Senators,

For a long time I have enjoyed feasting on the flesh of creatures from all across the galaxy. Most especially delectable Neimoidians and Mon Calamari. I love them braised Home Style with a Cajun Sauce.. delicious. A bar-b-qued Twi'lek head tail... delicious, and nutritious.

Anyway yes. On Dantooine we have long had the following law in place "A Citizen may sell his body in the event of his death prior to his death, the body will then be permitted to be used for culinary purposes or otherwise by the owner after the Citizens death."

While this is legal on Dantooine, it is not legal on some worlds, nor to my knowledge is the trade of corpses.

Essentially, I pay a Calamari a few thousand credits, and then own his body when he dies, not unreasonable. But sadly, there are too few Calamari on Dantooine to satisfy my appetites and as such I would ask that corpses be classed by the New Republic as a commodity and allow me to trade with the relevant authorities and individuals in order to procure my food.

You say 'This is disgusting, an abomination' but thats a ridiculous humanocentric viewpoint, I can name a dozen sentient species that eat their own dead, including Neimoidians, Colicoids even on occasion, humans, as such I would just like to extend this one step further and allow me to trade so I can eat other peoples dead.

Thus I submit this motion.

Pardon me for not greeting like I usually do, but are you insane?! Do you know how many people could get pissed off at you for even considering this? I apologize if this seem out of order, but what in the right mind makes you feel obliged to suggest this kind of thing? Why don't you try and walk up to a Mon Calamari or a Neimoidian, offer to pay a few thousand credits to own their bodies once they dies? That doesn't sound so bad, right? Until they find out that their bodies would be put to use as food to someone else. Have you ever wondered why it's considered illegal on some worlds? Because there are people that could go ahead and kill a living being without having to justify their means, just to feed someone else. If your people wants to eat this kind of thing, it's their right. If the Hutts want to eat, be my guest. But to have it legalized within the New Republic, I strongly disagree. I vote against the bill.

Senator Fowlkes, I believe you're being unfair to this bill. The Senator from Dantooine is correct that there are many worlds where the consumption of sentient species after their deaths (with prior consent, of course) is legal and has been in practice for millenia. Some species do agree to a culinary provision in their wills if it means that their family might have more money when they pass away, and I find nothing wrong with this if that is what the sentient has freely chosen. It is, essentially, the same as donating your body to scientific research.

The only difference that this measure proposes is to legalize the transport of these corpses over interstellar borders (which is currently only legal for the purposes of research and repatriation). I vote in favor of corpse commerce, because I believe in freedom; the freedom of sentients to make their own decisions regarding their lives and their bodies.

Senator Sir Reuke Cambrist, Brentaal
Chairman of the Commerce Council

In order to keep my utter rage at this legislation in check, I must keep this short. Since removing this bill from the floor would be lengthier than the vote, I vote Against.

I am not sure that there are words to express my opposition of this bill. So obviously, I vote against such a legislation.

Senator Forte, what is wrong with this legislation? To you also Senator Thanatos.

Is this because you simply are espousing a viciously humanocentric and indeed humanoidocentric policy of ignoring the rights and traditions of many cultures. Hundreds of species throughout the galaxy find it their tradition to feast on sentient flesh in the event it is found already dead. Indeed it is even the practice in many human cultures! You are judging those not of your own species by your own species' standards.

Not only are you voting in favour of speciesism by voting against this motion, you are also voting against individual rights. Why do I not, as a sovereign being, have the right to sell my physical form in the event of my death. I do not need it, indeed I would rather that I was usefully consumed instead of beings going hungry.

If this motion fails, I will test the matter in the courts as I believe the prohibition of this trade is illegal, immoral and unjust to every Hutt, Neimoidian, Geonosian, Colicoid, Gammorean and every other being who eats meat from (already dead) sentient beings.

“While you may rest assured that I find this, not only morally wrong, and nauseating, I can find no law that would bar such a practice. If one wishes to sell his or her remains for the purpose of...dining, who are we to stand in the way of its rights.

“Reluctantly I vote IN FAVOR.”
