Manhunt Ends in Capture of Kenas Annig

Coruscant — Kenas Annig, the fugitive Jedi Knight who has been at large on Coruscant for at least a month, has been captured, according to Imperial officials who announced that Annig was apprehended while he and an accomplice were attempting to escape the planet. The Jedi Knight's capture is the culmination of a month of increased security measures and customs inspections on the galactic capital and has been praised as "a triumph of Imperial forces and naturally the Coruscant Security Force, which has proved itself to be as intrepid as ever," according to Moff Brandt of the Imperial Sector, which includes Coruscant.

Kenas Annig came to the attention of Imperial forces when he was involved in a skirmish with stormtroopers in a Coruscant street market last month, during which the Jedi Knight appeared to be responsible for the deaths of several. The Coruscant Journal cannot verify the Empire's version of events, as it has withheld witness testimony from independent media "pending the outcome of the case."

As a result of the altercation, Imperial authorities added the murder of stormtroopers to the charges against Mr. Annig—which include treason and pederasty—and vowed to capture him. During the month-long security crackdown on Coruscant during which the Senate, for instance, was put on high alert, Mr. Annig appeared to have cultivated a working relationship with a female Kiffar mercenary operating under the suspected alias of Fahri Vel, and attempted to flee the planet aboard her ship when Imperial forces moved in and disabled the vessel.

Mr. Annig was taken into custody, and Imperial authorities have reported Ms. Vel "presumed dead" after a firefight, though her body has not been recovered. There was no sign of an individual in Republic era "clone commando" armor who was sighted with Mr. Annig during the street market altercation last month, though it's possible that this too was Ms. Vel.

The Coruscant Security Force (CSF) was deeply involved in the manhunt and "deserves much of the credit," Moff Brandt told The Coruscant Journal. Brandt has supported the decisions of Moff Kadir, who controls the CSF, to fire many of its detectives in recent years and cut the salaries of those who remain, along with the CSF's budget in favor of a new division of the CSF called the "Coruscant Guard," comprised of crimson clad stormtroopers. While the Coruscant Guard did participate in the raid that captured Mr. Annig, Detective Tuesti of the CSF attributed the success of the manhunt to "good old fashioned police work," he said in brief remarks to The Coruscant Journal.

Tuesti was in charge of the manhunt, though he is reputed to have worked with a representative of the Emperor on the case. Neither the CSF nor the Imperial Palace would comment on the extent of Emperor Palpatine's interest in the hunt for Mr. Annig, but sources tell The Coruscant Journal that it wouldn't be unusual considering that more than one Jedi fugitive has been captured on Coruscant this year alone, and the number of those who remain at large is not clear.

Imperial authorities, meanwhile, would not comment on Mr. Annig's fate now that he has been captured. The Coruscant-based advocacy group "Justice for Jedi," which has had its office raided by Imperial stormtroopers on several occasions, has criticized the Empire for the manner in which accused Jedi have "disappeared" into its custody, and called for more transparency in the trials and sentencing of captured Jedi. Whether or not this will be the case with Mr. Annig remains to be seen.
