Deschain was more than a little surprised when a single Blastboat flew in past the cordon line that usually kept any aerial vehicles away from the Imperial Palace. He was even more surprised when it was not fired upon, but cursed in rage as Animus leaped out and to relative safety aboard the ship. Oh, he'd certainly trapped himself though. He wasn't like to get offworld anytime soon in that craft, especially with Deschain freeing a hand to call in the sighting. It was likely as well that if the craft hovered about for too long, it would be blown clean out of the sky. For the moment, unfortunately, it would seem Animus had escaped and that Deschain would need to report the failure of his capture to Palpatine; an item he did not look forward to.

A balcony nearby provided him with an entrance back into the Imperial Palace, where he made for the nearest turbolift that would connect him to a place where he'd be able to gain access to the Emperor's throne room again, if it were not sealed off.

No notification would be necessary for, as previously stated, TIE patrols and airspeeders were by now impenetrably dense over the Imperial Palace grounds—grounds that were replete with turbolasers and other anti-air emplacements to safeguard it in the event of assault. There was some confusion however as word was first received that the escaped Jedi (it's doubtful that warnings would be broadcast about an escaped "Inquisitor," since it's not something the Empire would want to admit and nor, for that matter, was the existence of the Inquisitors) was "on the blastboat." A duo of TIE's that had been on approach to inquire about the blastboat's presence instead dropped into escort formation beside it, assuming it would be delivering Animus back to Imperial custody.

But Brandt found something unusual about this, from his perch in his office several kilometers away, observing the scene as best he could through a pair of macrobinoculars (there was so much to see on Coruscant one would be remiss not to have a pair of binoculars handy if one had a window view of the city). The Moff couldn't ignore the fact that the Jedi, clearly, had leapt willingly onto the Skipray. He pondered this for a moment and then made inquiries into who was piloting it (some sort of operator number presumably being necessary to turn the thing on).

In the meantime, the blastboat would receive landing instructions for one of the Palace's landing pads mere minutes away. The TIE's would remain in escort formation to guide it on its flight path. Indeed, additional TIE fighters would follow as did the varied airspeeders, etc. Meanwhile, a general alarm having been raised, a mighty shield generator would begin to rumble to life—in moments, as soon as it was warmed up, it would project a massive shield over the Imperial Palace grounds similar to the one that would be seen a decade later on Hoth.

The Inquisitor knew the Imperial Procedures for the Imperial Center in event of an attack. Animus going rogue was considered an attack. Now he understood why the enemies of the Empire considered this tactic to be extremely annoying. Sure, training helped the Empire become superior over every resistance groups in this galaxy. Yet, they employ a tactic where defeating an enemy in numbers would be used in almost every situation.

Fleeing into the space was not an option. Especially when there were multiple TIE fighters and airspeeders in the air. However, luckily for him and Mira, big of them knew Imperial procedures. Which means it would take about a minute for the shield to warm up so it can surround the Imperial Palace. There weren't much time left, so he barked at Mira. "Head for the underlevels. We don't have much time, hit it!"

The Inquisitor would utilize the Force to help use the turrets. A couple of concussion missiles would spring out of the launchers, targeting a couple of TIE fighters flying by in front of the Skipray, while using the turrets to fire at the third one to clear out a path for Mira to push the Skipray to the best it can. "Don't forget to weave through all the traffic on the way down to make it difficult for them to hit us!"

Whether Mira would betray Animus or not, now she has no choice but to help the former Inquisitor now that he had fired. Not would have to bring the speed all he way to the best this ship can do.

"I know, I know..." She muttered as she piloted the ship quickly into the traffic lanes. How many Imperial citizens would they risk just to get to Animus? Mira jerked on the throttle to drop the ship deeper and veered off between a couple of transports before she started zig zagging down into the underlevels. The traffic lanes were heavy, but she used the ship the best that she could in order to get them where they needed to go as fast as possible.

Of course, during all of this, she wondered exactly what had transpired. And then the ISB agent wondered what kind of praise there would be in turning the Inquisitor in. It might have been better for her to do so, as she was pretty sure that they would both be killed on sight if they were caught. Him for whatever he did, and her for helping him escape...or attempt to.

As he walked the silent halls back to the throne room, Deschain meditated silently on his failure to capture Animus in this particular instance. He replayed scene after scene in his mind, but there was no excuse. He should have been able to get the man, damnit, but for bad luck, which struck even those who used the Force. It was whether or not the Emperor would chose to believe him. All too soon, he found himself before the doors of the room which he almost feared to walk. Squaring his shoulders, he advanced, to be allowed admittance by the royal guard that stood before them. As soon as he entered, he advanced four paces and dropped to one knee.

