Memorials Held as Clone War Anniversary Nears

Coruscant — Worlds across the galaxy are marking the anniversaries of Clone Wars battles that occurred there ahead of the 10-year anniversary of the end of the war and the establishment of the Galactic Empire. From Mygeeto on the Outer Rim to Cato Neimoidia in the Colonies—and next month, Coruscant itself—worlds are remembering the loss of life in the three-year war between the Republic (later, the Empire) and the Separatists.

Cato Neimoidia and the former Neimoidian "purse worlds" had solemn ceremonies today marking the end, a decade ago, of the months-long battle of Cato Neimoidia, in which thousands of Neimoidians of the former "Neimoidian Home Defense Legions," enlisted in the Separatist cause, died. Red and white Imperial flags were a common sight at these ceremonies, which also observed the deaths of the Republic's clone troopers.

Neimoidia and its former "purse worlds" were subjugated in the aftermath of the Clone Wars, and stormtroopers were on hand during today's ceremonies to be sure they did not become un-Imperial or unruly.

The Clone Wars, in which the Separatists of the so called Confederacy of Independent Systems attempted to secede from the Republic, pitting droid armies against the Republic's clone troops, resulted in trillions of deaths across the galaxy and the destruction of entire worlds, such as Caamas, and—along with an apparent coup attempt by the Jedi—precipitated then-Supreme Chancellor Palpatine's "New Order" reforms of the Republic into the Empire ten years ago next month.

The occasion will be celebrated on Coruscant with parades and speeches on the grounds of the Imperial Palace and the Imperial Senate. Millions are expected to attend, among them Emperor Palpatine himself and Imperial dignitaries from throughout the galaxy, as well as veterans of the Clone Wars. The events will also commemorate the Battles of Coruscant and Utapau, crucial turning points in the final days of the war.

The lights on the former Jedi Temple building will also be darkened on the night of the commemorations, to symbolize a galaxy without the Jedi.

Crews on Coruscant have been working overtime ahead of the anniversary to clear some of the rubble that still remains from the battle here almost ten years ago, and temporary housing is being constructed on the moons of Coruscant to accommodate the tens of thousands of expected visitors to the planet.

But there are many worlds that won't be celebrating. The Outer Rim planet of Honoghr, home of the Noghri species, continues to cope with the destruction of its ecosystem in the Clone Wars, when a Separatist warship and biological weapons laboratory was shot down and crashed on the planet, releasing toxins that have rendered it a desolate wasteland and endangered the Noghri species.

Honoghr is one of many worlds still recovering from the Clone Wars, much as the galaxy continues to recover. Next month's commemorations, which also mark the start of the new year, will be an act of rememberance and of healing for many throughout the galaxy.
