Those British lawyers are a bunch of Edmund Burkes. American independence? Common sense, I say.

But don't get any ideas, Texas.

Its much nicer being British.

We are able to laugh at ourselves a lot more and are less reverent about almost everything. Have 25 days a year paid holiday.. We have free healthcare and dental. We have a welfare system which doesn't let you die or become homeless. We never had segregation/jim crow laws etc, we never banned interracial marriage (Olaudah Equiano married a British girl in 1792!). The Beatles, Queen, David Bowie, etc. We invented Viagra! Matches, the Toaster, Flush Toilets, Soda, Sunglasses and the Vacuum Cleaner! (All British Inventions). We have amazing tea (many varieties of).

We are amusing and cheerful while having a self aware sense of dread at the futility of existence. From rolling hills to rolling cheeses to folk music and morris dancing, we aren't afraid to be eccentric. We don't fly flags all the time, or say a pledge of allegiance or weep for our national anthem (what a dirge!) - we are instead quietly confident in our own virtues (such as they are) as an arbitrary unit of people. We have a sense of empathy with those at the bottom of society and are not herded like sheep by the rich at the top (*cough*Poor people supporting Tea Party? More like turkeys voting for christmas!*cough*). Our politicians are (on the whole) generally pretty pragmatic and are willing to set party differences aside for the good of the nation.

We do not respect or defer to government, nation or flag, we are proud of our past while being aware of the present.

And we can drink any 3 other nations under the table.

You do realize though, that had the first revolution failed in the 1700s, there would be another revolution, and another, and another until the colonies were free.

I hear Brits were bastards.

Killing those who didn't believe in what they believed in.

Helping a bunch of dumb ass hicks so that the confederacy could win the war and slavery would be legal.

Well sure, itself having conked out of the whole "empire" phase Britain has good reason not to take itself seriously anymore.

... clearly, you need to visit California. Your criticism of Americans as reverent and bellicose can only be based on that "other" half of the country you've limited yourself to heretofore, and of which your description is indeed quite apt. However, needless to say, I recommend Northern California, where we ride mopeds, where any climate you'd like on a given day is a reasonable distance away, and where marijuana is an accepted fact of life for all races and classes of people.

In all fairness you have a concert hall there filled with very nostalgic people. Come here - you won't see one British flag on the average drive through of any given british city. Wheras in the US you will see dozens on every car dealership etc.

As for the waving the people off for the falklands - we love one thing above all of them - A good scrap. Thus the urge to fight kinda comes above them.

And more than 50% of Scots want to stay in the Union!

As for California, I was thinking of visiting this lovely place called Redding..
