Nefari is identifiable as a Nightsister (or, as the case may be, Nightsister in exile) by the markings on her boots and attire, though few are learned of such matters. She openly wears a lightsaber without apparent fear of the ramifications, causing some to believe she's under the employ of the Empire, while others assume she simply doesn't allow herself to be governed by those who would outlaw her methods.
The details of Nefari's exile are unknown to any but herself and the others involved. Though allowed to return to Dathomir under her own volition, she will be killed on sight by any of the Dathomiri Witch clans or Nightsisters should they see fit.
