Bear in mind a ship like 200m long (like one of the smallest and first warships the Culture build). Among it's many treats are being able to tear open the fabric of reality to allow a section of a smaller (think big bang moment) universe to come out selectively where it wants and "pop" no more. In theory (if they were so destructive) even a non-military culture vessel could waste a whole system in seconds.
Machine intelligence evolves exponentially and at an increasing rate, hence Minds where they have to keep most of their processing substrate in hyperspace.