"My lord, forgive the report of temporary failure I must give. The rogue Animus has briefly escaped my grasp into a waiting starship; he must have help we did not know of within Imperial circles, or someone we did not foresee. Rest assured, my lord, that he will be captured, brought to your justice, and dealt with accordingly as all traitors to the Empire are."

Emperor Palpatine had been facing away, not through the shattered window that was now covered by a blast window, but through the circular window that sat behind his throne; his gaze occupied by the distant traffic on Imperial Center and by the closer movements of the Skipray and its pursuing TIE fighters. Deschain could not see the faint smile that tugged at Palpatine's wrinkled lips as he watched the cannon fire; the explosions. "Resourceful..." He whispered, too low for the High Inquisitor to pick up. Oh, Trevor Fenn, Animus, would still have to pay. He would still need to be severed from the Force and then made a very public example of how the Empire dealt with Jedi who would harm good, Imperial citizens. That would come in time though; all in good, due time.

"You have done well, High Inquisitor Deschain. Do not let this... brief incident become a dark blot on your record. Find him. Hunt him down. As long as it takes and as much as you must do, you will retrieve Animus and bring him before me... and I shall show him the true power of the dark side. Go, High Inquisitor. Consult with Grand Vizier Pestage about your reward."

Behind him, the High Inquisitor was already forgotten as Palpatine let his mind drift back to the considerations of the Empire, and of the Sith.

(( Bear with me just a few more hours on this, will you? ))

As previously stated the Imperial Palace was two kilometers across and surrounded by kilometers of parade grounds and, beyond that, the offices of the vast Imperial bureaucracy. The tiny blastboat would have kilometers and kilometers to travel before reaching anything like an access point to Coruscant's underlevels. This was a high class region of the planet surrounded by diplomatic and business districts and not somewhere a person could immediately disappear into the forgotten depths of the planet elsewhere. Moreover, as previously stated, the Palace and the surrounding grounds boasted massive numbers of turbolasers and other anti-air emplacements, and, as previously stated, TIE fighters were now "impenetrably dense over the Imperial Palace grounds."

The blastboat would be fired upon mercilessly as it broke away from its escort and opened fire on it, too. It would be a long and hot gauntlet for the tiny ship to run and it was highly unlikely it could possibly make it through the heaviest concentration of firepower outside of an Imperial Star Destroyer. Turbolaser fire was so thick in the skies around the blastboat that even a few TIE fighters were vaporized by mistake—a small price to pay to capture the fugitive Jedi and what seemed, now, to be a traitor assisting him. The blastboat would be pummelled again, and again, and again, and again. The shields couldn't possibly hold for more than a few seconds, and once they went the tiny hull would take such a pounding that it'd glow from the inside. Alarms would barely be heard over the constant roar. Coruscant's cityscape outside the blastboat's viewport would shake violently as the ship shuddered around its occupants.

In a few seconds they would crash on the parade grounds or be destroyed, or both.

---------------------------------------------
Sure enough, the Skipray—which had never transmitted its clearance, not that it much mattered since it'd opened fire on TIE fighters—was shot down, predictably. It burst into flames, smoke filling it inside and billowing from the many holes that had been blasted in its hull. One of many tractor beams in the vicinity would "catch" the ship as it plummeted to the parade grounds, however, suspending it in mid-air long enough for a firespeeder to pull up beside it and douse it in flame retardant. Even then, a turret or a TIE would occasionally fire on the prone ship for good measure. More than one of these would be ion cannons, which knocked out whatever might still be working on the Skipray. With the help of the tractor beam, the Skipray would be placed on the parade grounds amid squads and squads of stormtroopers with blaster rifles at the ready, set for stun, of course; they knew how to deal with a Jedi.

It probably wouldn't be necessary, however. If Inquisitor Animus remained conscious and uninjured throughout the pounding the Skipray had taken, he couldn't have been conscious for long breathing so much smoke. If he or Mira staggered out of the Skipray, no doubt they would be stunned many times over. If not, the stormtroopers would blast open the hatch and stun them regardless. Keenly aware that the Emperor was watching, the stormtroopers would be quite thorough.

