Background:

K'so Da'shune was born a noble of Galinore, the Hapan planet known for it's rainbow gems and high-tech labs. Though born to wealth and power, Da'shune entered into military service, unable to stand the subservient role that males played in the female-dominated Hapan society. Working along the fringes of Hapan space, Da'shune picked up a number of skills over the years, including a decent mastery of the Teras Kasi martial art. However, his status as the primary male heir who was skimping on his royal duties, as well as his love affair with a beautiful but low-born researcher brought him to the shame of his family, who used their connections to deny him promotions at every chance they could. Nonetheless, perseverance and an undying will pushed him onwards, and he eventually held command of a small fleet of ships aboard the Hapan border, repelling smugglers and raiders with a ruthless efficiency that worried some of the older and wiser rulers of Gallinore.

To the eyes of those on Gallinore and on other worlds in the Hapan cluster, Da'shune was an exemplary warrior and a credit to the race, if flighty and unpredictable at times. In reality, Da'shune was spending time and years culling out those who believed deeply in the Hapan way of living, male and female alike, amongst his fleet and replacing them with idealists and those who wanted more beyond the isolated boundaries of Hapan culture. Years passed. It was during this time that Da'shune used some of his connections, both from his former lover and with his younger sister who'd always had a fondness for him and happened to be in charge of mining operations, to begin smuggle rainbow gems to him, one at a time, over a period of months and then further years.

A small portion of Da'shune's wealth was invested into his personal fighter, the Elysium, which would rival Prince Isolder's Storm many years in the future, as well as the March of Destiny, his flagship. At long last though, more than secure with the majority of those under his command being males who shared his ideals, males who were not 'perfect' as Hapan society deemed worthy and females with a sense of adventure, Da'shune bid farewell to the Hapes Cluster in a most spectacular defection that left the Hapes Council outraged and shamed at the actions of the young noble. Unfortunately for Da'shune, word of his flight reached the Consortium's ears, and they assaulted his staging area before he could complete his jump. Several hundred Hapan vessels descended upon his forces and Da'shune was forced to flee with but a bare fraction of what he'd amassed. When the dust settled and the destination of Parein II was reached, they were a sorry force indeed, cut down from over a hundred ships to a mere eight, though largely with crews and fighter compliments intact.

It was from Parein II that Da'shune expanded, rapidly assimilating the quartet of moons around the planet and working to calm the local populace that the Hapans had come in peace. The sudden surprise and the lack of inhabitants on Parein II made it easy for Da'shune to buy out two small mining companies and a rather small independent shipyard that produced off-brand snubfighters and freighters. It was here that Da'shune founded the Independent Hapan Nation and was elected as Presidium. While his intent was to remain aloof for a time, his contacts still hidden in the Consortium; largely his sister and former lover, who'd publicly denounced him, informed him that the Consortium, in an effort to save face, had decided not to pursue him directly and instead offered a planet's ransom as a bounty on his head. With little choice left to him, Da'shune felt he would be forced to join the Imperial Senate, if only to gain some ratification and allies. The plan to remain apart from the Galactic Empire, however, was still foremost in his mind.
