Lamar... you, sir, are wrong. Dead wrong. Do I say that because I am distantly related to Ray Park? Yes, yes I do. Do I say that because I have a mancrush on Ray Park? Why yes I do. Do I say that because Darth Maul is still the most bad ass, most Sith-like, non-whiny, non-emo bitch, and only to date motivated by hatred and power rather than sheer insanity among the Sith? Again, yes I do. That last one probably doesn't make much grammatical sense, but you get what I'm going for.

No disrespect to Ray Park. But the film, not the books, is the highest form of canon and it doesn't mention anything about Maul or his past or his motivations. For all we know he does Sidious's bidding for lollipops. As a character, there's just nothing there. Which is okay if he's a "phantom menace" who dies after only a few minutes of screen time and practically no dialogue. But let's not pretend he's important to the Star Wars plot at all. Considering no mention is made of Maul ever again and the Jedi in Episode II are once again refusing to believe there's a Sith conspiracy, Maul in retrospect is really nothing but a cool henchman who serves a minor purpose in one film (and what purpose, exactly? He never does capture the Queen as he's assigned to do, and his duel with Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan is totally inconsequential) who's solely intended to sell as many toys as possible.

I'm only half joking about those images. An argument really can be made that the Sail Barge gunner and Grizz Frix are more important to the Star Wars story than Darth Maul.