Animus would find himself back in Imperial custody in no time. If the Emperor were in a good mood, he might have been amused to bring Animus once again before him in his throne room. But no doubt the Emperor wasn't in a good mood, and would have no more patience for the Inquisitor. Most likely, Animus would be secured in a cell deep in the bowels of the Imperial Palace or even, perhaps, in Coruscant's secret and subterranean prison, Lusankya. Either way, it was probable that the Inquisitor—now former Inquisitor, surely—would receive another visit from Inquisitor Deschain and even, perhaps, the Emperor. Whatever mercy the Emperor might have had in mind for him would be gone now, vanished with Animus through his throne room window.

What would happen to Mira remained to be seen. Clearly, the life of this Imperial Intelligence agent was so thoroughly devoted to Animus that, incredibly, she was willing to sacrifice it for him. For no one could have believed it was possible to escape from the Imperial Palace in broad daylight. There was a tragic quality to this, to be sure. It was possible that she and Animus would be imprisoned together (it was a classic Imperial Intelligence dirty trick, as Mira would probably know; imprison the suspects together in seeming isolation and eavesdrop on their conversation for evidence to use against one or both of them).

In any case, Imperial forces had performed, if not impressively, not unimpressively either. They had shot down a ship with redundant and overwhelming firepower and took its occupants into custody with redundant and overwhelming force. It would have been surprising if the Imperials had failed in this task. But now, the traitors were left for Inquisitor Deschain and the Emperor. Brandt lowered his binoculars and contented himself to hear about what had happened through the regular gossip grapevine.

(( I assumed it's going to pick up where it was before Animus jumped out the window, this being alluded to in the last post. ))

Animus was once again in front of the Emperor, bound, imprisoned fully with binders and, as an added bonus, Deschain behind him with an activated lightsaber mere inches from the back of the man's neck. If there was further incentive for Animus to remain still, Deschain would provide it in the form of a swift beheading and consider it a job well done. Nonetheless, the Emperor had something more planned for this particular Inquisitor.

The female who had been captured with Animus had been dragged off to somewhere; likely some form of interrogation cell or somewhat. She was none of Deschain's concern. This, though, was, and this was Deschain at the height of enjoying his work. For now, he waited only to see what the Emperor's wrath and judgment would cast upon Animus.

If Palpatine had been annoyed before, Animus' actions, the very cheek of breaking the sanctity of Palpatine's throne room, destroying a very nice window and above all, the act of defiance itself had thrown the Sith into a dark rage. As the High Inquisitor stood over the beaten and bloodied and above all defeated former Inquisitor, Palpatine's eyes fairly glowed with the essence of the dark side coursing through him. The Emperor, though, was a master of self-control, at least in most cases. Now, his hands ached to unleash the torment of lightning that would scorch Animus into an unrecognizable husk, they twitched with the call of the dark side, begging to be released and Palpatine could fairly see Animus rising into the air, writhing and choking as the inevitability of death closed in on him through slow suffocation of choking. But still, all of that ended in death, and death was far, far too good for the useless heap of a man who had once worn the title of Inquisitor.

"You are stripped of your title, Trevor Fenn." Palpatine's voice was the soft caress of death, yet at the same time a powerful whip-crack that would rock the other two Force-users to their bones. "You no longer bear the dark side name of Animus. You no longer hold the mantle of Inquisitor. You have forsaken this, when you failed in your simple tasks, and you have forsaken it moreover when you disobeyed my orders and attempted to strike down one in my service." Palpatine's eyes flicked briefly upwards at High Inquisitor Deschain before looking back down at Animus; no, at Trevor Fenn, the puddle of wasted flesh who was at the mercy of the Sith. "There will be no quick death, no painless release for you. You will serve as an example, still."

Palpatine raised his hands, expecting the High Inquisitor to step back as the dark energies coursed upwards and outwards. "I strip you of the Force, Trevor Fenn... and may you live a long, slow life without it." A dark side twisted variant of sever Force, Palpatine cast outwards the dark energy that would coalesce about Animus, sapping him, sinking into him like a thousand hot needles puncturing his already bruised and battered flesh. Onwards and inwards the feeling would go, digging deeper and deeper with unimaginable pain as in Animus' mind, a dark wall, black and foreboding would come between him and his consciousness. Taller than the highest peak or building, longer than forever and thicker than any armor, the relentless assault would slide over Animus' ability to see, touch, feel and use the Force... until there was nothing left and the dark side receded back into Palpatine. Visibly exhausted, the Emperor turned about, moving to sit heavily upon his throne.

"Take him away, High Inquisitor... make sure he is seen as an example. You have done the Empire a great service... you have done me a great service. Speak with the Grand Vizier... he will grant you whatever reward you choose."
