Senators,

For a long time, Mr Kruus has made huge contributions to the artistic life of the New Republic, single handedly patronising the New Republic Opera House, the New Republic Poetry Society and numerous other institutions.

He has written operas with patriotic themes, he wrote the anthem of the New Republic, he has written multiple other critically acclaimed musical pieces. He has also proven himself a true patriot both in his combat service against the remnant and his diligent employment as Chair and a Member of the Economics Council for nigh on a decade, as well as a decade of service in the Senate. He has also embraced peace now it has come and loyally worked towards burying the hatchet with the Remnant. Furthermore, he was a signatory of the Prosperity Alliance treaty, one that has resulted in a great deal of economic cooperation in the galaxy, and has indeed brought a great deal of what it intended to bring, Prosperity.

As such, I propose that Senator Luneray Kruus, a Paragon of New Republican Virtue is granted the title of Poet Laureate of the New Republic.

I'll vote in favor as soon as Senator Kruus pays the reparations that the planet Acherin is demanding, to compensate for the goods that he and his fellow conspirators stole from that world, with force. In the meantime, I am opposed to the Chief of State's elevation of a political ally to a position of prestige. I think it's unseemly for President Gavrisom to be taking sides in this Acherin dispute while it's still being litigated, by not only declaring Senator Kruus "a paragon of New Republican virtue," but by awarding him and Senator Cambrist medals for the deeds in question.

Senator Fitzgerald,

Certain properties were seized from the former Government of Acherin at a time of war, by the well established legal principles of Inter-planetary law. However, I think you will find the case in session is not directly against Mr Kruus who was in fact the Senator of Neimoidia, not its legislature (who issued the declaration of war).

Mr Kruus may be a political ally, but he certainly is the foremost poet of our time, and even if it were not for his actions at Acherin, that would not change the fact.

It would be churlish of me not to reward the being who wrote the New Republic Anthem, the writer of over a dozen acclaimed novels and the greatest patron of the arts this century with this honourary position, from which he can continue to elegise with the full backing of the New Republic.

I thank you for the suggestion. I may be a political ally of the Chief, but I am, I would say, a capable poet. And could the Chief of State be expected to appoint a war-hawk Poet Laureate? I think not, indeed it would send completely the wrong message to the Remnant.

I accept the nomination and vote in favour, if only because of the facts, I am a truly brilliant poet, massive contributor to the arts. And there is no other suitable candidate who has been so poetically active or sucessful in the last decade.

A splendid proposal, and a splendid nomination. There is truly no finer patron of the arts than our own Senator Luuneray Kruus, who is, indeed, a fine poet, writer, and even composer in his own right. I support this measure.

Senator Kruus' belligerent defense of weapons of mass destruction on this evening's debate on the warship ban have led me to question his commitment to peace and, thus, his appropriateness to represent the New Republic's policies in so prestigious a position as Poet Laureate. As the Senator has said, "it would send completely the wrong message to the Remnant." Instead, I recommend for the position Hari Seldona, the famous and prolific Alderaanian poet who has shown us over the years that anyone, even the modest, can still speak beautifully—and powerfully—in adversity (and even without considerable credits and publicity).

Senator,

Her poems, while nice, in a quaint way are hardly the stirring stuff we should have.

Allow me to quote Chancellor Troosevelt 'Tread softly, and carry a big stick', while we should strive for peace, we must also be ready for war should it come. We must also be able to maintain a strong anti-piracy and anti-smuggling policy, and I would note that the presence of Kruus in Neimoidian space has reduced all of these to none.

I respectfully disagree with Senator Kruus. His poems, songs and operas, while certainly patriotic, are nonetheless primarily glorifications of war. Hari Seldona writes with an unwavering commitment to peace, and she has lived this principle even in the face of tremendous adversity (the destruction of her homeworld, hounding by stormtroopers, and so on). Her insistence on her principles—eloquent, gentle perhaps, but also persistent—especially in the tragic and harrowing context of her life, is far more powerful than any weapon of war, and far more subversive.

This is exactly the point that President Gavrisom has made, in his own eloquent words, that "hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction." So no, Senator, I do not believe we should speak softly and carry a big stick behind our backs. I remain in support of Ms. Seldona of Alderaan.

On the points made by Senator Fitzgerald and Senator Vanden, I also vote Against this nomination.

I do also vote In Favor of Senator Vanden's nomination of Hari Seldona.

Let's keep this short and sweet, shall we? Citing the opposition, I vote Against Kruus' nomination. I also give a vote In Favor of the alternative nominanee, Hari Seldona...of whom I am a personal fan. Hypocrites should not have their work elevated and praised...and I find it sad that such a greedy, imperialistic man wrote our current national anthem...and that Chief Gavrisom was so short-sighted in this decision.

I see Senator Kruus has the endorsement of Jamulon "Corpse Trade" "Legalize Slavery" "29 Censures" Tiure the Hutt, whose appreciation for the fine arts is infamous, I'm sure.

Allow me to demonstrate my skill. Here is a poem I composed this morning on the speeder ride to the Senate, in summation of my views of the New Republic.

Republica, spread your golden wings
Sail on freedom's wind, across the sky.
Great bird, with your golden dreams
flying high, flying high.

Restless one in a galaxy of change,
keeping dreams aloft in the rain.
Spirit free, soaring through the clouds
of time, of time.

Republica, you must keep dreaming now
Dreaming the promised vow of your pioneers
Republica, keep on flying now.
Keep your spirit free.
Facing new frontiers.

Republica, spread your golden wings
Sail on freedom's wind across the sky.
Great bird with your golden dreams,
Flying high, flying high,
Flying high, flying high!

Senator Kruus,

I do not mean to disrespect you, but your motives behind the Blockade of Acherin among several other things are questionable. While you have indeed proven yourself to be a patriot, your motives certainly are questionable. I support Senator Fitzgerald in that you have endorsed such ridiculous bills as in "Corpse Trade" to name one out of a few. While it was nice of Chief of State to propose Senator Kruus, it is best if the imagery of a Poet-Laureate is to be in someone like Hari Seldona. I apologize, but I must vote against Senator Kruus and vote in favor of Hari Seldona.
