laser cannons studded across its large hull blasted many of the torpedoes from the air before they were able to contact the shields. Added to this the point defence fire from the nearby Gladiator and the interceptions of the TIE Fighters flitting around the void, it came off rather well. However its shields were demolished by the fire, bringing them down to 15%, power was redirected from other non critical systems, managing to bring it up from 15% to 22% at the expense of helping the good ship Invulnerable.

Captain Alarius considered the situation and nodded to a communications officer "Inform high command of the situation, request all nearby forces come to our aid" "Open a channel to the Hapans, instruct them they may surrender now and they have my word they will be treated like prisoners of war, inform them there is very little chance of quarter being given after this point. I am a reasonable man, but unless you surrender now there is little I can do to help you. If you do not stand down immediately Hapan vessels, we will be forced to take action against your land positions and governmental structures."

The stabilisation efforts had succeeded in keeping the Gladiator out of the atmosphere for now, but it would require further tugging back into orbit within two hours. The lifeless hulk drifted onwards as its engineering crews shut down the reactor and vented the radiation into space, seeking to cool it and prevent a critical meltdown. However, with multiple hull breaches, a degrading orbit and very little in the way of back up power, things were looking very ill indeed. The few remaining officers who had survived the impact attempted to recoordinate affairs between them, but little was done due to lack of power.

The Invincible kept up its volley, noticing the Hapan vessel had to rotate to be able to fire effectively due to its speed, the Lacerator and the Invincible began to move on a course which would place them above and below the Hapan vessel (with it as a point of reference), moving them out of the arc of fire from its turbolasers on its main disk (as they could not be easily oriented up or down). The Gladiator also took the step of moving counter to the direction of the rotating weapons as it moved up firing as it went, shielding it from future fire. The spritely Lacerator too, in making these evasive manouvres would make itself a harder target for any more proton torpedoes.

The Customs Frigates kept up their fire too, as did the fighters (while intercepting where they could. The battle raged on, as hot as ever.

No fire came from the settlement; they were not opposed to the Imperials, after all.

The Song of Sorrow had enough oomph left in it to fire a final volley of torpedoes at the EF76 as it maneuvered; quick, but not fully quick enough to escape that parting shot. Several of the turbolasers and ion cannons were out of action as well, though the remaining triple cannon fired relentlessly at the Lacerator. The call came through to Mo'sha, who answered it. Behind him, the bridge was empty. From the field of the holo, several bodies with blaster holes in their backs could be spotted near the bridge exit. Mo'sha himself was wounded; a nasty cut oozing blood down his right cheek.

"Fire on them then," he raged, "Da'shune was a fool to bring us here! I'll not surrender my ship to the likes of you, lackey!" Cutting the communication only served to heighten the moment, but the Song of Sorrow's cannons fell silent. There was a moment and then the ship seemed to expand as the numerous remaining proton torpedoes were detonated; not only those placed, but those remaining in their magazines. The explosion flashed outwards, likely catching any TIE fighters too close, but more than likely the Imperial pilots had the sense to fight from afar. A curious thing happened then: the pulse-mass mines were ruptured as the craft detonated, and it would seem as if the explosion was being reversed, everything being pulled in and compacted; crushed by the simultaneous activation of sixteen pulse-mass mines in one spot, acting almost as the pulse-mass generator at Malachor V had acted so long ago. When all was said and done, only a ball of crumpled, twisted wreckage would remain.
