Zarcaine Kuriyoshi: Paranoid Sociopath?

Imperial Center — Zarcaine Kuriyoshi, the controversial Senator of the Cronese Mandate currently on leave for "personal reasons," is reported to have behaved unusually in a recent meeting at his home with Moff Rainier Brandt and entered into catatonic stupors throughout, according to an individual familiar with the meeting who described the Senator's behavior as "sociopathic."

In the presence of his wife and his uncle, Moff Verilia of the Cadavine Sector, the Senator is reported to have rudely rebuffed, without explanation, greetings and gifts from Rainier Brandt, the Moff of the Imperial Center who is known to greet Senators and their families in this manner. Senator Kuriyoshi also expressed his "intense distrust" of a duo of the Moff's stormtroopers standing beside the Moff's shuttle outside and some distance away, and in response is reported to have summoned additional guards from the Cronese embassy. "He behaved like a paranoid and guilty man," said the individual familiar with the meeting, "Guilty of something."

Bizarrely, the Senator is also reported to have entered repeatedly into catatonic states in which he did and said nothing and showed no sign of perceiving external stimuli. It's possible that the Senator was on some form of drugs, according to the anonymous individual. "It would explain a lot," the individual told INN. He speculated that another individual present at the meeting—a Zabrak male who never identified himself—might have been a drug dealer. Strangely, INN found no information on the Zabrak's background, unusual for someone consorting with an Imperial Senator.

If indeed drugs were involved, it would appear that Senator Kuriyoshi's uncle, Moff Verilia of the Cadavine Sector, could also be involved. His presence at his nephew's home during the meeting was "unexpected and never explained," said the individual familiar with the meeting, and Verilia too entered into catatonic states in which he appeared "spaced out." Verilia, the son of a crime family who is currently under investigation by the Senate Ethics Committee for shady business practices (paying known pirates to work for his company, for instance), has told the Committee under oath that he did not recall meeting with his nephew recently—despite this meeting having taken place only weeks before.

His nephew, Senator Kuriyoshi, was recently censured by the Senate for remarks disparaging the Empire and its motives, remarks for which he apologized but later repeated. In the recent debates over capital ships legislation, the Senator made wild accusations of plagiarism only to promptly announce a leave of absence for "personal reasons." This impulsive episode is typical of Senator Kuriyoshi's tenure in the Senate, which has been characterized less by earnest advocacy for the people of the Cronese Mandate than by, rather, personal vendettas and self-serving proposals. For example, he recently proposed a bill that would exempt his uncle, Moff Verilia, from Imperial law, only to withdraw the bill when criticized by other Senators.

The individual familiar with the meeting at Senator Kuriyoshi's home told INN that this, too, could be explained by drugs. "The sociopathic behavior, the paranoia, the intense distrust of the Empire and its stormtroopers—it makes sense if you're doing drugs on the side." Moff Brandt told INN that his meeting with the Senator did take place, but would not comment on what he referred to as "these strange and unfortunate events" except to say that he was "concerned for the well-being of the Senator and his family."
