A last shot for a man on the decline

The man had never regretted leaving the Empire when they were first established. He didn't regret attacking the Marathon above the orbit. He regretted the way he left his fighters to fend for themselves. He regretted not being able to contain the decline in morale after leaving the battle. Many of his crew had left him for a second chance at life. The former Captain of the Republic had decided to stick to his literally sinking ship. Because they didn't have a lot of credits, the damage they took from the battle was slowly expanding because they couldn't repair. They have no fighters, severely undermanned when it comes to running the Venator star destroyer.

He knew at some point, they wouldn't be able to put up a fight. Dustil would rather die in a battle than to die under a crumbling ship. Therefore, he decided to give his ship a final chance at glory. The Freedom would enter into hyperspace after several moments of dialing in a set of coordinates. He wanted a decent fight, and he could get that. How? Luckily for him, his "intelligence network" hasn't completely disappeared. An informat on Lok had informed him of a Lorridian convoy heading for Ereesus Sector, and when they had left and how fast they travel in hyperspace. That took a lot of mathematics and engineering to figure out the best place to intercept.

A few hours later, the star destroyer dropped out of hyperspace. Dropping into an empty space, Captain Diabetes would wait for the convoy to arrive. They did, after some waiting. With his crew severely undermanned, they had to put in several computer programs in most of the turrets and batteries to maintain a good aim. "Fire!" He ordered, several of its batteries would be aimed for a freighter. The purpose was to show how much fight he has in him and draw a bigger ship to the vicinity.

The Lorrdian convoy was en route from Lorrd to the Ereesus Sector and on the way, it had planned to make a stop within the Jerne System, largely to avoid any possible Argazdan interference. The convoy in question was, much like the ill-fated convoy before it, carrying a large number of food supplies to Destrando City. Made up of several BFF-1 bulk freighters, this one was better guarded by a pair of Mobquet medium transports. Upon arrival though into the Jerne System, they did not expect an attack. When the first of six BFF-1 freighters was struck and destroyed in an instant, Convoy Captain Luke Masters aboard the Mobquet transport Easy 1 was the first to snap out orders.

"All ships, evasive action! Comms, get me a message back to Lorrd Control. Tell them we're under attack! Weapons, get me a lock on whatever is shooting at us and fire back. What the hell is out there people?"

As Easy 1 accelerated and veered to the side, the sight of the damaged Venator crossed Masters' view from the front screen. A moment later, the sensor operator called out to him, "It's a Venator! IFF reads as the Freedom! It's a rebel ship, sir, and we need to get out of here. Loader 1 is completely gone. We won't be able to survive against this."

Masters swore for a moment. "Tell all ships to run as fast as they can. Get to an escape vector." That wasn't saying much considering how slow the BFF-1 traveled, even at top speed. "Fire all concussion missiles and tell Easy 2 to do the same." The Mobquet and its sister vessel would begin locking in a targeting solution and start firing their concussion missiles, thirty-two per vessel, at the Venator as quickly as possible. With their maneuvering though, they were likely to only get off about five apiece before they had to break lock and maneuver.

The word sent to Lorrd Control arrived rather quickly. The convoy was promised reinforcements as soon as possible. It would be about ten minutes or so though.

That would be a total of ten concussion missiles coming toward the Venator. Even with the weapons the Venator currently have, they could fend off most of the missiles with the turbolaser batteries. However, a couple stray shots was able to impact the ship. But it was far from being destroyed. There were very small explosions at two different places on the left side of the ship. "Fire at will!" He wanted to press the attack, calculating the remaining freighters' trajectory to keep shooting at them. The more damage the Venator was inflicting, more likely the reinforcements are gonna come by faster.

A second and then a third BFF-1 were destroyed as they tried in vain to flee. The Mobquet transports, meanwhile, had gained some distance and were able to come about for a long firing run."Lock all warheads on that ship and prepare to fire," Masters called out. One by one, the concussion missiles shot from their tube. This time it was no small volley, and Masters knew he was risking his life, as well as the lives of his crew and the crew aboard Easy 2 by staying in position so long, but the end result was a total of fifty-four concussion missiles fired from the two ships at the Venator, a not inconsiderable number. If only they were proton torpedoes.

The remaining trio of BFF-1 freighters had spread out, lumbering away still as best they could. It wasn't as if they could even fight, but unless the Freedom was actively chasing them, they'd be able to get out of range of its weapons... eventually. The Mobquet transports, faster but still not particularly speedy, stood the best chance of getting away, and with their ordnance exhausted and down to only laser cannons, they didn't have much other choice but to run.
